The photoproduction of eta-mesons from 2H and 4He has been studied for energies close to the production thresholds. The experiments were carried out with the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator. The eta-mesons were detected via their two photon decays with the electromagnetic calorimeter TAPS. Total cross sections, angular and momentum distributions of the eta-mesons have been determined for both reactions. The total cross sections in the threshold region show a large enhancement over the predictions of a participant - spectator model, indicating significant final state interaction effects. The results are compared to recent model calculations taking into account nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-eta final state interaction effects on different levels of sophistication.

SIG(Q=N) and SIG(Q=P) ratio is extracted from the data of scattering on HE4.
To determine nonspherical angular momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long ranges (low Q^2), data were taken for the p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 reaction in the Delta region at Q^2=0.060 (GeV/c)^2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W=1232 MeV are: M_{1+}^{3/2} = (40.33 +/- 0.63_{stat+syst} +/- 0.61_{model}) (10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}),Re(E_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-2.28 +/- 0.29_{stat+syst} +/- 0.20_{model})%, and Re(S_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-4.81 +/- 0.27_{stat+syst} +/- 0.26_{model})%. These disagree with predictions of constituent quark models but are in reasonable agreement with lattice calculations with non-linear (chiral) pion mass extrapolations, with chiral effective field theory, and with dynamical models with pion cloud effects. These results confirm the dominance, and general Q^2 variation, of the pionic contribution at large distances.

Differential cross sections and beam asymmetries for coherent \pi^\circ photoproduction from ^4He in the \Delta energy-range have been measured with high statistical and systematic precisions using both decay photons for identifying the process.The experiment was performed at the MAinz MIcrotron using the TAPS photon spectrometer and the Glasgow/Mainz tagged photon facility. The differential cross sections are in excellent agreement with predictions based on the DWIA if an appropriate parametrization of the \Delta-nuclear interaction is applied. The beam asymmetries are interpreted in terms of degrees of linear polarization of collimated coherent bremsstrahlung. The expected increase of the degree of linear polarization with decreasing collimation angle is confirmed. Agreement with calculations is obtained on a few-percent level of precision in the maxima of the coherent peaks.

The total neutron cross-sections were measured with high precision for hydrogen and deuterium. At an average neutron momentum of 10 GeV/c we obtained σ T (np)=39.5±0.5 mb and σ T (nd)=73.3±1.1 mb. These values are in excellent agreement with p-p and p-d total cross sections. No energy dependence was found for n-p cross section between 4 and 10 GeV/c.

Multihadron production by electron-positron colliding beams has been investigated for total centre-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. The total cross-section, σtot ≡ σ(e+e−→π+π−+ + anything), is of the order of σμμ ≡ σ(e+e−→μ+μ−), with a threshold near 1 GeV. Partial cross-sections for the various channels are also derived. The cross-section of the specific channel e+e−→π+π−π+π− exhibits an energy dependence which is suggestive of a heavier vector meson, ρ' (mρ,≈ 1.6 GeV,Гρ, ≈ 350 Mev), having the same quantum numbers as the ρ-meson. An upper limit is given for the coupling constantfρ′ (fρ′/4π<18, wherefρ′=mρ′2e/gγρ′). Final states withG+ parity are found to be much more abundant than those withG− parity. The average multiplicity (charged plus neutral final-state pions) is found to be betweet 4 and 5 over all the energy range explored.

Baryon resonance production in quasi-two-body reactions has been studied for the channels K + p→K°p π + , K + n π + and K + p π ° at beam momenta of 2.53, 2.76 and 3.20 GeV/ c . The production cross sections, four-momentum transfer distributions and density matrix elements are given for the Δ(1236), N ∗ (1400), N ∗ (1500) and N ∗ (1680) states. The reaction K + p→K° Δ ++ (1236) is compared to the line reversed reaction K − n → K °Δ − and the charge-exchange SU(3) sum rule for pseudo-scalar meson plus Δ(1236) is tested.

A bubble chamber investigation of π−+p elastic scattering at 1 200 MeV (K.E.) is reported. The total and differential cross-sections are determined. By extrapolation of the angular distribution, the 0° cross-section is derived and compared with the results obtained with the help of the dispersion relations and the optical theorem. The forward peak is investigated in terms of diffraction scattering and a value for the optical radius is derived.
