Results on the multiplicity structure of diffractively excited meson and proton systems in À+/K+p interactions at 250 GeV/c are presented for diffractive masses up to about 9 GeV. The energy dependence of the average charge multiplicity and the shape of the multiplicity distribution in terms of KNO-scaling and negative binomial distribution are investigated. The diffractive systems are compared toe+e−,lh and non-diffractivehh final states as suggested by modern approaches of the Pomeron-hadron collision. A study is made of the rescattering phenomenon in deuterons by means of an analysis of ν/xxx;-d interactions in the WA25 (BEBC) experiment at CERN. Experimental data are presented on the rescattering fraction, its energy and multiplicity dependence, on the rapidity spectra of specific particles, on the multiplicity properties of rescatter interactions, and on strange-particle production. Rescattering offers an opportunity to study the behaviour of the produced particlein statu nascendi. The experimental phenomena are discussed in the framework of the formation time formalism. The proper time of hadronization τf is evaluated to be ∼0.5fm/c. A possible reduction of formation time in low-multiplicity events is discussed. Some differences between neutrino and hadron-induced rescattering in deuterons are attributed to the constituent quark structure of pions and nucleons. The experimental results are relevant for the issue of quark-gluon plasma formation in heavy-ion collisions.

INVERSE RELATIVE DISPERSION.
The Fermilab hybrid 30-in. bubble-chamber spectrometer was exposed to a tagged 147-GeV/c positive beam containing π+, K+, and p. A sample of 3003 K+p, 19410 pp, and 20745 π+p interactions is used to derive σn, 〈n〉, f2cc, and 〈nc〉D for each beam particle. These values are compared to values obtained at other, mostly lower, beam momenta. The overall dependence of 〈n〉 on Ea, the available center-of-mass energy, for these three reactions as well as π−p and pp interactions has been determined.

An experiment using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer (SAS) facility and an associated nonmagnetic vertex detector studied the reactions a+p→c+X, where a and c were π±, K±, p, or p¯. Extensive measurements were made at 100 and 175 GeV/c beam momenta with the outgoing hadrons detected in the SAS covering a kinematic range 0.12<x<1.0 and pT<1.25 GeV/c. Additional data covering a more restricted range in x were also gathered at 70 GeV/c incident momentum. In this high-statistics experiment, the identification of both the incoming and outgoing charged hadrons were made with a total of eight Čerenkov counters. New and extensive single-particle inclusive data for charged-particle production in low-pT hadronic fragmentation are presented. The average associated charged-particle multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions are also given.

We present results on inclusive particle production in the antineutrino charged current induced hadron jets observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. Fractional energy distributions, particle ratios and average multiplicities of the hadrons in the jets are measured. Ratios between the inclusive production rates of different mesons in the jets are studied to seek evidence for the d-quark origin of the observed hadrons. Good over-all agreement with the hypothesis of d-quark fragmentation with universal fragmentation functions obeying isospin systematics is established.

We have studied inclusive KS0, Λ, and Λ¯ production in π+d interactions at 24 GeV/c. The observed cross sections are 2.5±0.13 mb for KS0, 1.62±0.09 mb for Λ, and 0.12±0.02 mb for Λ¯. Longitudinal- and transverse-momentum distributions of the produced particles are presented. The average charged multiplicities of the system associated with a KS0 or with a Λ are presented and discussed. A nonzero average Λ polarization (-0.10±0.03) is observed. The x distribution of the backward (forward) KS0 and Λ produced in the reaction are in agreement with the x distribution of valence quarks in nucleons in nuclear target (pion beam), as predicted by the quark-recombination model of particle production applied to nuclear targets.

Charged- and neutral-particle production from 400-GeV/c pp collisions are measured simultaneously using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. The π0 and K0 cross sections are rising at Fermilab energies, while the Λ0 cross section remains fairly constant. Similarly, the average number of π0's and K0's increases as a function of the number of negative particles in an event, yet no such dependence is noted for the Λ0's. The ratio of average number of π0 to average number of π− per inelastic collisions is found to be constant at Serpukhov and Fermilab energies (40 to 400 GeV/c) and equal to 1.22±0.02. Cross sections for Σ0 and Σ¯0 production are measured and limits are found for η0 and ω0 production. Neutral- and charged-pion correlations are compared with five pion-production models.
