Observation of nuclear modifications in W$^\pm$ boson production in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 8.16 TeV

The production of W$^\pm$ bosons is studied in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 8.16 TeV. Measurements are performed in the W$^\pm \to \mu^\pm\nu_\mu$ channel using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 173.4 $\pm$ 8.7 nb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC. The number of positively and negatively charged W bosons is determined separately in the muon pseudorapidity region in the laboratory frame $|\eta^\mu_\mathrm{lab}| <$ 2.4 and transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}^\mu >$ 25 GeV/$c$. The W$^\pm$ boson differential cross sections, muon charge asymmetry, and the ratios of W$^\pm$ boson yields for the proton-going over the Pb-going beam directions are reported as a function of the muon pseudorapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame. The measurements are compared to the predictions from theoretical calculations based on parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-leading-order. The results favour PDF calculations that include nuclear modifications and provide constraints on the nuclear PDF global fits.

Measurements are presented of Wγγ and Zγγ production in proton-proton collisions. Fiducial cross sections are reported based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Signal is identified through the W → ℓν and Z → ℓℓ decay modes, where ℓ is a muon or an electron. The production of Wγγ and Zγγ, measured with significances of 2.6 and 5.9 standard deviations, respectively, is consistent with standard model predictions. In addition, limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in Wγγ production are determined in the context of a dimension-8 effective field theory.

The production cross section of a W boson in association with two b jets is measured using a sample of proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} = $ 8 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.8 fb$^{-1}$. The W bosons are reconstructed via their leptonic decays, $ \mathrm{ W }\to\ell\nu $, where $\ell=\mu$ or $\mathrm{ e }$. The fiducial region studied contains exactly one lepton with transverse momentum $ p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\ell} > $ 30 GeV and pseudorapidity $ | {\eta^{\ell}} | < $ 2.1, with exactly two b jets with $ p_{\mathrm{T}} > $ 25 GeV and $ | {\eta} | < $ 2.4 and no other jets with $ p_{\mathrm{T}} > $ 25 GeV and $ | {\eta} | < $ 4.7. The cross section is measured to be $ \sigma ( {{\mathrm{ p }\mathrm{ p }}} \to {\mathrm{ W }} (\ell\nu) + \mathrm{ b \bar{b} }) =$ 0.64 $\pm$ 0.03 (stat) $\pm$ 0.10 (syst) $\pm$ 0.06 (theory) $\pm$ 0.02 (lumi) pb, in agreement with standard model predictions.

A search for exclusive or quasi-exclusive γγ → W$^{+}$ W$^{−}$ production, via pp → p$^{(*)}$ W$^{+}$ W$^{−}$ p$^{(*)}$ → p$^{(*)}$ μ$^{±}$e$^{∓}$ p$^{(*)}$ at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV, is reported using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{−1}$. Events are selected by requiring the presence of an electron-muon pair with large transverse momentum p$_{T}$(μ$^{±}$e$^{∓}$) > 30 GeV, and no associated charged particles detected from the same vertex. The 8 TeV results are combined with the previous 7 TeV results (obtained for 5.05 fb$^{−1}$ of data). In the signal region, 13 (2) events are observed over an expected background of 3.9 ± 0.6 (0.84 ± 0.15) events for 8 (7) TeV, resulting in a combined excess of 3.4σ over the background-only hypothesis. The observed yields and kinematic distributions are compatible with the standard model prediction for exclusive and quasi-exclusive γγ → W$^{+}$ W$^{−}$ production. Upper limits on the anomalous quartic gauge coupling operators a$_{0,C}^{W}$ (dimension-6) and f$_{M0,1,2,3}$ (dimension-8), the most stringent to date, are derived from the measured dilepton transverse momentum spectrum.

Search for a Higgs Boson in the Mass Range from 145 to 1000 GeV Decaying to a Pair of W or Z Bosons

A search for a heavy Higgs boson in the $\mathrm{H \to WW}$ and $\mathrm{H \to ZZ}$ decay channels is reported. The search is based upon proton-proton collision data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 5.1 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and up to 19.7 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Several final states of the $\mathrm{H \to WW}$ and $\mathrm{H \to ZZ}$ decays are analyzed. The combined upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction exclude a Higgs boson with standard model-like couplings and decays in the $m_{\mathrm{H}}$ range from 145 to 1000 GeV. We also interpret the results in the context of an electroweak singlet extension of the standard model.

Measurements of the fiducial cross-section are presented along with results that quantify for the first time the underlying correlations in the predicted and measured cross-sections due to proton parton distribution functions. These results indicate that the correlated next-to-leading-order predictions for <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mover accent="true"><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo accent="true" stretchy="false">¯</mml:mo></mml:mover></mml:math></inline-formula> and <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mi>Z</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">/</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mi>γ</mml:mi><mml:mo>*</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mo stretchy="false">→</mml:mo><mml:mi>τ</mml:mi><mml:mi>τ</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> underestimate the data, while those at next-to-next-to-leading-order generally describe the data well. A search for resonant $WZ$ production in the $\ell\nu\ell'\ell'$ ($\ell, \ell' = e,\mu$) decay channel using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at LHC is presented. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed and upper limits on the production cross sections of $WZ$ resonances from an extended gauge model $W^{\prime}$ and from a simplified model of heavy vector triplets are derived. A corresponding observed (expected) lower mass limit of 1.52 (1.49) TeV is derived for the $W^{\prime}$ at the 95% confidence level.

The W + prompt J/psi to inclusive W production cross-section ratio (times 10^6) in the J/psi fiducial region (Fiducial), after correction for J/psi acceptance (Inclusive), and after subtraction of the double parton scattering component (DPS-subtracted). The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third/fourth (where applicable) is the uncertainty up/down due to spin-alignment.

The inclusive (SPS+DPS) cross-section ratio (times 10^6) as a function of J/psi transverse momentum, along with the estimate of the DPS contribution. For the inclusive result, the first uncertainty is statistical, second uncertainty is systematic, and the third uncertainty is the possible variation due to spin-alignment.

A search is presented for dark matter pair production in association with a W or Z boson in pp collisions representing 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at $\sqrt{s}$=8 TeV using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with a hadronic jet with the jet-mass consistent with a W or Z boson, and with large missing transverse momentum are analyzed. The data are consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and limits are set on the mass scale in effective field theories that describe the interaction of dark matter and Standard Model particles.

A study of WZ production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb^-1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. In total, 317 candidates, with a background expectation of 68+/-10 events, are observed in double-leptonic decay final states with electrons, muons and missing transverse momentum. The total cross-section is determined to be sigma_WZ(tot) = 19.0+1.4/-1.3(stat.)+/-0.9(syst.)+/-0.4(lumi.) pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 17.6+1.1/-1.0 pb. Limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are derived using the transverse momentum spectrum of Z bosons in the selected events. The cross section is also presented as a function of Z boson transverse momentum and diboson invariant mass.

A measurement of the ratio of the $W$ and $Z$ cross sections with exactly one associated jet in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV with ATLAS

The ratio of production cross sections of the W and Z bosons with exactly one associated jet is presented as a function of jet transverse momentum threshold. The measurement has been designed to maximise cancellation of experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and is reported both within a particle-level kinematic range corresponding to the detector acceptance and as a total cross-section ratio. Results are obtained with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1. The results are compared with perturbative leading-order, leading-log, and next-to-leading-order QCD predictions, and are found to agree within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The ratio is measured for events with a single jet with p_T > 30 GeV to be 8.73 +/- 0.30 (stat) +/- 0.40 (syst) in the electron channel, and $ 8.49 +/- 0.23 (stat) +/- 0.33 (syst) in the muon channel.
