The cross-section for e + e − → hadrons in the vicinity of the Z boson peak has been measured with the ALEPH detector at the CERN Large Electron Positron collider, LEP. Measurements of the Z mass, M z = (91.174±0.070) GeV, the Z width Γ z =(2.68±0.15) GeV, and of the peak hadronic cross-section, σ had peak =(29.3±1.2) nb, are presented. With the constraints of the standard electroweak model, the number of light neutrino species is found to be N v =3.27±0.30. this results rules out of the possibility of a fourth type of light neutrino at 98% CL.

Using the CUSB-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured Bμμ, the branching fraction into muons, of the Υ’’ meson. We find Bμμ(Υ’’)=(1.53±0.33±0.21)%, from which the Υ’’ total decay width is 25.5±5.0 keV. From this result we obtain αs=0.170−0.012+0.015, ΛMS¯=148−39+56 MeV. (MS¯ denotes the modified minimal-subtraction scheme).

The masses, total widths, and leptonic widths of three triplet s-wave bb¯ states ϒ(4S), ϒ(5S), and ϒ(6S) are determined from measurements of the e+e− annihilation cross section into hadrons for 10.55<W<11.25 GeV. The resonances are identified from potential model results and their properties are obtained with the help of a simplified coupled-channels calculation. We find M(4S)=10.577 GeV, Γ(4S)=25 MeV, Γee(4S)=0.28 keV; M(5S)=10.845 GeV, Γ(5S)=110 MeV, Γee(5S)=0.37 keV; M(6S)=11.02 GeV, Γ(6S)=90 MeV, Γee(6S)=0.16 keV.
VISIBLE CROSS SECTION INTO HADRONS.
Measurements are presented of the inclusive charged-particle cross sections s dσdx for e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies of 5.2, 6.5, and 29.0 GeV. Significant scale breaking is observed in these cross sections.
CROSS SECTION S*D(SIG)/DX FOR CHARGED PARTICLES AT SQRT(S) = 5.2, 6.5 AND 29.0 GEV. NUMERICAL VALUES OF DATA TAKEN FROM THESIS OF J.F. PATRICK LBL-14585.
The production of the charmed meson state D*+ has been observed in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV. The fragmentation function for charmed quarks appears to be peaked about z=0.5.

UPDATED RESULT REPORTED AS PRELIMINARY IN G. TRILLING, PARIS CONFERENCE 1982.
Energy correlations have been measured with the MARK II detector at the PEP storage ring (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) at c.m. energy of 29 GeV and are compared to first-order QCD predictions. Fragmentation processes are significant and limit the precision with which the first-order strong-coupling constant can be determined.
CORRELATION IS THE ENERGY WEIGHTED CROSS SECTION FOR OBSERVING THE ENERGY E1 IN THE SOLID ANGLE DOMEGA1 AND THE ANGLE E2 IN THE SOLID ANGLE DOMEGA2.SUMMED OVER ALL PAIRS OF PARTICLES IN DOMEGA1 AND DOMEGA2 AND ALL EVENTS.
