The elastic scattering of K+ mesons on protons is studied at 3.5 and 5 GeV/c. The total elastic cross-sections are found to be (4.36±0.36) mb and (3.82±0.41) mb respectively. The differential elastic cross-sections, which exhibit characteristic diffraction peaks, are fitted by dσ/dt=(dσ/dt)0eαt, giving α=(3.85±0.12) and (4.70±0.21) (GeV/c)−2 for the two momenta respectively, with |t|⪝0.65 (GeV/c)2. The results are compared to those at neighbouring energies, giving some support to the presence of a real part of the forward scattering amplitude. The diffraction peak shows definite shrinking with increasing momenta. The data are examined in the light of models for high-energy scattering.

The transmission regeneration amplitude after a thick copper block has been measured. The quantity {∣ƒ(0)- overlineƒ(0)∣ }/{k} varies from 20.0 $\pm$ 1.4 mb at 2.75 GeV/c to 13.6 $\pm$ 1.2 mb at 7.25 GeV/c. Results are in agreement with optical model calculations in which real and imaginary parts of the amplitudes for single nucleon scattering are determined from forward dispersion relations and total cross-sections.

Over 100 unambiguous π − + p → Λ + Λ + n events have been observed in a magnet spark chamber. The data provide good evidence for peripheral production of Λ Λ and n Λ (via meson exchange) and against peripheral n Λ (double baryon exchange). No resonances in the Λ Λ system are observed. Angular distributions and Λ( Λ ) polarizations are analysed.

This article reports the results of a spark-chamber measurement of the reactions K−+p→K¯0+neutrals and K−+p→Λ0+neutrals with an incident kaon momentum of 7.7 GeV/c. The cross-section distributions d2σdPIIdP⊥ in the center-of-mass system with large momentum transfer are discussed in terms of a fireball model of production.

Cross sections for the reactions γp→K+Λ and γp→K+Σ0 have been measured at squared four-momentum transfer (−t) from 0.005 to 2 GeV2, at photon energies 5, 8, 11, and 16 GeV. For −t>0.2 GeV2 each of the K+ cross sections is about ⅓ of the π+n photoproduction cross section, having nearly the same energy and momentum-transfer dependence. The K+ cross sections fall off at small |t|, however, in contrast to the sharp forward spike seen in π+n; this leads to a disagreement with an SU(3) prediction for −t<0.1 GeV2. The ratio of K+Σ0 to K+Λ cross sections is typically between 0.5 and 1.0.

The interference between K L → π + π - and K S → π + π - behind a copper regenerator has been observed in a high statistics experiment. The modulus and the argument of the complex ratio ϱ ( p )/ η +- , where ϱ ( p ) is the regeneration amplitude and η +- = A ( K L → π + π - )/ A (K S → π + π - ) has been measured over the momentum interval from 2.0 GeV/ c to 6.0 GeV/ c . The phase of η +- as deduced from this measurement and from the optical model value of arg [ ϱ ( p )] is 49.3° ± 6.8°. The K L K S mass difference has been found to be Δm/ h ̵ = (0.555 ± 0.020) × 10 10 sec −1 .

The reactions γA→π±A* have been studied at four-momentum transfers −t<~0.5 GeV2 for seven elements ranging from hydrogen to lead. Exclusion-principle suppression is clearly visible at small-momentum transfer. Neither the A dependence nor the energy dependence of the cross sections agrees with the predictions of the vector-dominance model. The ratio of π−π+ production requires equal spatial distributions for the protons and neutrons in nuclei. Some K+ data are also presented.

A systematic search for exotic states produced in K − d interactions at 3 GeV/ c is reported. From the analysis of the mass spectra of strange mesons, non-strange mesons, hyperons with S = −1 and S = −2, upper limits for the production cross sections of exotic resonances may be placed at one or two orders of magnitude smaller than for the production of normal resonances of same strangeness and baryon number.

Elastic and inelastic K L S regenerative scattering on copper and lead nuclei have been observed up to a momentum transfer of 0.17 GeV/ c . The elastic differential cross-section is of a ”diffractive” type. It can be described successfully in terms of an optical model only assuming an appreciable neutron excess in the vicinity of the nuclear surface.

Polarization of Λ hyperons and differential cross sections for the reaction γ+p→K++Λ were measured at the K+-meson center-of-mass angles around 45°, 70°, and 90° for the incident photon energies of 1054, 1100, and 1160 MeV. The K+ mesons were detected with a magnetic spectrometer and a velocity-selection system based on the energy loss and the time of flight. The polarization of Λ was determined by measuring the up-down asymmetry of protons in the decay Λ→pπ− with respect to the production plane. The results show a dominant sinθK* dependence of the polarization at the region of the third resonance and are consistent with a contribution of the P11 resonance with a mass of about 1700 MeV.

We have measured the asymmetry of the cross section for γp→π+n from a polarized target at 5 and 16 GeV. The range of four-momentum transfer was 0.02<~−t<~1.0 GeV2. The π+ mesons were produced in a polarized butanol target and detected with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 20−GeVc spectrometer. A sizable asymmetry was found at both 5 and 16 GeV, a typical value being -0.6 near −t=0.3 GeV2. A small amount of data on the asymmetry of other photoproduction processes was also obtained.

Using an 11-GeV bremsstrahlung beam and the SLAC 20-GeV spectrometer, we have measured K + missing mass spectra from hydrogen and deuterium at five angles with momentum transfer squared ranging from 0.025 to 0.46 GeV 2 . Steps in the spectra as a function of missing mass were found corresponding to production of Λ , Σ , Σ 1385 + Λ 1405 and Λ 1520 . The ratio Σ − and Σ 0 production is not consistent with pure isotopic spin 1 2 in the t -channel for the reaction γ N→K + Σ . At 3 GeV/ c , the total and differential cross sections of the reactions K − n → Y π − have been determined for nine S = −1 baryonic states. Backward peaks associated with a dip near u = −0.2 are observed in many cases. They have been interpreted, for the isospin-zero Y-states, in terms of a proton-exchange mechanism. The backward peaks in the reactions K − n → Λπ − and K − n → Σ o π − have been more quantitatively related to the backward π N → N π differential cross sections at the same energy. This comparison leads to the conclusion, that the first reaction is dominated by nucleon exchange, whereas the second one requires a more complex exchange mechanism.

Results are reported on K − -neutron interactions at c.m. energies near 2 GeV. The interactions are dominated by strong production of hyperon resonances, particularly Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520). Production cross sections and angular distributions are given for the Σ(1385), Λ(1405) and Λ(1520) and branching fractions to decay modes observed in the experiment are given for Σ(1385) and Λ(1520). Total and differential cross sections are presented for the reactions K − p → K − p and K − p → K o n at 13 points in the c.m. energy range 1915–2168 MeV. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis is carried out on these data together with the polarisation measurements of Daum et al. [1] and the total cross section measurements [2] within this energy range. The well known Σ(1915), Σ(2030) and Λ(2100) are observed and their resonance parameters measured. Structure is also found in the D 05 and F 07 waves. An SU(3) analysis of the 5 2 + octet, 7 2 + decuplet and 7 2 − singlet gives generally good agreement between theory and experiment except that the elasticity of the Σ(1915) is experimentally rather larger than predicted.

Two alternative spin-parity assignments 2 + and 3 − for the K ∗ resonance have been considered and a comparison with the quark-model predictions has been made. We report on coherent interactions in a 2.5 event/μb K − d exposure. The predominant channel studied is K − d → K − π + gp − d (415 events). We find strong Q- and L-production in the (K ππ ) system. The production mechanism determines I = 1 2 for both enhancements and a spin-parity in the series 0 − , 1 + ,2 − … . A spin-parity analysis shows the Q to be a 1 + object, while the L is 1 + or 2 − , although a higher spin cannot be excluded. The cross sections for Q and L production and other final states are presented.

The elastic scattering of K ± mesons on protons has been studied at 5 GeV/c. A total of about 500 000 events have been measured in the c.m. angular range 17° < θ cm < 165° corresponding to 0.2 < − t < (GeV/ c ) 2 . We observed a K − p backward peak which we have parametrized as d σ /d u = (0.6 ± 0.2) exp [(3.3 ± 0.6) u ] μb /(GeV/c) 2 , while for the K + p backward peak we find d σ /d u = (17.5 ± 1) exp [(3.6 ± 0.2) u ] μb /(GeV/c) 2 . The K − p cross-section falls to about 0.03 μ b ( GeV /c) 2 around − t = 5 (GeV/ c ) 2 , while the K + p cross-section stays in the vicinity of 0.3 μ b ( GeV /c) 2 in the same t -region. We have measured the cross sections for these reactions and the cross sections of resonances produced in them. The production of Y ∗± (1385) , ϱ o (765), and f o (1260) is observed in the first reaction; ϱ o (765) in the second; Y ∗−,o (1385), ω o (748), B − (1235), probably ϱ o,− (765), and an enhancement we interpret to be the J P = 1 2 − Σ o (1750) in the third. Single particle longitudinal momentum distributions and average values of transverse momentum are presented. The observed single particle production angular distributions show good qualitative but not quantitative agreement with the Reggeized multiperipheral model of Chan, Loskiewicz, and Allison. We found strong disagreement between the amounts of observed resonance production and the results of the multiperipheral model of Plahte and Roberts that is based on the models of Chan et al. and Veneziano. However, we included isospin effects only in an approximate manner.

Resonance production in the above reactions containing a proton in the final state is characterized primarily by the production of K ∗− (890). The events with a final state neutron are characterized by the production of either K ∗− (890) or Δ − (1236), but very little double resonance production. Cross sections are presented. Exponential slopes for the momentum-transfer distributions of the K ∗− (890) and Δ − (1236) were determined and found to be much smaller than for elastic scattering. For the π − π − p K 0 events the spin density matrix elements for the decay of the K ∗− (890) in the Jackson frame imply alignment. Single particle longitudinal momentum distributions and average values of transverse momentum are presented. The single particle production angular distributions of all three reactions were compared with the results of the Reggeized multiperipheral model of Chan, Loskiewicz, and Allison (CLA) modified to include resonance production. Good qualitative agreement was found. The data from the π − π − p K 0 events were also compared with a multiperipheral model of Plahte and Roberts that is based on the CLA and Veneziano models.

Polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is also reported at 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c.
