The small-angle elastic scattering for pp at s=23.5, 30.7, and 52.8 GeV and for p¯p at s=52.8 GeV are measured. The data are normalized on Coulomb scattering. Using the optical theorem and the best estimate of the real part of the forward scattering amplitude, ρ(pp¯)=0.1, we obtain σtot(p¯p)=44.1±2.9 mb for the total cross section and b(p¯p)=13.6±2.2 GeV−2 for the nuclear slope parameter. This supports the dispersion relation prediction that σtot(p¯p) will start to rise above Elab≈200 GeV.

Measurements of charged particle multiplicity distributions in the central rapidity region in p-p and p-α, and α-α collisions are reported. They are better fitted to the “wounded nucleon” than to the “gluon string” model. The average transverse momenta, for all three reactions, are identical (and almost independent of multiplicity) up to very high multiplicities.
THE FIRST PP DATA IS AT 44 GEV, THE SECOND AT 63 GEV.

Data are presented on the reaction pp → pX in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.04< − t <0.80 GeV 2 and of c.m. energy squared 550 < s < 3880 GeV 2 . Invariant cross sections are given as a function of M 2 / s , where M is the mass of the missing system X, and of t . The cross sections are shown to scale in the variable M 2 / s , for M 2 / s > 0.01. The total diffractive cross section integrated over t and M 2 / s up to M 2 / s =0.05 rises by approximately 15% from σ dif =6.5±0.2 mb at 550 GeV 2 to σ dif =7.5±0.3 mb at 3880 GeV 2 .

Measurements of the total cross section have been performed at the ISR with c.m. energies between 23.5 GeV and 62.5 GeV. Two independent experimental methods have been applied, a measurement of total interaction rate and of small angle elastic scattering. Both experiments give consistent results showing that the total cross section increases by (11.8±1.5) % over the ISR energy range. This experiment has also measured the slope of the forward diffraction peak in elastic scattering at small momentum transfer. The elastic cross section shows the same relative rise as the total cross section, and the ratio λ of elastic to total cross section approaches a constant value of λ =0.178±0.003.

The measurement of the proton-proton total cross section performed by the CERN-Pisa-Rome-Stony Brook Collaboration at the CERN ISR is discussed in detail. The total interaction rate, the elastic scattering rate in the forward direction, and the machine luminosity were measured simultaneously to obtain three different determinations of the total cross section. Consistent results were found, which made it possible to prove the reliability of the Van der Meer luminosity calibration within +-0.9% and to achieve a precision of +-0.6% in the measurement of the total cross section.

Antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering was measured for centre-of-mass energies s =30.6, 52.8 and 62.3 GeV at the CERN Intersectung Storage Rings. In addition, proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at s =23.5 GeV . Using the optical theorem, total cross sections are obtained with an accuracy of about 0.5% for proton-proton scattering and about 1% for antiproton-proton scattering. The measurement of the interference of the Coulomb scattering and the hadronic scattering permits a determination of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward hadronic scattering amplitude. Also presented are measurements of the hadronic slope parameter.

A detailed account is given of high-precision measurements of the total hadronic cross sections of proton-antiproton and proton-proton interactions at centre-of-mass energies of 30.6, 52.8 and 62.7 GeV. The experiment was performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) using the total interaction-rate method, in which additive correction terms for trigger losses were held to less than 6% of the final result. An experimental determination of the vertical beam-displacement scale permitted luminosity-monitor calibrations to be made with high intrinsic accuracy. The overall precision (systematic and statistical errors combined) achieved in the total cross sections was ± 1.1% for proton-antiproton reactions and 0.7% for proton-proton reactions. In the proton-proton case the measurement was the most precise such measurement made at the ISR.

The total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been measured for CM energies ranging from 50 to 57 GeV. We fit the predictions of the standard model to these measurements and those at lower energies. The mass of the Z 0 boson, M Z , and the QCD scale parameter, Λ MS , are derived from the fit. The results are M Z =88.6 −1.8 +2.0 GeV/ c 2 , and Λ MS =0.15 −0.11 +0.16 GeV .

We have studied inclusive lepton production in e + e − annihilations into multihadrons in the energy range between √ s =50 and 55 GeV using the VENUS detector at TRISTAN, KEK. Though MARK-J and JADE groups at PETRA found an excess of isolated muon events at √ s ⩾46.3 GeV, we have not observed such an anomaly in muon nor in electron production. The observed rates of isolated leptons are consistent with the production and decay of five known quarks.

We present data on proton-proton collisions, obtained at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, in which two roughly back-to-back π 0 's of high transverse momentum ( p T ) were produced. The angular distribution of the dipion axis relative to the collision axis is found to be independent of both the effective mass m of the dipion system and the centre-of-mass energy √ s of the proton-proton collision. The cross-sections d σ d m at the values of √ s satisfy a scaling law of the form d σ d m = G(x) m n , where x = m(π 0 , π 0 )//trs and n = 6.5 ± 0.5 . We show from our data that the leading π 0 carries most of the momentum of the scattered parton. Given this fact, the axis of the dipion system follows closely the direction of the scattered constituents, and we exploit this to determine the angular dependence of the hard-scattering subprocess. We also compare our data with the lowest order QCD predictions using structure functions as determined in deep-inelastic scattering and fragmentation functions from electron-positron annihilation.

Antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering have been measured for centre-of-mass energies √ s = 30.7 and 62.5 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Antiproton-proton and proton-proton total cross sections are obtained using the optical theorem. The measurement of the Coulomb scattering and its interference with the nuclear scattering allows a determination of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude. Also presented are measurements for the nuclear slope parameter at √ s = 62.5 GeV. Our new results reinforce the conclusions drawn recently from our measurements at √ s = 52.8 GeV. In particular, the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and should continue to rise well beyond these energies.

We present results obtained from a study of the structure of hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at various centre-of-mass energies. The distributions of event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are measured from 30GeV to 189GeV and compared with various QCD models. The energy dependence of the moments of event shape variables is used to test a power law ansatz for the non-perturbative component. We obtain a universal value of the non-perturbative parameter alpha_0 = 0.537 +/- 0.073. From a comparison with resummed O(alpha_s^2) QCD calculations, we determine the strong coupling constant at each of the selected energies. The measurements demonstrate the running of alpha_s as expected in QCD with a value of alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1215 +/- 0.0012 (exp) +/- 0.0061 (th).

The ratio R of the total cross section for e+e− annihilation into hadrons to the lowest-order QED cross section for e+e−→μ+μ− has been measured for center-of-mass energies ranging from 50 to 61.4 GeV. This paper presents the first measurement of the inclusive J/Psi production cross section in the forward pseudorapidity region 2.5<|eta|<3.7 in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8TeV. We search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a massive vector boson in 91±7pb−1 of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume the Higgs scalar H0 decays to a bb¯ pair with branching ratio β, and we consider the hadronic decays of the vector boson V ( W or Z). Observations are consistent with background expectations. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on σ(pp¯→H0V)β as a function of the scalar mass (MH0) over the range 70<MH0<140GeV/c2. When combined with an analysis of the case where V is a leptonically decaying W, these limits vary from 23 pb at MH0=70GeV/c2 to 17 pb at MH0=140GeV/c2.

Measurements of the cross section ratio for jet transverse energy thresholds (ETmin) ranging from 15 to 95 GeV are compared to theoretical predictions using next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. This Letter describes a measurement of the muon cross section originating from b quark decay in the forward rapidity range 2.4 < y(mu) < 3.2 in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. We present measurements of the b-bbar production cross section and angular correlations using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p-pbar Collider operating at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The b quark production cross section for |y(b)|<1.0 and p_T(b)>6 GeV/c is extracted from single muon and dimuon data samples. The results agree in shape with the next-to-leading order QCD calculation of heavy flavor production but are greater than the central values of these predictions. The angular correlations between b and bbar quarks, measured from the azimuthal opening angle between their decay muons, also agree in shape with the next-to-leading order QCD prediction.

We present results of searches for diphoton resonances produced both inclusively and also in association with a vector boson (W or Z) using 100 $pb^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions using the CDF detector. We set upper limits on the product of cross section times branching ratio for both $p\bar{p} \to \gamma \gamma + X$ and $p \bar{p} \to \gamma \gamma + W/Z$. Comparing the inclusive production to the expectations from heavy sgoldstinos we derive limits on the supersymmetry-breaking scale $\sqrt{F}$ in the TeV range, depending on the sgoldstino mass and the choice of other parameters. Also, using a NLO prediction for the associated production of a Higgs boson with a W or Z boson, we set an upper limit on the branching ratio for $H \to \gamma \gamma$. Finally, we set a lower limit on the mass of a 'bosophilic' Higgs boson (e.g. one which couples only to $\gamma, W,$ and $Z$ bosons with standard model couplings) of 82 GeV/$c^2$ at 95% confidence level.

We describe a search for the pair production of first-generation scalar and vector leptoquarks in the eejj and enujj channels by the D0 Collaboration. The data are from the 1992--1996 ppbar run at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We find no evidence for leptoquark production; in addition, no kinematically interesting events are observed using relaxed selection criteria. The results from the eejj and enujj channels are combined with those from a previous D0 analysis of the nunujj channel to obtain 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the leptoquark pair-production cross section as a function of mass and of beta, the branching fraction to a charged lepton. These limits are compared to next-to-leading-order theory to set 95% C.L. lower limits on the mass of a first-generation scalar leptoquark of 225, 204, and 79 GeV/c^2 for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively. For vector leptoquarks with gauge (Yang-Mills) couplings, 95% C.L. lower limits of 345, 337, and 206 GeV/c^2 are set on the mass for beta=1, 1/2, and 0, respectively. Bottom quark production in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV is studied with 5 inverse picobarns of data collected in 1995 by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We present the results of a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with $b$ quarks in $p\bar{p}\to b\bar{b} \phi\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ final states with $91 \pm 7$ pb$^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Exclusive electroproduction of rho^0 mesons has been measured using the ZEUS detector at HERA in two Q^2 ranges, 0.25<Q^2<0.85 GeV^2 and 3<Q^2<30 GeV^2. The low-Q^2 data span the range 20<W<90 GeV; the high-Q^2 data cover the 40<W<120 GeV interval. Both samples extend up to four-momentum transfers of |t|=0.6 GeV^2. The distribution in the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and the rho^0 production plane shows a small but significant violation of s-channel helicity conservation, corresponding to the production of longitudinally polarised (i.e. helicity zero) rho^0 mesons from transverse photons. Measurements of the 15 combinations of spin-density matrix elements which completely define the angular distributions are presented and discussed.

Measurements of the cross section for the production of electron pairs with invariant masses between 4 and 8.7 GeV are presented as a function of the centre-of-mass energy ( s = 28 to s = 62 GeV ) of the colliding proton beams. A significant excess of events is observed in the region 8.7 to 10.3 GeV; these are ascribed to the ϒ(9.5 GeV) resonances and estimates of the production cross sections are given.
Axis error includes +- 40/40 contribution (Due to the uncertainty in efficiency).

We have measured the charge-exchange reaction pp → (p π + ) (p π − ) at s = 23, 31, 45, 53, and 63 GeV at the ISR, using the Split Field Magnet detector. The data are characterized by a sharp forward peak of width 0.02 (GeV/ c ) 2 , followed by a much gentler slope at higher | t |; sizeable Δ ++ , Δ 0 , and N 0 production is observed in the (Nπ) mass spectra. Two different components are present in the data following power-law energy dependence of the type p lab − n with n 1 = −1.63 ± 0.13 and n 2 = −0.96 ± 0.07, respectively, indicating the onset of mechanisms in competition with pion exchange at ISR energies.

We report results on a new measurement of the double diffractive reaction pp → (p π + π − ) (p π + π − ) at the ISR obtained with the Split Field Magnet detector. Experimental procedures and data analysis are discussed in detail. The cross section measured at the five standard ISR energies exhibits an increase of (55 ± 7)% in the s -range from 549 to 3892 GeV 2 .
