Observation of Puzzling A-dependence of Symmetric Hadron Pairs at High $p_T$

Symmetric hadron pair production cross section (π+ π+, π+K+, π+p,K+p, andpp) were measured in the range 0.48≦P⊥≦2.29 GeV/c from Be, Cu, and Pb targets bombarded by 70 GeV protons. TheA-dependence exponent as a function ofP⊥ differs for varios pairs.A steep drop of α for meson pairs atP⊥>1.5 GeV/c is observed.

ASYMMETRY OF pi- MESON EMISSION IN NUCLEUS-NUCLEUS COLLISIONS AS A MEASURE OF THE TARGET TO PROJECTILE RATIO OF THE NUMBERS OF INTERACTING NUCLEONS

Experimental data on the forward-backward asymmetry of π- emission in (d,4He,12C)181Ta interactions atp/A=4.2 GeV/c are presented. The absolute value of the asymmetry coefficient of the inclusive π- production in the nucleon-nucleonCMS decreases asAp−0.35 with increasing atomic mass of projectile nucleus. A method of obtaining the target-to-projectile ratio of the numbers of participant nucleonsNt/Np through measuring the velocity of the symmetric pion emission system is proposed. It has been found that Nt/Np∼Ap−0.73.

Pion Scattering From C and Ca at 800-{MeV}/$c$

Results from π± elastic and inelastic scattering from C12 and Ca40 are reported. The data were all taken at an incident momentum of 800 MeV/c over an angular range from 4° to 38°. The elastic data are compared to first-order optical model calculations in momentum space; qualitative agreement is obtained. The inelastic data (from C12 only) are compared to distorted-wave Born approximation calculations, and reasonable agreement is found if realistic inelastic transition densities are used.

Antiproton helium reaction cross section has been measured at 179.6 MeV with a self shunted streamer chamber in a magnetic field. Charged prong multiplicity, branching ratios and 3 He production probability are given. Comparison with p 2 H data is performed.

Using the ARGUS detector at DORIS we have obtained evidence for a resonance which decays into an F meson and a photon. The observed mass is 2109 ± 9 ± 7 MeV, which is 144 ± 9 ± 7 MeV greater than the F meson mass. Its properties are consistent with those of the F ∗ meson with J P = 1 − .
