Coherent photoproduction of ϱ 0 and ω at E γ = 4.3 GeV is observed. The ratios ϱ 0 d/ ω d and ϱ 0 d/ ϱ 0 p are discussed and compared with theoretical predictions. By comparing our data with total photoabsorption cross sections we determine the direct vector meson-photon coupling to be γ ϱ 2 /4 π = 0.29 ± 0.06. With this value we find the VDM relations between photoproduction and Compton scattering well satisfied.

THE study of elastic scattering at high energies in the region of the diffraction maximum has gained in interest recently in connection with the verifica- tion of the asymptotic expressions obtained by cal- culating the Regge-pole trajectories. We have in- vestigated the elastic scattering of 3. 5- Be VIc 7r- mesons by protons. The measurements were made with the aid of a liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber 25 em in diameter, placed in a 14 kOe magnetic field.

On the construction of pion photoproduction amplitudes from experimental data

New formulae for constructing the pion photoproduction amplitude J from experimental data are presented. The phase of J is expressed in terms of its zeroes in the energy plane, the particle poles and a dispersion integral over the modulus of J , the latter being given, except for a finite unphysical interval, in terms of differential cross sections and recoil nucleon polarizations. For γ p→ π + n at t ≈−0.870 μ 2 , where the unphysical-region contribution vanishes, the zeroes are found approximately, so that the phase of J can be uniquely determined from the experimental data.

Elastic Photoproduction of omega Mesons from Hydrogen, Deuterium, and Complex Nuclei

We have studied ω photoproduction using 7.5- to 10.5-GeV tagged photons. Cross sections from hydrogen lie 22% below the bubble chamber results of Ballam et al., but have a similar slope. Density matrices indicate approximate s-channel helicity conservation. The proton-neutron cross-section difference is midway between zero and the value suggested by the γp−γn total-cross-section difference. Fits to the cross sections for D, Be, and Cu and those for Be, C, Al, Cu, and Pb from a previous experiment yield σωN=25.4±2.7 mb and γω24π=7.6±1.2.
