We have measured the rate of D ∗± meson production inside the jets produced in p p collisions at √ s = 630 GeV. For jets in the transverse energy range 15< E T <60 GeV we find a production rate of 0.10±0.04±0.03 D ∗± per jet, which is in good agreement with perturbative QCD calculations. In addition, we find that the D ∗± fragmentation distribution is strongly peaked towards low z consistent with gluon splitting as the dominant production mechanism.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed production of the charmed-strange baryon Ξ c + and its neutral isospin partner, the Ξ c 0 . The Ξ c + was reconstructed in the final state Ξ − π + π + , while the Ξ c 0 was seen in decay to Ξ − π + and Ξ − π + π + π − . The average Ξ c fragmentation spectrum has been determined, as well as the production cross section times branching ratio for each decay mode. The charged and neutral masses were measured to be 2465.1 ± 3.6 ± 1.9 MeV/ c 2 and 2472.1 ± 2.7 ± 1.6 MeV/ c 2 respectively, corresponding to a mass-splitting, M ( Ξ c + ) − M ( Ξ c 0 ), of −7.0±4.5±2.2 MeV/ c 2 .

The inclusive jet cross section at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.8 TeV has been measured at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. This measurement spans approximately 7 orders of magnitude in cross section and contains jets ranging from 30 GeV to over 400 GeV in transverse energy ($E_t$). Comparisons have been made to QCD at both order $\alpha^2_s$ and $\alpha^3_s$.

We report a measurement of the p p total cross section at √ s =1.8 TeV using a luminosity-independent method. Our result is σ T =72.1±3.3 mb ; we also derive the total elastic cross section σ el =16.6±1.6 mb. A value is obtained for the total single diffraction cross section of 11.7±2.3 mb.

The relative production ratio of 3-jet events to the total number of hadronic events was studied in e + e − annihilations at centre-of-mass energies between 54 and 61.4 GeV. The QCD scale parameter has been determined to be Λ MS =254 −47 +55 ±56 MeV on the basis of a QCD cascade with the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation.

We have studied the properties of pion production in the reaction γ →3 π + 3 π − in the energy range 1.6⩽ W γγ ⩽7.5 GeV with the CELLO detector at PETRA. We present the topological cross section both for Q 2 ≈0 (anti-tag) and Q 2 ≈0 (single-tag). The Q 2 dependence of the cross section is flatter than the GVDM prediction. The distribution of the production angle of the pions in the CMS peaks at small angles, indicating a peripheral process. In accordance with the VDM picture the p T distribution of the pions manifests an exponential fall-off. Like sign pion pairs were found to be Bose-Einstein correlated. We use this correlation to estimate the spatial dimensions of the interaction region.
