We present results on inclusive baryon and meson resonance production in\(\bar pp\) interactions at 7.3 GeV/c. Total inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections are given for Δ(1232),∑*(1385), ϱ0,f andK*±(892) production. For the meson resonances separation into annihilation and non-annihilation components has been made, the annihilation component being dominant at this energy. We find that the energy dependence of inclusive cross sections for ϱ0 production inpp interactions and\(\bar pp\) non-annihilations shows a type of scaling behaviour previously reported for ϕ, ψ, ψ′ and ϒ production inpp interactions.Δ++, ϱ0 andK*± production are studied in terms of Feynmanx,y* andpT2. For the vector mesons we compare they* andx dependences with the predictions of simple quark models.

CHARGED PARTICLE AND PI0 MULTIPLICITY DISTRIBUTIONS AND THE ANNIHILATION PROPERTIES OF ANTI-P P INTERACTIONS AT 70-GeV/c

Inspire Record 179759 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.16433

The elastic and inelastic\(\bar p\)p cross sections at 70 GeV/c have been determined in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. The topological cross sections were measured and the moments of the inelastic multiplicity distribution are 〈nc〉=6.16±0.09, 〈nc〉/D=2.04±0.05 andf2cc=2.97±0.03. The average number of Dalitz pairs per inelastic event is (3.12±0.09)×10−2. Assuming that these all arise from π0 decay the average π0 multiplicity is\(\langle n_{\pi ^0 } \rangle= 2.71 \pm 0.14\). The\(\bar p\)p−pp cross section differences lead to an annihilation cross section σA = 4.42±0.41 mb and the moments of the annihilation multiplicty distribution are 〈nA〉=8.0±0.3, 〈nA〉/D=2.5±0.2 andf2A−−=−1.4±0.3. An independent check of σA was made by investigating fast forward charged and neutral secondary interactions in the TST and in the surrounding neon-hydrogen mixture, and gives a value σA = 5.0±1.6 mb. The ratio of fast\(\bar n\) to\(\bar p\) production in non-annihilation interactions at 70 GeV/c is found to be 0.45±0.11.

Charged Multiplicities of High Mass Diffractive $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $p^\pm$ States

A measurement is reported of charged multiplicity distributions of high-mass diffractive π±, K±, and p± states produced in 100 and 200 GeV/c hadron-proton collisions, h+p→X+p. The distributions are described well by a Gaussian function that depends only on the available mass M=Mx−Mh, has a maximum at n0≅2M12, and a peak-to-width ratio n0D≅2.

DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF THE GAMMA AND CHARGE MULTIPLICITIES IN ANTI-P P ANNIHILATIONS AT REST

The γ-to-charge multiplicity ratio 〈Mγ〉〈Mch〉 in N¯N annihilations is restricted by I-spin conservation. In deuterium, the ratio is constrained by I-spin conservation to be equal to 1, while an experiment reported a value of 1.24±0.03; this measurement was based on missing and γ energies. The experiment reported in this paper measures the rate of conversion of γ's as a function of converter thickness and obtains 〈Mγ〉〈Mch〉=1.26±0.03 for p¯p annihilations, which is in agreement with the large γ excess observed in deuterium. Statistical models which ignore I-spin conservation predict such a γ excess, while those taking into account I-spin conservation predict values near 1.

Experimental Study of Single Particle Inclusive Hadron Scattering and Associated Multiplicities

An experiment using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer (SAS) facility and an associated nonmagnetic vertex detector studied the reactions a+p→c+X, where a and c were π±, K±, p, or p¯. Extensive measurements were made at 100 and 175 GeV/c beam momenta with the outgoing hadrons detected in the SAS covering a kinematic range 0.12<x<1.0 and pT<1.25 GeV/c. Additional data covering a more restricted range in x were also gathered at 70 GeV/c incident momentum. In this high-statistics experiment, the identification of both the incoming and outgoing charged hadrons were made with a total of eight Čerenkov counters. New and extensive single-particle inclusive data for charged-particle production in low-pT hadronic fragmentation are presented. The average associated charged-particle multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions are also given.

By using (pp) interactions at three different c.m. energies,\(\left( {\sqrt 8 } \right)_{pp} \)=30, 44, 62 GeV, it is shown that the average charged-particle multiplicity <nch>vs. the invariant mass of the hadronic systemm1,2 has the same behaviour as it hasvs. 2Ehad. Moreover, in both cases <nch> is shown to be nearly independent of\(\left( {\sqrt 8 } \right)_{pp} \) and in good agreement with the average charged-particle multiplicity measured in the (e+e−) annihilation.

Energy Dependence of Jet Measures in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

The jet character of the hadronic final states produced ine+e− annihilations is studied in terms of jet measures such as thrust, sphericity, jet opening angle and jet masses, in the energy range 7.7 to 31.6 GeV. All distributions and averages have been corrected for detector effects and initial state radiation. The energy dependence of the averages of these jet quantities is used to estimate the contributions due to perturbative QCD and fragmentation effects. Correlations between the jet measures and the multiplicity of charged hadrons are also presented.

The inclusive production ofK*±(890), ρρ(770), ω0(780) andf0(1,270) mesons is studied in\(\bar pp\) experiment at 32GeV/c in the MIRABELLE bubble chamber by the analysis of (K0π±) and (π+π−) invariant mass distributions. The inclusive cross sections are σ(K*±)=2.45±0.30 mb, σ(ρ0)=8.8 ±0.9 mb, σ(ω+)≃6.2 mb, and σ(f0)=2.2±0.7 mb. The C.M. longitudinal distribution of theK*±(890) is slightly shifted to the primary particles fragmentation regions; the ρ0 is produced more centrally. The studied mesons alone are responsible for 40% of final state poins. The production features of various resonances are compared with quark models predictions.
