Inclusive Single Particle Production at 90-Degrees in the Center-Of-Mass System for Nuclear Targets and 28.5-GeV/c Incident Protons

The invariant cross section for the inclusive production of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ is presented for proton-nucleon interactions at plab=28.5 GeV/c. Beryllium, titanium, and tungsten targets were used and the yields were extrapolated to A=1 using the power law σ∼Aα. The exponent α increases with pT, except for protons. The pT dependence of the cross sections is compared with a simple fireball model.

Precision Measurement of n p Charge Exchange Cross-Section at 647-MeV

The differential cross section for n−p elastic scattering in the angular region 145°<θc.m.<180° has been measured with high statistical accuracy using the monoenergetic neutron beam at Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility. The results differ significantly from previous Dubna and Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator results but agree reasonably well with recent Saclay data except at extreme backward angles.

Search for Parity Nonconservation in Atomic Bismuth

In a search for optical rotation near the 8755-Å magnetic-dipole absorption line in atomic Bi, our first results set an upper limit F<10−6 on a parity nonconserving amplitude associated with the line. This limit improves upon earlier parity tests in atoms by three orders of magnitude. Further improvement of at least another order of magnitude appears possible by this method which should then provide an exacting test of parity conservation in the neutral weak-current interaction in atoms.

Inclusive pi- and gamma Production in 24-GeV/c p p Collisions

We report the 24-GeV/c inclusive π− yield near θc.m.=90° for 0.5<~PT≲2.2 GeV/c. No high-PT excess is seen at this energy. In addition we have obtained the inclusive γ-ray yield from a measurement of low-mass e+e− pairs. This yield is compared with that expected from π0-, η-, and ω-meson decay, to provide limits on possible direct photon production.

Comparison of Neutral Particle Production in 100 GeV/c $\bar{p}p$ and pp Interactions.

We derive cross-sections for the inclusive productiion in p̄p interactions at 100 GeV /c of π 0 , K S 0 and Λ 0 Λ 0 of 91.5±5.7 mb, 5.2±0.4 mb and 4.8±0.4 mb respectively, which are all higher than pp cross-sections at energy. We find indications that these differences can be attributed to “annihilation” processes.
