The angular dependences of proton photoproduction from the nuclei 12 C, 63 Cu and 208 Pb irradiated by bremsstrahlung γ-quanta with maximum energy 4.5 GeV, both in the cumulative region (i.e. in the kinematical region in which the production of protons in the collision of γ-quanta of the given energy with the quasi-free nuclear nucleon is forbidden) and in the non-cumulative region, are investigated. The experimental data obtained are compared with the results of theoretical calculations of cumulative proton photoproduction according to the following models: the “quasi-two-body” scaling model, the low-nucleon correlation model, the fluctuon model and the cluster model.

The measurement of invariant cross sections for the production of protons by 400 GeV protons from a variety of nuclear targets is described. Results are given for Li6, Be, C, A1, Cu, and Ta at 70°, 90°, 118°, 137° and 160° for detected protons from 0.4 to 1.4 GeV/c. Some angular distributions are given over a wider selection of angles. We report new measurements of the inclusive electroproduction of forward protons carried out at the Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory at Cornell University. Data were taken with deuterium at the (W, Q2) points (2.15 GeV, 1.2 GeV2), (2.15, 4.0), and (3.11, 1.2); data were taken with hydrogen at these points and at the points (2.15, 2.0), (2.67, 3.3), and (3.11, 1.7). The invariant structure function is presented in terms of W, Q2, and ω.

We have measured, as a function of transverse momentum (p⊥), the invariant cross section Edσd3p for the production of π±, K±, p, p¯, d, and d¯ in proton collisions with a tungsten (W) target at incident proton energies of 200, 300, and 400 GeV. The measurements were made in the region of 90° in the c.m. system of the incident proton and a single nucleon at rest. Measurements were also made with 300-GeV protons incident on Be, Ti, and W targets of equal interaction length. These p-nucleus measurements, which show a strong dependence on atomic number at high p⊥, were used to extract effective proton-nucleon cross sections by extrapolation to atomic number unity. At large values of the scaling variable x⊥=2p⊥s, where s is the square of the c.m. energy, the pion data are found to be well represented by the expression (s)−ne−ax⊥, with n=11.0±0.4 and a=36.0±0.4. x⊥<0.35, where similar measurements have been made at the CERN ISR, our data are in good agreement with the ISR data.

An experiment has been performed to study the inclusive photoproduction of π 0 mesons. Photoproduced π 0 's were detected in a hodoscope consisting of 14 lead glass Cerenkov counters. To obtain the cross sections at a photon energy of 6 GeV we used the photon-difference method. Data are presented in terms of the Feynman variable x = q ‖ ∗ (√s/2) and the trnasverse momentum q⊥. We have measured four q ⊥ distributions at x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8. The results dhow that the π 0 rate at small values of q ⊥ is smaller than the π± rate. The data can be fitted smoothly by a form A exp (− Bq ⊥ 2 ) with a value about 3.5 GeV −2 for the slope parameter B .

Invariant cross-sections are presented for the inclusive reaction p + p → π o + anything, Measurements of large transverse momentum π o 's (2.5 GeV/ c < p ⊥ <9 GeV/ c ) were made near 90° at the CERN ISR at five centre-of-mass energies (√ s = 23.5, 30.6, 44.8, 52.7 and 62.4 GeV. At large p ⊥ , the invariant cross-sections are seem to vary with s and p ⊥ , in good agreement with a fit of the form Ap ⊥ − n F ( p ⊥ /√ s ), with n ≈8 and F ( p ⊥ /√ s )≈ exp (−26 p ⊥ /√ s ).
