A liquid hydrogen target was used to study the nuclear fragmentation of beams of relativistic heavy ions, Ne22 to Ni58, over an energy range 400 to 900 MeV/nucleon. The experiments were carried out at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Bevalac HISS facility, using the charge-velocity-rigidity method to identify the charged fragments. Here we describe the general concept of the experiment and present total charge-changing cross sections obtained from 17 separate runs. These new measured cross sections display an energy dependence which follows semiempirical model predictions. The mass dependence of the cross sections behaves as predicted by optical models, but within the experimental energy range, the optical model parameters display a clear energy dependence. The isospin of the projectile nuclei also appears to be an important factor in the interaction process.

The cross section of the charged current process e − p → v e + hadrons is measured at HERA for transverse momenta of the hadron system larger than 25 GeV. The size of the cross section exhibits the W propagator.

Using a prototype of a large hadron calorimeter, vertical cosmic ray hadrons were recorded and the all-hadron flux was measured in the range from 5 GeV to 10 TeV. Hadron reconstruction and identification are described. We observe a vertical flux of dI/dEh=(1.59+or-0.24)*10-5(Eh/100 GeV)-2.72+or-0.10 (m2 s sr GeV)-1. The flux compares well with values obtained in other experiments. Total inelastic cross sections for protons scattered by nuclei in air are deduced from the unaccompanied hadron flux and compared with the values reported by other authors.
PROTON AIR CROSS SECTION.
The s dependence of the electromagnetic proton form factors in the time-like region has been determined from the threshold ( s = 4 M p 2 ) up to s = 4.2 GeV 2 . Data were collected in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics. Total and differential cross section of the p p → e − e + reaction have been measured. The electric and magnetic form factors are found to have comparable value. The observed form factor shows a clear steep s dependence close to the threshold.

The reactions γp→K+ Λ and γp→K+ Σ0 have been measured with the multiparticle detector system SAPHIR at ELSA in Bonn. Besides the differential cross sections the Λ polarization and, for the first time, the Σ0 polarization have been determined in a photon induced reaction. All data are presented as functions of the photon energy (from threshold up to 1.47 GeV) and of the kaon production angle (0°–180°). The polarization of both Λ and Σ0 is substantial at all energies and varies strongly with the production angle.

In the experiments at the SPHINX facility in the 70 GeV proton beam of the IHEP accelerator the diffractive production reactionsp+N→[Σ(1385)0K+] +N andp+N→[Σ(1385)0K+]+N+ (neutral particles) were studied. In the effective mass spectra of the [Σ(1385)0K+] system in these processes there were no signals from the anomalously narrow baryon stateNϕ (1960) which had been observed earlier in the measurement at the BIS-2 setup.

We report the first measurement of the total charge-loss cross section σtot=σem+σnuc and partial cross sections (for ΔZ=1, 2, ..., 9) of 11.4 A GeV197Au nuclei in various targets. The large Coulomb barrier for Au reduces the electromagnetic contribution σem in a Pb target to only 18% of σnuc, compared with ∼ 70% for 14.5 A GeV28Si and 120% for 200 A GeV32S. With σem taken to be ∝ZT1.8, σnuc can be fitted with σnuc=α(AP1/3 +AT1/3−b)2, with b=0.83 and α=59 mb, essentially the same as found at energies of 1 to 2 A GeV. Electromagnetic partial cross sections for ΔZ=1 exceed ∼ 40 mb in the Pb, Sn, Cu, and Fe targets and are substantial for larger values ofΔZ in the heavier targets.

We present a systematic analysis on the helium projectile fragments produced from 10.6 A GeV197Auemulsion interactions in an experiment conducted at the Brookhaven AGS. Total charge changing and partial production cross-sections are measured experimentally on the basis of helium multiplicity. The multiplicity distribution of helium fragments which are produced collectively obey a KNO scaling. The transverse momentum distribution of these particles indicates that they are produced from two different independent sources.
THE TOTAL CHARGE CHANGING CROSS-SECTION WAS DETERMINED FROM THE INTERACTION MEAN FREE PATH OF NUCLEAR INTERACTIONS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DENSITY OF ATOMS IN EMULSION.
