Left-right Asymmetry in Inverse $\pi^-$ Photoproduction From a Transversely Polarized Proton Target

Accurate measurements of the left-right asymmetry in π−p→γn at pπ=427−625 MeV/c with a transversely polarized target are reported. Results are compared with the predictions from the Arai and Fujii single-pion photoproduction partial-wave analysis and with data on the inverse process measured with a deuterium target. The agreement is poor, casting doubt on the correctness of the value for the radiative-decay amplitude of the neutral Roper resonance now in use.

Production of the F0 Meson in the Double Pomeron Exchange Reaction $p p \to p p \pi^+ \pi^-$ at $\sqrt{s}=62$-{GeV}

Data are presented for the exclusive reaction pp → pp π+ π− at$\sqrt s= 62GeV$ with two leading protons at large Feynman-x and a centrally produced π+;π− system. In this kinematical configuration one expects a substantial contribution from Double Pomeron Exchange, which is a potential source of glueballs. The experiment was performed at the CERN ISR using the Split Field Magnet spectrometer. In the mass range between 1,000 and 1,700 MeV/c2 the invariant mass distribution for the central π+;π− system exhibits a very significant signal for thef0(1270) and no other obvious resonant states.

$K^+$ Fragmentation and Prompt Kaon Production in $K^+ P$ Collisions at 70-{GeV}/c

We present data on inclusive production ofK+ andKS0 mesons in a 70 GeV/cK+p experiment performed in BEBC filled withH2. Cross sections and inclusive Feynman-x distributions for identifiedK+'s andKS0's are presented. The spectra of “prompt” non-diffractiveKS0 are determined by subtraction of the decay products of prominent resonances and diffractive contributions. These data, contrary to the overall inclusive spectra, allow to differentiate between some fragmentation models for soft hadron-hadron interactions.
