D Meson Production and Decay in e+ e- Annihilation at 4.03-GeV and 4.41-GeV Center-Of-Mass Energy

Decay modes of the charmed mesons, D 0 and D + , are studied in e + e − annihilation data at 4.03 and 4.41 GeV c.m. energy. The products of cross section times branching ratio are measured for the K − π + , K − π + π + π − , K S π + π − and K − π + π + final states. Upper limits are established for the Cabibbo forbidden decays via π + π − , K + K − , K + K − π + , K + π + π − and π + π − π + . The K − π + π + π − final state is shown to be dominated by K − π + ρ 0 .

Search for D0 (1865) Mesons Produced in Association with Prompt Muons in Hadronic Interactions

We present the results of a search at Fermilab for the charmed meson, D∘(1865), produced in association with a prompt muon by 300-GeV/c neutrons. We observe no significant enhancement in high-mass K±π∓ systems and report, at the 95% confidence level, an upper limit of 200 nb/nucleon for the production of a pair of charmed particles and their subsequent decay into a K±π∓ state and a prompt muon.

Study of D Mesons Produced in the Decay of the psi-prime-prime (3772)

From a study of D mesons produced in the decay ψ(3772)→DD¯, we have determined the masses of the D0 and D+ mesons to be 1863.3±0.9 MeV/c2 and 1868.3±0.9 MeV/c2, respectively. Under the assumption that the ψ(3772) has a definite isospin and decays only to DD¯, the D0 branching fractions to K−π+, K¯0π+π−, and K−π+π−π+ are (2.2±0.6)%, (4.0 ± 1.3)%, and (3.2±1.1)% and the D+ branching fractions to K¯0π+ and K−π+π+ are (1.5±0.6)% and (3.9±1.0)%.

We have searched for production of charmed mesons in the reaction π−+N→D*−+X, D*−→π−+D¯0, D¯0→K++π− at a beam momentum of 10.5 GeV/c. We measure the cross section times branching ratio to be 7±20 nb/nucleon.

Inclusive momentum and energy spectra of neutral and charged D-mesons produced in e + e − annihilation at energies near 7 GeV are presented. The slope of the energy spectrum is similar to the charged pion spectrum at the same energy. The inclusive cross section σ(e + e − → D or D + anything) at 7 GeV is 4.8±1.3 nb.

We present measurements of the cross section for inclusive D and K meson production in e + e − annihilation in the center of mass energy range 3.6 to 5.8 GeV. D production accounts for most of the increase in the total cross section for hadron production in e + e − annihilation at energies above 4 GeV.

Measurement of the Parameters of the $\psi^{\prime\prime}$(3770) Resonance

We present a measurement of the cross section for hadron production by e+e− annihilation in the vicinity of the previously observed resonance near 3.77 GeV. The data are used to determine the parameters of the ψ(3770) resonance. The values found are: mass, 3764±5 MeV/c2, total width, 23.5±5 MeV, and partial width to electron pairs, 276±50 eV.

Measurements of the Properties of d Meson Decays

We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the ψ′′(3770) resonance in e+e− annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of Kππ-decay-mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D0 decays and an apparent nonuniform population on the Dalitz plot for the D+ decay into K−π+π+. Using tagged events, we measure the charged-particle multiplicity and strange-particle content of D decays. A measurement of the D+ and D0 semileptonic decay fractions indicates that the D+ has a significantly longer lifetime than the D0.

Evidence is presented for inclusive photoproduction of F ± mesons in three decay modes, ηπ ± , ηπ ± π + π − and ηπ ± π + π + π − π − . The average mass of the F ± is found to be 2.020±0.010 GeV.

Measurement of $D^*$ Production in Pion - Nucleon Interactions at 200-{GeV}/$c$

Results are reported of an experiment to measure the cross section for production of the D*+ (D*−) in 200-GeV/c π−N interactions. We observe 78 ± 26 events corresponding to a D*-production cross section dσdy=1.6±0.5 μb at y=0.
