Using the CLEO III detector, we measure absolute cross sections for e+e- --> hadrons at seven center-of-mass energies between 6.964 and 10.538 GeV. The values of R, the ratio of hadronic and muon pair production cross sections, are determined within 2% total r.m.s. uncertainty.

We have measured the charge asymmetry in like-sign dilepton yields from B^0 B^0-bar meson decays using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find a_ll = [N(l+l+) - N(l-l-)]/[N(l+l+) + N[l-l-)] = +0.013 +/- 0.050 +/- 0.005 . We combine this result with a previous, independent measurement and obtain Re(epsilon_B)/(1+|epsilon_B|^2) = +0.0035 +/- 0.0103 +/- 0.0015 (uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively) for the CP impurity parameter, epsilon_B.

Using 13.6/fb of continuum two-jet e+e- -> ccbar events collected with the CLEO detector, we have searched for baryon number correlations at the primary quark level. We have measured the likelihood for a /\c+ charmed baryon to be produced in the hemisphere opposite a /\c- relative to the likelihood for a /\c+ charmed baryon to be produced opposite an anticharmed meson Dbar; in all cases, the reconstructed hadrons must have momentum greater than 2.3 GeV/c. We find that, given a /\c- (reconstructed in five different decay modes), a /\c+ is observed in the opposite hemisphere (0.72+/-0.11)% of the time (not corrected for efficiency). By contrast, given a Dbar in one hemisphere, a /\c+ is observed in the opposite hemisphere only (0.21+/-0.02)% of the time. Normalized to the total number of either /\c- or Dbar ``tags'', it is therefore 3.52+/-0.45+/-0.42 times more likely to find a /\c+ opposite a /\c- than a Dbar meson. This enhancement is not observed in the JETSET 7.3 e+e- -> ccbar Monte Carlo simulation.

The /\c->pKpi yield has been measured in a sample of two-jet continuum events containing a both an anticharm tag (Dbar) as well as an antiproton (e+e- -> Dbar pbar X), with the antiproton in the hemisphere opposite the Dbar. Under the hypothesis that such selection criteria tag e+e- -> Dbar pbar (/\c) X events, the /\c->pkpi branching fraction can be determined by measuring the pkpi yield in the same hemisphere as the antiprotons in our Dbar pbar X sample. Combining our results from three independent types of anticharm tags, we obtain B(/\c->pKpi)=(5.0+/-0.5+/-1.2)%

We have used the CLEO II detector to study the multiplicity of charged particles in the decays of B mesons produced at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. Using a sample of 1.5 x 10^6 B meson pairs, we find the mean inclusive charged particle multiplicity to be 10.71 +- 0.02 +0.21/-0.15 for the decay of the pair. This corresponds to a mean multiplicity of 5.36 +- 0.01 +0.11/-0.08 for a single B meson. Using the same data sample, we have also extracted the mean multiplicities in semileptonic and nonleptonic decays. We measure a mean of 7.82 +- 0.05 +0.21/-0.19 charged particles per $B\bar{B}$ decay when both mesons decay semileptonically. When neither B meson decays semileptonically, we measure a mean charged particle multiplicity of 11.62 +- 0.04 +0.24/-0.18 per $B\bar{B}$ pair.

We report results from two new methods for measuring the total production of charmed particles in nonresonant e+e− annihilations at √s =10.5 GeV. The rate for detection of events containing two reconstructed charmed mesons relative to that for events containing one is used to extract information about total charm production independent of decay branching fractions. The value of ΔRcc¯, the total charm-pair cross section normalized to the pointlike μ-pair cross section, is found to be 1.13−0.13+0.17±0.09, under an assumption of limited particle correlations. In an independent analysis the inclusive cross section for e+e−→qq¯→e±X is measured to be 0.293±0.017±0.017 nb. Using measured relative production rates and semileptonic branching fractions of D0 and D+ mesons and estimates of these quantities for Ds and Λc, this is found to correspond to ΔRcc¯=2.07±0.12±0.26. These two measurements are discussed in the context of measurements made by reconstruction of exclusive hadronic decay modes and of theoretical expectations.

We report results on the differential and total cross sections for inclusive production of the charmed particles D*+, D*0, D0, D+, Ds, and Λc in e+e− annihilations at √s=10.55 GeV. Widely used quark fragmentation models are discussed and compared with the measured charmed-particle momentum distributions. This comparison, as well as that with measurements at other center-of-mass energies, shows the need to take QCD corrections into account and their importance for a correct interpretation of the model parameters. The observed rate of D0 and D+ production is compared to the expected total charm production cross section. We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle correlations in decays of the Υ(1S) resonance and in nonresonant annihilations of electrons and positrons at center-of-mass energy 10.49 GeV, just below BB¯ threshold. These data were obtained using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and provide information on the production of π, K, ρ, K*, φ, p, Λ, and Ξ in quark and gluon jets. The average multiplicity of hadrons per event for upsilon decays (compared with continuum annihilations) is 11.4 (10.5) pions, 2.4 (2.2) kaons, 0.6 (0.5) ρ0, 1.2 (0.8) K*, 0.6 (0.4) protons and antiprotons, 0.15 (0.08) φ, 0.19 (0.07) Λ and Λ¯, and 0.016 (0.005) Ξ− and Ξ¯ +. We have also seen evidence for η and f0 production. The most significant differences between upsilon and continuum final states are (1) the inclusive energy spectra fall off more rapidly with increasing particle energy in upsilon decays, (2) the production of heavier particles, especially baryons, is not as strongly suppressed in upsilon decays, and (3) baryon and antibaryon are more likely to be correlated at long range in upsilon decay than in continuum events.

A measurement is presented of the inclusive production of charged D* and neutral D mesons from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the energy region near the ϒ(4S) resonance. The momentum distribution shows a large contribution at high momenta as expected for heavy quark production. Comparison of the spectrum with several phenomenological models is made. The relative yields of the D* and D mesons indicate that the charm cross section is dominated by the D* contribution.

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, the authors have measured the leptonic branching fractions, Bμμ, of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) to be 2.7±0.3±0.3%, 1.9±1.3±0.5%, and 3.3±1.3±0.7%, respectively. Combining these values of Bμμ with previous measurements of the leptonic widths of these resonances, the authors find the total widths of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) to be 48±4±4, 27±17±6, and 13±4±3 keV.

A measurement is presented of inclusive charged D*(2010) production from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy (W) range 10.2 GeV<W<10.6 GeV. Charged D* mesons are identified by the decays D*+→D0π+→K−π+π+ and the charge conjugate mode. It is found that 40 ± 7 ± 13% of the charm quarks from the process e+e−→cc¯ result in D* mesons with z>0.7 (z=2EW, where E is the D* energy).

The charged multiplicity has been measured at the ϒ(4S) and a value of 5.75±0.1±0.2 has been obtained for the mean charged multiplicity in B-meson decay. Combining this result with the measurement of prompt leptons from B decay, the values 4.1±0.35±0.2 and 6.3±0.2±0.2 are found for the semileptonic and nonleptonic charged multiplicities, respectively. If b→c dominance is assumed for the weak decay of the B meson, then the semileptonic multiplicity is consistent with the recoil mass determined from the lepton momentum spectrum.
