We have measured the reactions π±p→π±p and π+p→K+Σ+ at 5.0 GeV/c in the region 2.2<−t<3.5 (GeV/c)2. We find the minimum cross section of the dip at −t=2.8 (GeV/c)2 in π+p elastic scattering to be 0.16 ± 0.05 μb/GeV2. The π−p differential cross section exhibits similar structure, while the π+p→K+Σ+ channel shows a steady decline in cross section as |t| increases. The polarization of the Σ+ remains large and positive to at least −t=2.8 (GeV/c)2.

Data at two additional π+ momenta (1.28 and 1.41 GeVc) in the reaction π+p→Σ+K+ are presented. Charge independence is tested over the c.m. energy range 1.820 to 2.090 GeV; we used our data for the Σ+K+ channel and published data for the π−p→Σ0K0 and Σ−K+ channels.

The polarisation of the recoil sigma in the reaction π + p → K + Σ + has been measured at 12 production angles at a beam momentum of 1.11 GeV /c using counters and spark chambers. The new data are compared with existing phase shift solutions of π p → K Σ channels in the low energy region.
THE ASYMMETRY PARAMETER, ALPHA, FOR SIGMA+ --> P PI0 IS CLOSE TO -1. THE LAST DATA VALUE IS DEDUCED FROM ALL THE EXPERIMENTAL EVENTS.
Measurements of the differential cross section for the reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and π+p→K+Y*+(1385) are reported at 3.5, 3.75, 4.0, 4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. Polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is also reported at 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. At small |t|, the cross section for π+p→K+Σ+ is well described by an exponential Aebt with slopes in the range b≈8−10 (GeV/c)−2; for |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2 this slope decreases considerably. The cross section for π+p→K+Y*+(1385) is well described for |t|>0.2 (GeV/c)2 by a single exponential of slope about half that for π+p→K+Σ+; there is no break near |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2. We observe a dip in this cross section near t=0. The polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is consistent with zero for |t|<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and becomes large and positive for larger |t|.

In a counter and wire spark chamber experiment with a polarized target, backward kaons were detected, and the Σ + 's identified by a missing-mass technique. An average polarization of −0.08 ± 0.05 was found for −0.2 < u < 0.1 GeV 2 .
THE MEAN POLARIZATION FOR ALL EVENTS IS -0.08 +- 0.05.
Experimental results are presented for the available channels in the 1.2 GeV/ c π + p interaction. An isobaric model with incoherent addition of the amplitudes is used to determine the π, Δ and N ∗ abundance rates in the π + π o p final state. The multipole parameters in the density matrix of the Δ ++ are determined as functions of its production angle.

For the first time, the reactions π + p →K + ∑ + and K − p→ π − ∑ + have been studied in the same apparatus. This has been done at an adequately high momentum (10.1 GeV/ c ) to allow a check of the prediction of exchange degeneracy, that the differential cross sections should be converging at high energy. We have measured the cross section for momentum transfers t between t min and t = −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . We find that for both reactions the differential cross section shows an exponential fall, with no deviations right in to t = t min (where some other experiments have shown a dip in the cross section). Furthermore, we find the magnitude of the differential cross sections to be closely similar at t = 0, with a ratio R= ( d σ d t) t=0 ( K − p →π − ∑ + ) ( d σ d t) t=0 (π + p → K + ∑ + However, the slope for the positive reaction is about 19% steeper than that for the negative reaction.

Measurement of the exotic exchange reaction π − p → K + Σ − has been performed at 5 and 8 GeV, in the −0.015 to −0.13 and −0.009 to −0.15 (GeV/ c ) 2 range of t repectively. We give the value near t = 0 of the differential cross section at 5 GeV, 21 −21 +76 nb/(GeV/ c ) 2 , and an upper limit (< 37 nb/GeV/ c ) 2 ) at 8 GeV. As a check the measured differential cross section is given at both energies for the reaction π + p → K + Σ + in the same range of t ★★ ★★ Results presented here were included in the thesis of Doctorat d′Etat by M.N. Cross-section, angular distribution and polarization measurements are presented at six incident π + energies for the reaction π + p → K + Σ + . Results at already studied energies are compatible with existing data and roughly agree with predictions of partial-waves analyses. However, new results around 1.920 GeV are in disagreement with such predictions, casting some doubt on the determination of decay branching ratios of the T = 3 2 isobars around this mass into K + Σ + .
