Inclusive photoproduction of ϕ,K*0(890),\(\bar K*^0 \) andK*0(1420),\(\bar K*^0 \) has been studied in γp collisions with photons of energy 20 to 70 GeV and in the range 0.1≦xF≦0.95 [0.4≦xF≦0.8 for the\(\mathop K\limits^{( - )} *\)(1420)],xF being the Feynman variable of the vector/tensor meson. The cross-sections for these processes, averaged over the photon energy range and integrated overxF are given. The inclusive ϕ production in the forward direction can be described quantitatively by a triple-Regge model calculation. The remaining ϕ production and the totalK*0(890) and\(\bar K*^0 \) production are consistent with a quark fusion picture.

Nucleon structure functions obtained from neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on iron nuclei at high energies (Ev=30 to 250 GeV) are presented. These results are compared with the results of other lepton-nucleon scattering experiments. The structure functions are used to test the validity of the Gross-Llewellyn-smith sum rule, which measures the number of valence quarks in the nucleons, and to obtain leading and second order QCD fits.

Inclusive distributions are presented for final-state π0 and η0 mesons produced in γp interactions. For photon energies from 50 to 130 GeV, both cross sections scale for fractional momenta xF>~0.30. The average transverse momentum for both mesons is approximately constant with energy and equal to 0.51±0.05 GeV/c at large xF. The η0π0 ratio similarly rises from 0.07±0.03 at xF=0.38 to 0.30±0.09 at xF=0.90. The π0 distributions are in good agreement with those seen in the scattering of highly virtual incident photons.

The ν¯μ charged-current total cross section has been measured with the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber plus the external muon identifier and internal "picket fence." Beam monitoring information used for the flux calculation was obtained from Blair et al., whose detector operated in the same dichromatic beam. The present result, averaged over ν¯μ energies from 5 to 250 GeV, is σE=(0.340±0.019±0.022)×10−38 cm2/(GeV nucleon) for an isoscalar target.

We present the results of a study of the inclusive reaction ν¯p→μ+X0 for antineutrino energies from 5 to 150 GeV. The data were obtained by exposing the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory hydrogen-filled 15-foot bubble chamber to a wide-band antineutrino beam. This is the first high-energy antineutrino experiment in which a pure proton target was used. The experimental problems of selecting the required sample of charged-current antineutrino-induced events are discussed in detail. A Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment is used to provide correction factors to the measured distributions. A measurement of the x dependence of the inelasticity (y) distributions gives the proton structure functions F2ν¯p(x) and xF3ν¯p(x) up to an overall normalization constant. When expressed in terms of the quark-parton model, the quark distributions u(x) and d¯(x)+s¯(x) are determined. The results for u(x) are found to be in excellent agreement with models based on fits to electron and muon scattering data. Using these results to fix the u(x) normalization, an absolute measurement is made of x[d¯(x)+s¯(x)], the antiquark momentum distribution.

Measurements of inclusive scattering in the target-fragmentation region are extended to higher incident energy. The combined data set shows departures from an approach to the asymptotic scaling limit as A+Bs−12 that are significant even at the highest energies. When these departures are taken into account, the data approach a limit that is consistent with equal cross sections induced by particles and antiparticles and with Pomeron factorization. The corrections to A+Bs−12 are so large that detailed tests of Mueller-Regge relationships are not conclusive.

Results are presented on the inclusive photoproduction of λ and λ for incident photon energies between 25 and 70 GeV. The slope parameter of the p T 2 distribution is found to be 2.83±0.1 GeV −2 for λ and 3.28±0.25 GeV −2 for λ . The x F distributions, measured in the range −0.2 to 0.7, show that while λ are produced centrally, λ production extends to more negative values of x F ; the shapes show no energy dependence and are similar to those in pion-induced reactions. The polarization of the produced λ is less than 10%. The results are discussed in terms of vector dominance and quark fusion models.

Inclusive charged-current interactions of high-energy neutrinos and antineutrinos have been studied with high statistics in a counter experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The energy dependence of the total cross-sections, the longitudinal structure function, and the nucleon structure functionsF2,xF3, and\(\bar q^{\bar v} \) are determined from these data. The analysis of theQ2-dependence of the structure functions is used to test quantum chromodynamics, to determine the scale parameter Λ and the gluon distribution in the nucleon.

The reaction π−p→ωn in the beam-momentum range from 20 to 200 GeV/c has been studied using data acquired at Fermilab. In this Letter, the integral and differential cross sections for this reaction are presented. The integral cross sections are considerably larger than those previously reported. The differential cross sections can be reproduced quite easily by Regge models. As predicted by such models, natural-parity exchange dominates production throughout this energy region.

We report on a study of pion charge-exchange scattering carried out at Fermilab in the energy range 20 to 200 GeV. The results can be described remarkably well by a simple Regge-pole model. The charge-exchange cross sections in the forward direction lead to a prediction for the difference in total cross sections of π−p and π+p which is in satisfactory agreement with direct measurements of this difference in another experiment at Fermilab.

We have measured total cross sections for neutrons on protons, deuteriom, beryllium, carbon, aluminium, iron, copper, cadmium, tungsten, lead, and uranium for momenta between 30 and 300 GeV/ c . The measurements were carried out in a small-angle neutral beam at Fermilab. Typical accuracy of the data is 0.5 to 1%. The cross sections are consistent with an A 0.77±0.01 dependence over the entire momentum range. The cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions. The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

The average charged multiplicity in proton-proton interactions has been studied at √ s = 62 GeV. A very good agreement with the average charged multiplicity measured in e + e − annihilation at different energies is obtained by redefining, in p-p, the correct energies available for particle production. This means that a p-p collision at √ s = 62 GeV does in fact correspond to a large range of effective hadronic energies available for particle production.

Measurements of the charged multiplicities for hadron production in e + e − annihilation in the center of mass energy range 9–32 GeV have been made. The average charged multiplicity has an energy dependence much stronger than ln s and similar to that reported for pp collisions. Quantitative differences are observed in the magnitude of both the average multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉 and the dispersion D ch for e + e − and pp interactions at the same center of mass energy. 〈 n ch 〉 and the ratio 〈 n ch / D ch in e + e − annihilations are significantly larger than in pp collisions and are found to be in overall agreement with QCD predictions.
