The number of charged particles inside jets is a widely used discriminant for identifying the quark or gluon nature of the initiating parton and is sensitive to both the perturbative and non-perturbative components of fragmentation. This paper presents a measurement of the average number of charged particles with $p_\text{T}>500$ MeV inside high-momentum jets in dijet events using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded with the ATLAS detector in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV collisions at the LHC. The jets considered have transverse momenta from 50 GeV up to and beyond 1.5 TeV. The reconstructed charged-particle track multiplicity distribution is unfolded to remove distortions from detector effects and the resulting charged-particle multiplicity is compared to several models. Furthermore, quark and gluon jet fractions are used to extract the average charged-particle multiplicity for quark and gluon jets separately.

Charge-dependent flow and the search for the Chiral Magnetic Wave in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV

We report on measurements of a charge-dependent flow using a novel three-particle correlator with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC, and discuss the implications for observation of local parity violation and the Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) in heavy-ion collisions. Charge-dependent flow is reported for different collision centralities as a function of the event charge asymmetry. While our results are in qualitative agreement with expectations based on the CMW, the nonzero signal observed in higher harmonics correlations indicates a possible significant background contribution. We also present results on a differential correlator, where the flow of positive and negative charges is reported as a function of the mean charge of the particles and their pseudorapidity separation. We argue that this differential correlator is better suited to distinguish the differences in positive and negative charges expected due to the CMW and the background effects, such as local charge conservation coupled with strong radial and anisotropic flow.

Study on the cross section asymmetry of deuteron photodisintegration induced by low energy polarized γ quanta

Results are presented on measured asymmetry parameter in the cross sections of the deuteron photodesintegration by linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range 40-70 MeV for the proton emission angles of 75 and 90 deg in the c. m. s. The experimental data are compared with the theoretical calculations by Partovi, Arenhovel, as well as with calculations performed within an invariant approach with gauge-invariant amplitudes in the pole approximation. The results of the calculation by Arenhovel and the present calculations satisfactorily agree with the experimental data, while the Partovi theory does not describe the asymmetry parameter measurements for photon energies above 40 MeV

We have measured parity-nonconserving optical rotation in the vicinity of the M1 absorption transition at 876 nm in bismuth. The result, R = Im(E1PNC/M1) = (-10.0 ± 1.0) centerdot 10-8, is in agreement with calculations based on the standard model of the electroweak interaction. The predicted form of the PNC rotation spectrum has been verified to high accuracy.
