In a high statistics (90 events/μb) bubble chamber experiment, the reactions π − p→K s 0 K ± π ∓ n have been studied at 3.95 GeV/ c . A significant enhancement is observed in the ( K K π) system which we attribute to the production of the E(1420) meson. For its mass, M , and width, Λ, we find M =1426±6 MeV and Γ =40±15 MeV. The E(1420) quantum numbers are determined to be I G J P =0 + 1 + with a branching ratio E → K ∗ K + c.c E →[δπ+( K ∗ K + c.c. )]=0.86±0.12 , where δ→ K K . The cross section for the reaction π − p→En, with E→K 0 K ± π ± , is 8.2±1.0 μ b. Forward and backward productions are observed in the approximate ratio 2:1. The SU(3) assignment of the E(1420) meson is discussed.

Photoproduction is studied at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV using a linearly polarized monoenergetic photon beam in a hydrogen bubble chamber. We discuss the experimental procedure, the determination of channel cross sections, and the analysis of the channel γp→pπ+π−. A model-independent analysis of the ρ0-decay angular distribution allows us to measure nine independent density-matrix elements. From these we find that the reaction γp→pρ0 proceeds almost completely through natural parity exchange for squared momentum transfers |t|<1 GeV2 and that the ρ production mechanism is consistent with s-channel c.m. helicity conservation for |t|<0.4 GeV2. A cross section for the production of π+π− pairs in the s-channel c.m. helicity-conserving p-wave state is determined. The ρ mass shape is studied as a function of momentum transfer and is found to be inconsistent with a t-independent Ross-Stodolsky factor. Using a t-dependent parametrization of the ρ0 mass shape we derive a phenomenological ρ0 cross section. We compare our phenomenological ρ0 cross section with other experiments and find good agreement for 0.05<|t|<1 GeV2. We discuss the discrepancies in the various determinations of the forward differential cross section. We study models for ρ0 photoproduction and find that the Söding model best describes the data. Using the Söding model we determine a ρ0 cross section. We determine cross sections and nine density-matrix elements for γp→Δ++π−. The parity asymmetry for Δ++ production is incompatible with simple one-pion exchange. We compare Δ++ production with models.

Transverse momentum spectra of η mesons have been measured near the free nucleon-nucleon production threshold in the heavy ion reactions Ar40+ Canat, Kr86 + Zrnat, and Au197+ Au197 at 1.0A GeV and also in Ar40+ Canat at 1.5A GeV. The measured transverse momentum distributions are compared to model calculations. The relative abundance of Δ(1232) and N(1535) resonances excited in the collision is deduced. The photoproduction of ρ0 and ρ− mesons has been studied at 3 GeV in the reactions γd→dπ±π−, γd→psnπ+π−, and γd→pspπ−π0. For ρ0 and ρ− production in these reactions we present the total and differential cross sections, the decay angular distributions, and the spin density matrix elements. The photoproduction of the ρ0 is found to be consistent with s-channel helicity conservation and is dominated by natural-parity exchange. The ρ− meson production has approximately equal natural- and unnatural-parity-exchange contributions. The unnatural-parity-exchange contribution is consistent with one-pion exchange and is used to estimate the value of Γρπγ.

A study of 205-GeV/c π−p interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

Results on charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A and 30A GeV are presented and compared to data at lower and higher energies. A rapid change of the energy dependence is observed around 30A GeV for the yields of pions and kaons as well as for the shape of the transverse mass spectra. Results of a high-statistics study of elastic scattering and meson resonances produced by π−p interactions at 8 GeV/c are presented. Large statistics and small systematic errors permit examination of the complete kinematic region. Total differential cross sections are given for ρ0,−, f0, g0,−, Δ±, Δ0, and N* resonances. Spin-density matrix elements and Legendre-polynomial moments are given for ρ, f, and Δ resonances. The results for ρ0 and f0 resonances are compared with the predictions of a Regge-pole-exchange model. Properties of the above resonances are compared and discussed. In particular, we present evidence that the ρ0 and f0 production mechanisms are similar. The similarity of the g0 t distribution to that of the ρ0 and f0 suggests a common production mechanism for all three resonances.

Transverse mass spectra of protons emitted in Au+Au collisions at beam energies of 6, 8, and 10.8 GeV/nucleon have been measured as a function of collision centrality over a rapidity range 0.5<ylab<1.5. The spectra are well reproduced by Boltzmann distributions over the measured transverse mass region, which allows for extrapolation of the data to derive the rapidity density and apparent temperature of the emitting source. The shapes of the rapidity distributions suggest significant transparency or substantial longitudinal expansion in even the most central collisions at all three beam energies. The data are analyzed within a simple thermal source plus longitudinal expansion model.

Neutron fluences were measured from 435 MeV/nucleon Nb ions stopping in a Nb target and 272 MeV/nucleon Nb ions stopping in targets of Nb and Al for neutrons above 20 MeV and at laboratory angles between 3° and 80°. The resultant spectra were integrated over angles to produce neutron energy distributions and over energy to produce neutron angular distributions. The total neutron yields for each system were obtained by integrating over the angular distributions. The angular distributions from all three systems are peaked forward, and the energy distributions from all three systems show an appreciable yield of neutrons with velocities greater than the beam velocity. Comparison of the total neutron yields from the two Nb+Nb systems suggests that the average neutron multiplicity decreases with decreasing projectile energy. Comparison of the total yields from the two 272 MeV/nucleon systems suggests that the total yields show the same dependence on projectile and target mass number as do total inclusive neutron cross sections. The data are compared with Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model calculations.

The differential cross sections for KL0p→KS0p scattering are presented in several momentum intervals between 1 and 10 GeVc. The data are strongly peaked in the forward direction, characteristic of a large s-channel helicity-nonflip scattering amplitude in this reaction, and a distinct break in the differential cross section occurs at |t|=0.3 GeV2. The phase of the forward scattering amplitude, φ, is consistent with being independent of momentum. The average value of the phase, φ=−133.9±4.0∘, corresponds to a Regge trajectory α(0)=0.49±0.05 in agreement with the canonical ρ, ω0 Regge intercept, α(0)∼0.5. However, this result disagrees with the Regge trajectory determined from the energy dependence of the forward cross section, α(0)=0.30±0.03, indicating a breaking of the Regge phase-energy relation. Comparisons of KL0p→KS0p and π−p→π0n scattering data reveal substantial differences in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections. Comparisons to KN charge-exchange data then suggest that direct-channel (absorption) effects may explain the differences in πN and KN channels.

We have observed the π+π− decay of the ρ′(1600) in the production reaction γp→ρ′p at 20 GeV. Using a calculation which takes into account the interference of the ρ′ with the ρ(770) and a Drell background, we find good evidence that this resonance is a radial excitation of the ρ(770). The background interference strongly distorts the angular distributions predicted by a purely s-channel helicity-conserving production mechanism. We measure m0=(1.55±0.07) GeV/c2 and Γ0=(0.28−0.08+0.03) GeV/c2.

The results presented in this paper are obtained from an analysis of bubble-chamber pictures of K−d interactions at an incident K− momentum of 5.5 GeV/c. Generally, the quasitwo-body final states are produced peripherally, with a small backward peak occurring in some of the final states. The final states Σ−ω, Σ−ρ0, and Σ−φ appear to be produced primarily by vector-meson exchange. In the final state Λ(1520)π− the decay distributions of the Λ(1520) hyperon are found to be consistent with a vector-exchagne production process with M2 coupling at the nucleon vertex. The predictions of the independent-quark model and of other symmetry schemes, namely that the forward cross sections for Σ−ρ0, Σ−ω, Σ−φ production be in the ratios 1: 1: 2, are not inconsistent with our experimental values.

The NA44 Collaboration has measured yields and differential distributions of K+, K-, pi+, pi- in transverse kinetic energy and rapidity, around the center-of-mass rapidity in 158 A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. A considerable enhancement of K+ production per pi is observed, as compared to p+p collisions at this energy. To illustrate the importance of secondary hadron rescattering as an enhancement mechanism, we compare strangeness production at the SPS and AGS with predictions of the transport model RQMD.

Double differential cross sections have been measured for pi+ and K+ emitted around midraidity in d+A and He+A collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.15 GeV/nucleon. The total pi+ yield increases by a factor of about 2 when using an alpha projectile instead of a deuteron whereas the K+ yield increases by a factor of about 4. According to transport calculations, the K+ enhancement depends both on the number of hadron-hadron collisions and on the energy available in those collisions: their center-of-mass energy increases with increasing number of projectile nucleons.
The spectra are fitted by the equation d3(sig)/d3(p) = CONST*exp(-Ekin/SLOPE), where Ekin is PI+ kinectic energy in the nucleon-nucleon center of mass frame.

Mid-rapidity spectra and yields of K$^-$ and K$^+$ have been measured for Au+Au collisions at 4, 6, 8, and 10.7 AGeV. The K$^-$ yield increases faster with beam energy than for K$^+$ and hence the K$^-$/K$^+$ ratio increases with beam energy. This ratio is studied as a function of both $\sqrt{s}$ and $\sqrt{s}$-$\sqrt{s_{th}}$ which allows the direct comparison of the kaon yields with respect to the production threshold in p+p reactions. For equal $\sqrt{s}$ - $\sqrt{s_{th}}$ the measured ratio K$^-$/K$^+$=0.2 at energies above threshold in contrast to the K$^-$/K$^+$ ratio of near unity observed at energies below threshold. The use of the K$^-$/K$^+$ ratio to test the predicted changes of kaon properties in dense nuclear matter is discussed.
