The elastic scattering of K+ mesons on protons is studied at 3.5 and 5 GeV/c. The total elastic cross-sections are found to be (4.36±0.36) mb and (3.82±0.41) mb respectively. The differential elastic cross-sections, which exhibit characteristic diffraction peaks, are fitted by dσ/dt=(dσ/dt)0eαt, giving α=(3.85±0.12) and (4.70±0.21) (GeV/c)−2 for the two momenta respectively, with |t|⪝0.65 (GeV/c)2. The results are compared to those at neighbouring energies, giving some support to the presence of a real part of the forward scattering amplitude. The diffraction peak shows definite shrinking with increasing momenta. The data are examined in the light of models for high-energy scattering.

For the reaction γ+p→γ′+p′ (proton Compton effect), we have measured the ratio dσIIdσ⊥ between the cross sections for linearly polarized photons, using the coherent bremsstrahlung beam of the Frascati electron synchrotron. At 90° in the c.m. system and in the photon energy region 300≤K≤335 MeV, we find dσIIdσ⊥=2.1−0.4+0.5. In the absence of theoretical predictions based on the dispersive theory in this energy region, this result is compared with the values obtained using an isobaric model, taking into account various possible intermediate states.

The asymmetry A=(dσ⊥−dσ∥)(dσ⊥+dσ∥) of the differential cross section for the reaction γd→π−pp has been studied with linearly polarized photons of 3.0 GeV at squared four-momentum-transfers between 0.15 and 2.0 (GeV/c)2. The asymmetry was found to be positive at −t values below 0.3 (GeV/c)2, dipping to negative values between 0.4 and 0.6 (GeV/c)2, and then rising again to positive values above 0.7 (GeV/c)2.

The reaction γ⊥,∥p→π+n has been studied with linearly polarized photons of energy 3.0 GeV at −t values between 0.15 and 1.2 (GeVc)2. The asymmetry A+=(dσ⊥−dσ∥)(dσ⊥+dσ∥) is found to be positive throughout this four-momentum-transfer range, implying the dominance of natural parity exchange in the t channel. Comparison of dσ⊥(γ⊥p→π+n) and dσ⊥p→π−p) from a previous experiment indicates strong interference between the isoscalar and isovector photon amplitudes for photons polarized perpendicular to the production plane.

The asymmetry Σ(k,θ*)=(dσ⊥−dσ∥)(dσ⊥+σ∥) of the polarized cross sections for π0 photoproduction has been measured at θ*=90° for energies k of the incident photon in the range 230-380 MeV. The experiment has been performed with the polarized γ-ray beam of the Frascati 1-GeV electron synchrotron. The experimental results are compared with the present theoretical predictions in order to investigate the importance of ω exchange in the t channel and the contribution of the E1+(3) multipole at the 33 resonance. The theory with ω exchange is in the best agreement with the experiment.

Small angle elastic scattering events have been observed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Directions of both particles as well as the collision vertex are reconstructed with the help of four sets of spark chambers, two for each of the two arms. The elastic nature of the events is demonstrated by a collinearity requirement. We find values for the (diffraction) slope parameter in disagreement with the simple linear extrapolation of lower energy (Surpukov) data.

Results are presented on effective-mass distributions, differentisl cross sections and longitudinal c.m. momentum distributions for the channels K − p → K − p π o , K o p π − and K − π + n , obtained from a sample of approximately 28 000 inelastic two-pronged interactions at 4.2 GeV/ c incident momentum. The results are in satisfactory agreement with the prediction of a generalized Veneziano-model corrected for (non-dual) π -and pomeron exchange. For the channel K − pπ o pomeron exchange contributes about 20% of the cross section. In the channel K − π + n the dual, pion and pomeron contributions are responsible for resp. 15%, 65% and 20% of the total cross section.

A set of parameters describing the K + n elastic scattering has been obtained from a simulataneous fit, based on the Glauber model. to the three experimental differential cross sections and to the K + d total cross section, giving α n = 1.7 ± 0.5 GeV −2 for the slope α n of the differential cross section, and ρ n = −0.16 ± 0.3 for the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude. The spin rotation parameter R in elastic proton-proton scattering has been determined at incident momenta 6 and 16 GeV/ c in the interval from t = −0.18 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −0.54 (GeV/ c ) 2 . R pp at 16 GeV/ c is close to the val obtained for R in π − p elastic scattering at the same incident momentum. Equality of R pp ( s , t ) and R π p ( s , t ) is expected if Pomeron exchange dominates and if factorization holds. The t -dependence of R at 16 GeV/ c is consistent with weak helicity flip.

The corresponding differential cross sections agree within the rather large uncertainties. The forward amplitude for reaction (2) is predominantly real. Moreover, the total and forward differential charge exchange cross section values are compatible with those predicted on the basis of an SU (3) sum rule. A bubble-chamber study is presented of a 10 events/μb experiment using K − mesons of 4.25 GeV/ c incident momentum. Differential and total cross sections are determined for 7 different reactions: K − p → K 0 n ( la ), → π 0 Λ ( lb ), → ηΛ ( lc ), → η′Λ ( ld ), → π − Σ ( le ), → π + Σ − ( lf ), K + Ξ − ( lg ) . The experimental characteristics in d σ /d t of each reaction are described: (la) shows a levelling off at t = 0 (GeV/ c ) 2 , a break at t = −0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 and no backward events, (lb) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour and a measurable backward component with an indication of a dip at u = −0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (1c) d σ /d t shows a dip in the region between t ≈ −0.2 and −0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (ld) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour; neither this reaction nor the preceding one shows a clear evidence for backward events, (le) d σ /d t has a break at t = −0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 ; there is a significant cross section in the backward region; (lf) and (lg) show mainly backward production. The polarization of the hyperon is measured in the reactions (lb), (lc), (ld) and (le) in the forward production peak. The statistics do not allow the detection of a definite structure in the polarization but the sign and magnitude are determined. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of a dual Regge model, including the effects of absorption as elaborated recently by several authors.

BREIT-WIGNER RESONANCE FITS WITH BACKGROUND.
Results on the elastic K − π − scattering have been obtained from a study of the K − π − system in 15 000 events of the type K − p→K − π − p π + at a K − beam momentum of 4.25 GeV/ c . The on-mass-shell values of the spherical harmonic moments of the K − π − scattering angular distribution and the K − π − elastic cross section have been obtained by extrapolation to the pion pole. From these values we determined the s- and p-wave phase shifts δ 0 3 and δ 1 3 as a function of the effective mass of the K − π − system between threshold and 1.25 GeV/ c 2 . The value of | δ 0 3 | is smaller than 17° for all mass values and the existence of a p-wave cannot be neglected. At m K − π − = 1.18 GeV/ c 2 there are two solutions for the phase shifts. On the average, the cross section of the K − π − elastic scattering over the region of the effective mass considered amounts to approximately 2.5 mb.
The errors combine statistical and systematical effects.
The errors are statistical.

Using data for the reactions K$^\pm$d $\to$ K$^{*\pm}$(892)d in the incident momentum range 2–13 GeV/ c the parameters of the effective exchanged trajectory are estimated.

We present an analysis, in the framework of the triple Regge model, of our recent experimental results on the reaction p+p→p+X between 50 and 400 GeV.
The cross sections is fitted in the framework of the triple Regge model. The symbols P and R in the (C=...) denote pomeron and reggeon, respectively. For fit I and II the authors used conventional trajectories alpha(P) = 1 +0.25*T, alpha(R) = 0.5 + T. Fit II is restricted to data with (1 - M(P=4)**2/S) > 0.84. In fit III they use alpha(R) = 0.2 + T for the RRP term. Fit IV is like fit I with additional fixed (pion pion P) term.
The cross sections is fitted in the farmework of the triple Regge model. The symbols P and R in teh (C=...) denote pomeron and reggeon, respectively. CONST(C=C) and SLOPE are from the replacement of the RRP term by the exponential one : CONST(C=C)*(SLOPE*(1-x)). See text for detail.

The angular distribution of π + p elastic scattering has been measured at an incident momentum of 10 GeV/ c . Nearly the whole angular range was covered in one experimental set-up. The pronounced dip at − t = 2.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 , observed at lower momenta, has diminished and is essentially a shoulder at 10 GeV/ c . The other structure at larger momentum transfers are also different in detail from what we observed at 5 GeV/ c . In the 90° c.m. region the differential cross-section is approximately one nb/(GeV/ c ) 2 , which is more than two orders of magnitude lower than at 5 GeV/ c .

We have studied K+π− elastic scattering in the reaction K+p→K+π−Δ++ at 12 GeVc and in the Kπ mass interval 800 to 1000 MeV. We have performed a partial-wave analysis in this Kπ mass region, dominated by the p-wave resonance K*(890), in order to obtain information about the s-wave amplitude. We have extrapolated the K+π− moments, the total cross section, and p-wave cross section to the pion pole. The p-wave cross section is close to the unitarity limit and can be described by a Breit-Wigner resonance form, with parameters M=896±2 MeV and Γ=47±3 MeV. We then perform an energy-independent phase-shift analysis of the extrapolated moments and total cross section using this Breit-Wigner form for the p wave and a previously determined small negative phase shift for the I=32s wave. For the I=12s-wave phase shift we find the so called "down" solution, which has a phase shift that rises slowly from 20° at M(Kπ)=800 MeV to 60° at M(Kπ)=1000 MeV. The energy dependence of this phase shift is well described by an effective range form, with a scattering length a01=−0.33±0.05 F. The so-called "up" solution is eliminated or has large χ2 everywhere except for two overlapping mass intervals at M(Kπ)=890 and 900 MeV. However, due to limited statistics, we expect two solutions for the s wave very near the mass where the p wave is resonant. We then perform an energy-dependent partial-wave analysis and find again no evidence for an s-wave resonance although, due to limited statistics, we could not exclude one at 890 MeV with Γ<7 MeV.

We have done a JP analysis of the low-mass π+ω system, using the reaction π+p→π+ωp at 7.1 GeV/c. We find that the B resonance cannot be JP=0− and must belong to the unnatural-parity series (1+, 2−, 3+,...), regardless of the amount of interference between the B and the background. If we assume that the B does not interfere with the background, we find that all JP states for the resonance are rejected except for 1+. Even if interference effects are allowed in the analysis, a good fit with reasonable parameters is obtained only with the 1+ hypothesis for the B meson. In an appendix, we give relevant theoretical formulas appropriate for a πω system with any number of spin-parity states and arbitrary degrees of interference among them.
