Report on the investigation of interactions in π−p collisions at a pion momentum of 1.59 GeV/c, by means of the 50 cm Saclay liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, operating in a magnetic field of 17.5 kG. The results obtained concern essentially the elastic scattering and the inelastic scattering accompanied by the production of either a single pion in π−p→ pπ−π0 and nπ−π+ interactions, or by more than one pion in four-prong events. The observed angular distribution for the elastic scattering in the diffraction region, can be approximated by an exponential law. From the extrapolated value, thus obtained for the forward scattering, one gets σel= (9.65±0.30) mb. Effective mass spectra of π−π0 and π−π+ dipions are given in case of one-pion production. Each of them exhibits the corresponding ρ− or ρ0 resonances in the region of ∼ 29μ2 (μ = mass of the charged pion). The ρ peaks are particularly conspicuous for low momentum transfer (Δ2) events. The ρ0 distribution presents a secondary peak at ∼31μ2 due probably to the ω0 → π−π+ process. The branching ratio (ω0→ π+π−)/(ω0→ π+π− 0) is estimated to be ∼ 7%. The results are fairly well interpreted in the frame of the peripheral interaction according to the one-pion exchange (OPE) model, Up to values of Δ2/μ2∼10. In particular, the ratio ρ−/ρ0 is of the order of 0.5, as predicted by this model. Furthermore, the distribution of the Treiman-Yang angle is compatible with an isotropic one inside the ρ. peak. The distribution of\(\sigma _{\pi ^ + \pi ^ - } \), as calculated by the use of the Chew-Low formula assumed to be valid in the physical region of Δ2, gives a maximum which is appreciably lower than the value of\(12\pi \tilde \lambda ^2 = 120 mb\) expected for a resonant elastic ππ scattering in a J=1 state at the peak of the ρ. However, a correcting factor to the Chew-Low formula, introduced by Selleri, gives a fairly good agreement with the expected value. Another distribution, namely the Δ2 distribution, at least for Δ2 < 10 μ2, agrees quite well with the peripheral character of the interaction involving the ρ resonance. π− angular distributions in the rest frame of the ρ exhibit a different behaviour for the ρ− and for the ρ0. Whereas the first one is symmetrical, as was already reported in a previous paper, the latter shows a clear forward π− asymmetry. The main features of the four-prong results are: 1) the occurrence of the 3/2 3/2 (ρπ+) isobar in π−p → pπ+π−π− events and 2) the possible production of the ω0→ π+π−π0 resonance in π−p→ pπ−π+π−π0 events. No ρ’s were observed in four-prong events.

pi+ proton, pi- proton and pp elastic scattering at 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c

Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.

More than 800 pion pairs have been detected. The excitation curve has been fitted with a Breit-Wigner formula which leads to the following values: σ peak = (1.69 ± 0.21) 10 −30 cm 2 ; m ϱ = (770 ± 4) MeV ; Γ ϱ = (111 ± 6) MeV . The partial width of the ϱ o going into e + e − thus obtained is: Γ ϱ → e + e − =(7.36±0.7) keV .

At 3 GeV/ c , the total and differential cross sections of the reactions K − n → Y π − have been determined for nine S = −1 baryonic states. Backward peaks associated with a dip near u = −0.2 are observed in many cases. They have been interpreted, for the isospin-zero Y-states, in terms of a proton-exchange mechanism. The backward peaks in the reactions K − n → Λπ − and K − n → Σ o π − have been more quantitatively related to the backward π N → N π differential cross sections at the same energy. This comparison leads to the conclusion, that the first reaction is dominated by nucleon exchange, whereas the second one requires a more complex exchange mechanism.

Differential cross sections and polarizations have been measured for the reaction π − p → K 0 Λ and π − p → K 0 Σ 0 at 3.9 GeV/ c π − momentum. Comparison of these data with those of the related reactions K − n → π − Λ and K − p → π − Σ + (at approximately the same c.m. energy) indicate that simple Regge-pole models involving only K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) exchange are unable to describe all the features of the data. On the other hand, comparison of the π − p → K 0 Σ 0 data with that of π + p → K + Σ + shows that the data are consistent with absence of exotic strange-meson exchange.

Small angle elastic scattering events have been observed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Directions of both particles as well as the collision vertex are reconstructed with the help of four sets of spark chambers, two for each of the two arms. Bubble Chamber Study of Photoproduction by 2.8-GeV and 4.7-GeV Polarized Photons. 1. Cross-Section Determinations and Production of rho0 and Delta++ in the Reaction gamma p --> p pi+ pi-

Photoproduction is studied at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV using a linearly polarized monoenergetic photon beam in a hydrogen bubble chamber. We discuss the experimental procedure, the determination of channel cross sections, and the analysis of the channel γp→pπ+π−. A model-independent analysis of the ρ0-decay angular distribution allows us to measure nine independent density-matrix elements. From these we find that the reaction γp→pρ0 proceeds almost completely through natural parity exchange for squared momentum transfers |t|<1 GeV2 and that the ρ production mechanism is consistent with s-channel c.m. helicity conservation for |t|<0.4 GeV2. A cross section for the production of π+π− pairs in the s-channel c.m. helicity-conserving p-wave state is determined. The ρ mass shape is studied as a function of momentum transfer and is found to be inconsistent with a t-independent Ross-Stodolsky factor. Using a t-dependent parametrization of the ρ0 mass shape we derive a phenomenological ρ0 cross section. We compare our phenomenological ρ0 cross section with other experiments and find good agreement for 0.05<|t|<1 GeV2. We discuss the discrepancies in the various determinations of the forward differential cross section. We study models for ρ0 photoproduction and find that the Söding model best describes the data. Using the Söding model we determine a ρ0 cross section. We determine cross sections and nine density-matrix elements for γp→Δ++π−. The parity asymmetry for Δ++ production is incompatible with simple one-pion exchange. We compare Δ++ production with models.

Final results for 3678 six-prong π+p events at 8 GeV/c are presented. Single-particle distributions are compared with the predictions of the Chan-Loskiewicz-Allison model and the phenomenological model of the F(t) function. Differences between the transverse momenta of the π+ and π− and between the transverse momenta of secondaries emitted forward and backward in the c.m. system are observed. Cross sections for production of the ρ0, ρ+, ρ−, η, ω0, X0, and D0 mesons and the N33*++ and N33*− isobars are given, together with upper limits for some other resonances. The D0 meson is observed in the seven-body channel in the ηπ+π− system, with some evidence for the cascade decay D0→δ±π∓→ηπ+π−. The branching ratio (f0→2π+2π−)(f0→2π) is determined to be (2.2−2.2+4.5)%. Upper limits for the decay of A mesons into X0π systems are quoted. The cross section for the two-body reaction π+p→N33*++X0 is determined to be 30 ± 13 μb, from which the η0−X0 mixing angle is derived. Associated production of N33*++ and ρ0 in the six-body channel and of N33*++, ρ0, and ω0 in the seven-body channel is studied, and the cross sections for reactions involving simultaneous production of these resonances are estimated. The Goldhaber-Goldhaber-Lee-Pais effect is studied and shown to be strong in the six-body channel, especially for selected events with low energy of the pion system.

Assuming a π + π − π 0 π 0 production by the quasi two-body process e + e − → ϱ → ωπ 0 we give the correspondi ng cross section σ (e + e − → π + π − π 0 π 0 ) = (1.1 ± 0.5) 10 −32 cm 2 . Since no events with 3 and 4 charged pions have been observed σ (e + e − → π + π − π 0 π − ) ⩽ 1.5 × 10 −33 cm 2 .

The Λp, Λn, Λ p, and Λ n total cross-sections were measured in the Λ momentum interval 6–21 GeV/ c . Within the experimental uncertainties the cross-sections are momentum-independent in this interval and the momentum-averaged cross-sections are found to be: σ ( Λp ) = 34.6 ± 0.4 mb : σ ( Λn ) = 34.0 ± 0.8 mb ; σ ( Λp ) = 56 ± 11 mb ; σ ( Λn ) = 46 ± 20 mb . The first two results are in agreement with charge symmetry, and with simple quark model sum rules applied to previous results on pp, K - n, and π + p total cross-sections.

A large solid angle detector has been used to observe two body events produced by electron-positron collisions in the Orsay storage ring. From the π + π − excitation curve in the ϱ region we have deduced the amplitude and the phase of the ω-ϱ interference, and the ϱ resonance paramaters: M ϱ = (775.4±7.3) MeV, Γ ϱ = (149.6 ± 23.2) MeV, √ B ( ω → π + π − ) = 0.19 ± 0.05, φ = (85.7 ± 15.3) 0 , σ ( e + e − → ϱ ) = (1.00 ± 0.13) μ b at S = M ϱ 2 , B ( ϱ → e + e − = (4.1 ± 0.5) × 10 −5 , Γ ( ϱ → e + e − ) = (6.1 ± 0.7) keV, ( g ϱ 2 /4 π ) = 2.26 ± 0.25, ( g ϱππ 2 /4 π ) = 2.84 ± 0.50.

A study is made of η 0 production in p p → 3π + 3π − π 0 (7500 events) at an incident momentum of 720 MeV/ c . The reaction is dominated by production of ω 0 (≈68 o/o). The η o production has been studied by means of two independent methods: the first, a study of correlations between the (4 π ) ± and (5 π ) 0 and the (3 π ) 0 systems, circumvents the problem of ω 0 reflections. The second attempts to isolate the η 0 4π channel by means of rigorous selections using the decay properties of η 0 and ω 0 . The results of the two methods are consistent and confirnm the production of σ +- , D 0 and E 0 with the decays ifD 0 → σ ± π ± → η 0 π + π ( su −), E 0 → σ ± π ∓ → η ( su 0) π + π − , E 0 → η 0 π + π − .

As a partial result of an analysis of K + d interactions at 3 GeV/ c produced in the 81 cm Saclay bubble chamber, we present data on K + differential cross sections for the following reactions: K + d → K + d, K + d → K + pn, K + d → K 0 pp . A set of parameters describing the K + n elastic scattering has been obtained from a simulataneous fit, based on the Glauber model. to the three experimental differential cross sections and to the K + d total cross section, giving α n = 1.7 ± 0.5 GeV −2 for the slope α n of the differential cross section, and ρ n = −0.16 ± 0.3 for the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude. The D-wave function of the deuteron has been found to give a non-negligible contribution to the coherent reaction.

The non-strange four-prong events of π + p interactions at 3.5 GeV/ c are studied. Cross sections are calculated for all resonance productions in the channels π + p → p π + π + π − ( σ T = 3.18 ± 0.13 mb) and π + p → p π + π + π − π o ( σ T = 4.03 ± 0.16 mb). The dominant two body reactions Δ ++ ϱ o and Δ ++ ω o are investigated in detail, and production and decay distributions are presented as well as joint decay density matrix elements and joint correlation terms. The Δ ++ ϱ o reaction is compared to predictions of OPE with absorption and the Δ ++ ω o is compared to rho-exchange with sharp cutoff.

Vector Meson Production by Polarized Photons at 2.8-GeV, 4.7-GeV, and 9.3-GeV

We present results on vector-meson photoproduction via γp→Vp in the LBL-SLAC 82-in. hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a linearly polarized photon beam at 2.8, 4.7, and 9.3 GeV. We find ρ0 production to have the characteristics of a diffractive process, i.e., a cross section decreasing slowly with energy and a differential cross section with slope of ∼ 6.5 GeV−2. Within errors the ρ0 production amplitudes are entirely due to natural-parity exchange. s-channel helicity is conserved to a high degree in the γ→ρ0 transition. We find evidence for small helicity-flip amplitudes for ππ pairs in the ρ0 region. Photoproduction of ω mesons is separated into its natural- (σN) and unnatural- (σU) parity-exchange contributions. The Eγ and t dependence and the spin density matrix of the unnatural-parity-exchange contribution are consistent with a one-pion-exchange process. The natural-parity-exchange part has characteristics similar to ρ0 production. At 9.3 GeV the ratio of σ(ρ0) to σN(ω) is ∼ 7. The slope of the φ differential cross section is ∼ 4.5 GeV−2, smaller than that of ρ0 and ω production. Natural-parity exchange is the main contributor to φ production. No evidence for higher-mass vector mesons is found in ππ, πππ, or KK¯ final states. The s and t dependences of Compton scattering as calculated from ρ, ω, and φ photoproduction using vector-meson dominance agree with experiment, but the predicted Compton cross section is too small by a factor of 2.

The results are based on an analysis of approximately 22 600 events of the two reactions where the π+ and π− from the decay of the KS0 were detected in the forward leg of the Double Vee Magnetic Spectrometer. The separation of Λ recoils from Σ0 recoils was accomplished by the missing-mass technique.

In an experiment with the CERN 2m deuterium bubble chamber the reaction K + d→K o pp (1) and the related reaction K + n→K o p (2) are studied at an incident momentum of 4.6 GeV/ c . The cross section for the latter reaction is found to be slightly larger than the cross section for the reaction K − p → K o n at the same energy. The corresponding differential cross sections agree within the rather large uncertainties. The forward amplitude for reaction (2) is predominantly real. Moreover, the total and forward differential charge exchange cross section values are compatible with those predicted on the basis of an SU (3) sum rule. A comparison of the K ± -charge exchange differential cross sections with the predictions of a Regge pole model is also presented.

A study of pp interactions at an incident momentum of 16.2 GeV/ c leading to two-prong non-strange final states was carried out in an exposure of the 2m CERN hydrogen bubble chamber. The c.m. angle and momentum distributions for the outgoing particles in the final states pn π + and pp π 0 are presented and discussed. These final states were analysed in terms of quasi two-body final states - N(Nπ), with the pion-nucleon system in an I = 1 2 or I = 3 2 state. A determination of these two isospin amplitudes and their interference term is then carried out. The reaction pp → pn π + is found to be well described by a Reggeized exchange model, as well as by a double Regge-exchange model.
