Elastic scattering of 2.7 GeV/c antiprotons on protons

The differential elastic scattering cross section for 2.7 GeV c antiprotons on protons has been studied using film from the 20″ BNL hydrogen bubble chamber. The diffraction pattern based on a total sample of 7300 events shows a sharp forward maximum, a first diffraction minimum, and a second maximum. The forward diffraction peak is fitted by ( d σ d t ) elastic =[325 ± 6 mb ( GeV c ) 2 ] exp [−13.3 ± 0.2( GeV c ) −2 t and the total elastic cross section is found to be 25.6 ± 0.6 mb. The first and second diffraction peaks are fitted by the optical model formula for a “black” disc. d σ d t ∼ [j 1 (2k R sin 1 2 θ)] 2 (1 + a cos θ) 2 where R = 1.2 fm and a = −5.

$K^- p$ elastic scattering at 10 GeV/c

K − p elastic scattering at 10 GeV/ c is studied on ∼3600 bubble chamber events. The elastic cross section is found to be σ el = (3.20 ± 0.14)mb and the ratio σ el σ tot = (0.142 ± 0.006) , that is below the upper limit of 0.185 suggested in a model by Van Hove. The value of the forward differential cross section is consistent with zero real part to the scattering amplitude. The slope of d σ d t is similar to that for π ± and greater than that of K + , with no evidence for shrinkage of the diffraction peak. No events of backward scattering were observed. The Regge-pole model of Phillips and Rarita gives a good fit to the data.

Proton-deuterium bremsstrahlung at 200 MeV

Double differential cross sections for photons above 20 MeV energy were measured for the p+d reaction at 200 MeV. A comparison is made with previous measurements at 140 and 197 MeV. Below 80 MeV photon energy the cross sections and the angular distribution are in reasonable agreement with a recent calculation of the free pnγ elementary process.

A measurement of the spin correlation parameter C NN (θ) in n-p scattering at 181 MeV

The spin correlation parameter C NN has been measured for n-p elastic scattering at 181 MeV. A comparison with predictions from various phase shift sets and potential models reveals sizeable deviations from the for the data Paris potential and Saclay phase shifts. For the Paris potential the deviations are directly related to an overprediction of the 3 D 2 phase shift parameter.

Analysis of $\bar{p}p\to K^+ K^- \pi^+ \pi^-$ around 1 GeV/c

Approximately 100 000 four-prong antiproton annihilations in hydrogen were measured. A clean, unbiased sample of 842 K + K − π + π − events was obtained. This reaction is dominated by K ∗ (∼45%) and ϱ 0 (∼20%) production, with smaller amounts of A 2 0 (∼15%) and ϕ (∼5%) production. 25% of the reactions involved double resonance production. No significant three-body resonance production is observed.

$K^+$ nucleon elastic scattering at 180° between 1.0 and 1.5 GeV/c incident momentum

We have measured the cross section at 180° for K + p and K + n elastic scattering in the momentum range 1.0 to 1.5 GeV/ c . The K + n cross section was measured on deuterium and the K + p on hydrogen and deuterium. We were thus able to measure directly the difference between free nucleon (proton) scattering and bound nucleon (proton) scattering at large angles. This difference was found to be small and within our experimental accuracy the K + p(n) cross section should be equal to the K + p (free) cross section at 180°. We found no evidence for an s -channel resonance Z ∗ in either the K + p or K + n system. A comparison of our data and those of other groups with theoretical predictions is given.

Test of quark model predictions in the reactions $\pi^+ p \to \omega \Delta^{++}$ and $\rho^0\Delta^{++}$ at 5 GeV/c

The well-known class-A quark-model relations of Białas and Zalewski are parametrised in a particular form, where one can compare the data with the predictions separately for the meson non-flip and flip parts, defined in the transversity frame. A 3-parameter fit to the joint decay angular distribution is performed on the experimental data, and the results are compared with the quark-model predictions for various regions of the four-momentum transfer. The effect of an s -wave state under the ρ 0 is discussed.

Five-pion final state in p p annihilations at 0.70 to 1.1 GeV/c

Results are reported on the reaction p p → π + π + π − π − π 0 at six lab momenta spanning the region from 0.686 to 1.098 GeV/ c . The cross section for this process drops from 20.3 ± 1.2 mb at 0.686 GeV/ c to 13 1.0 mb at 1.098 GeV/ c . Resonance production is determined by means of a model which includes Bose symmetrization, Breit-Wigner amplitudes and Bose-Einstein correlations for the like-charged pion pairs in the nonresonant part of the amplitude. The likelihood fit to the resonance channels yields about 0.8% ηππ , 12% ϱ ± πππ , 2% f πππ , 8% ω ππ , 22% ϱ ± ϱ 0 π , 13% ωϱ 0 and 9% ω f with errors on the order of a few percent. Several percent A 1 ± ππ and X(1440) π were also needed to obtain good fits. The ϱ 0 πππ and ϱ 0 ϱ 0 π channels as well as A 2 ππ and A 1 0 ππ are consistent with zero. Reasonable fits to the mass distributions are obtained. Production angular distributions are found to be essentially uniform. The angular correlations between pion pairs are approximately fit by the simple model of resonance production with Bose symmetrization.

Diffraction-like structure in elastic proton-proton scattering at large momentum transfers

Measurements of wide angle elastic p-p scattering between 7 and 12 GeV/c are reported. Structure found in the angular distributions is suggestive of diffraction.

Measurement of the angular dependence of the polarization of the recoil protons from the photoproduction of neutral pions on hydrogen at proton energies between 240 and 420 MeV

New measurements of the polarization of the recoil protons from the reaction γ + p → π o + p are reported for the region of the first resonance. These measurements are an extension of earlier experiments, done on the 500 MeV-electron-synchroton. More data have been taken at photon energies of 240, 300, 360 and 420 MeV.
