Final results for total cross section differences Δσ T and Δσ L measured with a polarized neutron beam transmitted through a polarized proton target are presented. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 11 energies between 0.63 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ T and at 9 energies between 0.312 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ L . The results are compared with measurements at PSI and LAMPF as well as with Δσ L data points deduced from p-d and p-p transmission experiments at the ANL-ZGS. The present results together with the corresponding pp data allow to determine two of the three imaginary parts of forward scattering amplitudes for isospin I = 0.

Absolute differential cross-section measurements for proton deuteron elastic scattering at 641.3-MeV and 792.7-MeV

Guelmez, E. ; Beedoe, S. ; Jaroszewicz, T. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.C 43 (1991) 2067-2076, 1991.
Inspire Record 323100 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26113

The absolute p-d elastic-scattering differential cross sections were measured at 641.3 and 792.7 MeV beam energies over a range of c.m. angles from ∼35° to ∼115° and ∼35° to ∼140°, respectively. The longitudinally polarized (L-type) proton beam produced by the Lamb-shift ion source at LAMPF was used. The beam intensity was measured to high accuracy (∼0.1%) by a scintillator-beam particle-counting system designed and developed prior to the experiment. Typical uncertainties in the absolute cross sections were about 2–3% total, somewhat larger at back angles. The present results were compared with the existing measurements and the controversy about the previous data at 800 MeV was resolved. The present data can be fit with a relativistic multiple-scattering theory which uses off-mass-shell extrapolations of the nucleon-nucleon amplitudes suggested by the structure of derivative meson-nucleon couplings. Relativistic-impulse-approximation calculations do not fit these data at either energy.

Characteristics of helium fragments produced in Si-28 emulsion interactions at 14.5-A-GeV

We report the measurements on partial production cross sections of the multiple helium fragments emitted in the interactions of Si28 ions at 14.5A GeV in nuclear emulsion. Interaction mean free paths of the helium fragments have been investigated on the basis of helium multiplicity and size of the target nucleus as a function of the distance from their production points. Multiplicity scaling in the produced helium fragments is also observed.

Observation of very large electromagnetic dissociation cross-sections

Hill, J.C. ; Wohn, F.K. ; Schwellenbach, D.D. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 273 (1991) 371-374, 1991.
Inspire Record 325755 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29266

An electromagnetic dissociation (ED) cross section of 3.16±0.23 b was observed for 197 Au( 238 U, X) 196 Au with 0.96 GeV/ nucleon 238 U projectiles. The gross features of ED are reproduced in a Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) calculation, but the projectile charge dependence is weaker than expected from WW. WW calculations are extended to the regime of energies of the next generation of relativistic heavy-ion colliders.

Measurement of the B* cross-section at s**(1/2) = 10.61-GeV to 10.70-GeV

Phys.Lett.B 273 (1991) 177-180, 1991.
Inspire Record 325661 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29286

Using the CUSB-II detector at CESR we have measured the B ∗ cross section in the energy range from s = 10.61–10.65 GeV and 10.70 GeV to be 0.16±0.03 nb and 0.33±0.13 nb respectively. The photon energy for B ∗ →Bγ decays is measured to be 45.4±0.8 MeV, in agreement with our earlier determination. The implication of this measurement for future B factories is discussed.

Study on fractality in nucleus-nucleus interaction at a few GeV/c

Inspire Record 325536 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29281

The scaled factorial moments, F q and fractal moments, G q have been measured and their power law variation as a function of size of the pseudorapidity interval has been studied in the central region of the pseudorapidity distribution of the produced charged particles in quasi-central and central collisions of 16 O + Ag Br at 2.1 GeV c per nucleon and 24 Mg + Ag Br at 4.5 GeV c per nucleon. The smooth spectral function f ( α q ), characterizing the fluctuation in the pseudorapidity distribution and the generalised dimensions D q have been derived from G q moments. The analyses reveal a self-similarity in multiparticle production in nucleus-nucleus interactions at an incident momentum of a few GeV/ c per nucleon. Interesting observations can be very effective in establishing multifractality in multiparticle production at this energy range.

Low mass muon pair production at high P T and low X F studied in pU, OU and SU 200 GeV per nucleon react ions. When energy density or projectile mass are increased, φ production is enhanced as compared with the yield of muon pairs in the mass continuum (1.7< M μμ < 2.4 GeV/ c 2 ), whereas the production of ω and ϱ, experimentally unresolved, remains approximately constant. This φ enhancement is in agreement with predictions based on quark-gluon plasma formation and, together with the previously reported J/Ψ suppression, puts severe constraints on a purely hadronic description of nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Inclusive inelastic scattering of 96.5-MeV pi+ and pi- by the hydrogen and helium isotopes

Phys.Rev.C 44 (1991) 24-36, 1991.
Inspire Record 323112 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26156

Spectra, angular distributions, and integrated cross sections for inclusive inelastic scattering of 96.5-MeV π+ and π− from H2, He3, and He4 are presented. The measurements were made using a high-pressure gas cell, which permits an accurate determination of relative cross sections for all targets. The data are compared with distorted-wave impulse-approximation calculations and with a modified plane-wave impulse-approximation calculation. In addition, by combining the total inelastic cross sections from this work with estimates of single-charge-exchange cross sections and with published values and reasonable estimates of the other π+ cross sections at the same energy, values for total reaction and pion absorption cross sections are obtained for all the targets. The dependence of these cross sections on Z, N, nuclear density, and nuclear binding energy is discussed in terms of a simple model.

Measurement of the tensor analyzing power T(20) in inclusive deuteron breakup at 9-GeV/c on hydrogen and carbon

Azhgirey, L.S. ; Afanasyev, S.V. ; Chernykh, E.V. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 387 (1996) 37-42, 1996.
Inspire Record 328522 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28341

The tensor analyzing power T 20 in inclusive deuteron breakup at 9 GeV/c and 0° on hydrogen and carbon targets up to internal momenta k of the proton in the deuteron of ∼ 1 GeV/c has been measured. The analyzing power remains negative up to the highest measured values of k , and is in definite disagreement with predictions from several theoretical models. A systematic difference between T 20 for deuteron breakup on hydrogen and carbon is observed.
