Inclusive production of ifπ ± , K ± and p has been studied near charm threshold for c.m. energies between 3.6 and 5.2 GeV. Differential and scaling cross sections together with particle multiplicities have been determinated. By comparing data below and above charm threshold the charm contribution to if π ± and K ± production has been extracted. A comparison has been made between inclusice p production and inelastic electron-proton scattering. To study differences between three-gluon annihilation and two-quark production of the spectra from J/ decay and from non-resonant production at 3.6 GeV has been compared.

The inclusive production cross sections and mean multiplicities of π±, K±, p, and p¯ in e+e− annihilation at a c.m. energy of 29 GeV have been measured with the time-projection chamber at PEP, using ionization energy loss to separate particle types. On average, 10.7±0.6 π±, 1.35±0.13 K±, and 0.60±0.08 p,p¯ are contained in an annihilation event. The fraction of pions among final-state particles decreases from over 95% at 0.3 GeV/c momentum to about 60% at high momentum; the kaon and proton fractions rise correspondingly.

Production of φ mesons in e+e− annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV has been observed with the time-projection chamber detector at the PEP storage ring. The φ production rate has been measured in the energy range 0.075<x<0.55 (x=2Eφs), giving 0.077±0.012(stat)±0.016(syst) φ's per event. The average value of pt2 relative to the thrust axis is 1.0±0.4 (GeV/c)2.

The inclusive production cross section of Λ, Λ¯ in e+e− annihilation at a c.m. energy of 29 GeV has been measured with the time-projection-chamber detector at PEP. The average Λ, Λ¯ multiplicity has been measured to be 0.197 ± 0.012(stat.) ±0.017(syst.). Inclusive production cross sections for photons and π0's ine+e− annihilation at a center of mass energy of 29 GeV have been measured. The π0 production spectrum agrees with a corresponding measurement for π±. The ratio of the π0 inclusive rate to the average for π± is 0.92±0.14. The fractions of the total energy carried by photons and π0's are 0.244±0.016 and 0.217±0.033, respectively. The fraction of total energy carried by all stable hadrons, prompt leptons and photons is determined to be 0.938±0.045, leaving 0.062±0.045 for neutrinos.

The inclusive process π++P→K¯ *0(890)+X is studied at 16 GeV/c using a 2-m streamer chamber containing a central liquid hydrogen target. From photographs triggered by detection of a forward K− meson, the signal K¯ K−*0π+ is extracted. The inclusive rate for K¯ * production into the forward hemisphere σ(xF>0.3) is 115±27 μb; the pT2 distribution is found to have a slope constant of 3.3±0.6 (GeV/c)2. The Feynman-x distribution for K¯ *0 is consistent with a Kuti-Weisskopf model in which the valence and sea quarks of the incident pion interact with only the sea quarks of the target proton.

We report measurements of π±K±, and p, p¯ inclusive cross sections and fractions in e+e− annihilation at s=29 GeV, for the momentum interval 0.01<z=ppbeam<0.90. The analysis is based on approximately 70 pb−1 of data collected with the TPC2γ detector facility at the SLAC storage ring PEP. Detector upgrades result in significantly improved momentum coverage and precision of the data, compared to previous measurements.
