We have performed in the NA3 experiment the study of high mass dimuon production by a hadronic unseparated beam on hydrogen and platinum targets. The comparison of the production cross‐section for proton and antiproton together with the differential cross‐section dσ/dx allows us to compare the data with a production mechanism involving quark‐antiquark and gluon‐gluon interactions. The cosΘ* distribution of the same J/ψ data have also been analysed and results will be presented. Finally we have observed T production from 150 GeV/c incident pions.

The reactionpp→pf(K+K-π+π-)ps, where theK+K− π+π- system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/c. TheK*0\(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state has been observed and the cross sections for its central production are found to be the same at 300 and 85 GeV/c. TheK*0\(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state appears to be produced as a non-resonant threshold enhancement.

Results are presented of an analysis of the reaction pp→p f (K S 0 K ± π ∓ )p s at 300 GeV/ c . Clear f 1 (1285) and f 1 (1420) signals are seen. A spin-parity analysis shows that both are consistent with being 1 ++ states. The f 1 (1420) is found to decay only to K ∗ K and no 0 −+ or 1 +− waves are required to describe the data. The production of the f 1 (1285) as a function of energy is not the same as that for the f 1 (1420) whose cross section is found to be constant with energy.

The reaction pp→p f ( π + π − π + π − )p s , where the π + π − π + π − system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/ c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. The π + π − π + π − mass spectrum shows evidence for the f 1 (1285) with a mass of 1281±1 MeV and a width of 31±5 MeV. In addition there is evidence for two new enhancements at masses of 1449±4 and 1901±13 MeV with widths of 78±18 and 312±61 MeV respectively. An analysis of the state at 1.45 GeV indicates that it is not a π + π − π + π − decay mode of the f 1 (1420) or ι η(1440) .

The single-particle inclusive pion spectrum from the reaction p + p → π ± + anything at 28.5 GeV is presented in both tabular and graphical form. The data are from exposures in the BNL 203 cm bubble chamber. The emphasis of this paper is on exhibiting the single-particle spectra in sufficient detail so that the data will be useful to those interested in testing models and developing new concepts.

Inclusive π− distributions from 205-GeV/c pp interactions, covering the full range of longitudinal and transverse momenta, have been obtained using the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at the National Accelerator Laboratory. These data provide new evidence for scaling in the fragmentation region and for a plateau in the central region of rapidity. The 90°-c.m. invariant cross section varies as exp[−(10±2)PT2] in the range PT2<~0.1 (GeV/c)2.

The polarization of the recoil proton has been measured in both high-energy elastic and inclusive proton-proton scattering at the internal-target area of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The polarization in elastic scattering was measured at a number of center-of-mass energies up to s=19.7 GeV. Indications of negative polarization were seen at the higher center-of-mass energies for t values of -0.6, -0.8, and -1.0 (GeV/c)2. In the inclusive process p+p→p↑+X the polarization was found to be independent of beam energy from 100 to 400 GeV for xF values of -0.7, -0.8, -0.9. The polarization at PT=1.0 GeV/c, xF=−0.7 and xF=−0.8 was less than 2.5%. This is significantly lower than the corresponding measurements reported for Λ0 inclusive polarization.

A detailed study ofJ/ψ hadronic production has been performed in a high statistics experiment (more than 1.5 106J/ψ observed in their dimuon decay mode). Data have been taken with incident π±,K±,p±, on hydrogen and platinum targets, at 150, 200 and 280 GeV/c. We find from the observed nuclear dependance of the cross sections, that about 18% of theJ/ψ are produced diffractively. Using known structure functions of the quarks in the nucleon and in the pion, we derive estimations for the gluon structure functions.
