Inclusive photoproduction cross sections for pions, kaons and protons have been measured in the photon fragmentation region and are compared with recent electroproduction data at q 2 = 1.16 (GeV/ c ) 2 . If the cross sections are normalized to the total hadronic cross sections at q 2 = 0 and q 2 = 1.16 (GeV/ c ) 2 , respectively, we observe that more pions, about an equal number of protons, but fewer kaons are found in the photoproduction case for x ≥ 0.3.

We have measured the mean charged multiplicity n¯CH as a function of transverse momentum p⊥ of the forward proton in the reaction p+p→p+MM for five intervals of missing mass (MM) using our Multiparticle Argo Spectrometer System. We observe an increase of n¯CH for p⊥>1 GeV/c.

COMPARISON OF MUON - PROTON AND ELECTRON - PROTON INELASTIC SCATTERING

Measurements of the differential cross section for the inelastic scattering of 12-GeV/c muons on protons are reported. These measurements cover a kinematic range of |q2| (the square of the four-momentum transferred from the lepton) up to 4.0 (GeV/c)2 and of muon energy losses (ν) up to 9.0 GeV. Only the scattered muon is observed in an optical spark-chamber apparatus. The data are compared with electron-proton inelastic scattering, and analyzed in terms of possible lepton form factors and anomalous interactions. μ−p inelastic scattering is found to exhibit the same mild |q2| behavior as does e−p inelastic scattering. No experimentally significant deviation from the predictions of muon-electron universality has been found. If the ratio of muon to electron inelastic cross sections is parametrized by the form (1.0+|q2|ΛD2)−2, we find with 97.7% confidence that ΛD>4.1 GeV/c. The muon-proton cross sections on the average are slightly smaller than the electron-proton cross sections. This observation is not experimentally significant because such a difference might be caused by systematic errors, but this observation is used to speculate as to the most fruitful direction for future experiments.

Production of charged pions by 730-MeV protons from hydrogen and selected nuclei

Cochran, D.R.F. ; Dean, P.N. ; Gram, P.A.M. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 6 (1972) 3085-3116, 1972.
Inspire Record 73637 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.22253

An experiment was done in the external proton beam of the Berkeley 184-in. cyclotron to measure the production cross sections for pions from various target nuclei, from hydrogen to lead. The cross-section data are presented and the reaction mechanisms discussed. The hydrogen production appears to fit the one-pion-exchange model.

The result of a search for magnetic charged particles at 70 GeV IPHE proton synchrotron is presented. Using the ferromagnetic trap method the upper limit of the magnetic monopole production cross-section in proton-nucleon collisions was found to be α (95%) ⩾ × 10 −43 cm 2 .

Production cross sections for channels involving Ξ + particles (20.9 −3.4 +6.1 ) ub, Ξ − particles (2.3 ± 1.0) ub, Ω + particles (an upper limit of ≲ 1 ub), and other strange particle channels, are given. An Ξ + production mechanism is suggested, in terms of a double-Regge exchange model, not involving exotic trajectories. The values of the Ξ + mass (1321.6 ± 0.8) MeV/ c 2 and lifetime (1.55 ± 0.20 0.35 × 10 −10 sec are in good agreement with those of the Ξ − .

The total pair production cross-section of gamma-rays in hydrogen and deuterium

Nucl.Phys.B 45 (1972) 41-46, 1972.

The total electromagnetic cross sections of g-rays in hydrogen and deuterium have been measured over the energy range 265–4215 MeV using a photon tagging system. From these measurements, the total pair production cross sections are obtained, and the results are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of Jost, Luttinger and Slotnick.
