We present data on inclusive and semi-inclusive ϱ 0 production in 147 GeV/ c π − p interactions. We find a total cross section of 7.3 ± 1.3 mb. Most of this cross section is found in the lower topology events (⩽ 10 prongs), and in the central and forward rapidity regions. The P T 2 dependence of ϱ 0 production, 〈: n > ϱ 0 per event, and the ϱ 0 / π + ratios are also discussed.

We have studied inclusive Δ++(1236) production for |tpΔ|<1.0 (GeV/c)2 in a 50 000 picture exposure of the 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV/c proton beam. The inclusive Δ++ cross section for one hemisphere in the center-of-mass system is (1.30±0.14) mb. The mean charged multiplicity of the system recoiling off the Δ++ is in agreement with that for laboratory π−p interactions at the same energy in the center-of-mass frame. The inclusive Δ++ production is compared to inclusive Λ0 and proton production in the same experiment. The connection between Δ++ production and diffraction is discussed. We find that not all Δ++ come from the decay of a diffractively-produced state. The PT2 distribution for the Δ++ has a slope of (10.5±0.9) (GeV/c)−2 for PT2≲0.2 (GeV/c)2. This slope, together with the decay angular distribution of the Δ++ at small momentum transfer, suggests a strong pion-exchange contribution to the inclusive process. We compare the data to the expectation of a triple-Regge model with ρ- and π-exchange contributions.

Results of a Fermilab experiment using the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber are reported, with the main emphasis on pion production in the central region. Single-particle inclusive and semi-inclusive distributions in rapidity, Feynman x, and pT2 for both π− and π+ are presented and compared with results of other experiments. Two-particle distributions are investigated using the correlation-function formalism. The relation between inclusive and semi-inclusive correlation functions is discussed. The semi-inclusive correlation functions in rapidity are found to have short-range character compatible with the ideas of independent-cluster-emission models. Evidence for effects due to Bose-Einstein statistics of like particles is found by comparing the joint correlation function in rapidity and azimuthal angle, as well as the charged multiplicity associated with transverse momentum in the like- and unlike-charge combinations. Data on the average associated transverse momentum are also presented. The inclusive and semi-inclusive three-particle distributions are presented for all charge combinations. The inclusive three-particle correlations are found to be small for events with more than four particles in the final state. Two independent ways were found in which three-particle densities can be expressed in terms of one- and two-particle densities.

We have investigated the inclusive production of γ, KS0, Λ0, and Λ¯0 in 100-GeV/c p¯p interactions in the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at Fermilab. We present various inclusive distributions and compare them with corresponding distributions in 100-GeV/c pp interactions and lower-energy p¯p interactions. We find some evidence for Σ(1385) production but none for K*(890) production. We find evidence for a nonzero Λ0 polarization of -0.45 ± 0.21.

A study of 205-GeV/c π−p interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

We have investigated inclusive Λ , Λ and Σ ± (1385) productions in 405 GeV/ c pp interactions. The observed cross sections are σ ( Λ )=4.05±0.39 mb, σ( Λ =0.63±0.17 mb, σ ( Σ + (1385))=0.74±0.17 mb and σ ( Λ − (1385))=0.56±0.17 mb. Λ production is dominant in a central region of ∣ x ∣≤0.4. The Λ/ Λ production ratio at ∣ x ∣≈0 is found to be 1.2±0.5. The excess, about 0.2 mb, of σ ( Λ + (1385)) over σ ( Λ − (1385)) is most likely attributed to proton fragmentations (∣ x ∣≥0.4), and gives an evidence for scaling.

We present results on inclusive Δ ++ (1236) production in 100 GeV/ c p p interactions. In the region | t | < 1 GeV 2 we find a cross section of 1.29 ± 0.15 mb. Comparisons with pp interactions at high energies show Δ ++ production in pp and p p interactions to be very similar. The decay angular distributions of the Δ ++ are consistent with production predominantly through pion-exchange and the properties of the system recoiling from the Δ ++ are similar to those of real π + p interactions. However, the p π + background is found to show qualitatively similar behaviour. In contrast to the indications of Δ ++ production through pion exchange we also find evidence that events proceeding through diffraction dissociation are more likely to contain Δ ++ than other events. We present results on the forward production of Δ ++ in association with Δ ++ and protons.

Differential cross sections for ρ0 production as functions of c.m. rapidity and transverse momentum are compared with the corresponding differential cross sections for pion production. Effects of various methods of estimating background on the values obtained for ρ0 production cross sections are discussed. About 10% of the final-state charged pions appear to come from ρ0 decay. We present new data on charged particle production in p p interactions at 100 GeV/ c . Comparisons are made between p p annihilations (estimated by differences) between corresponding p p and pp data samples) and e + e − annihilation into hadrons. A technique for separating the inclusive proton and pion spectra is described and the resulting pion spectra are studied in terms of Feynman x , rapidity and p T . Comparison with pp data allows us to estimate the pion spectra in p p annihilations and we find agreement with predictions of Mueller-Regge theory. We also present results on semi-inclusive π ± and proton production, give updated topological cross sections and describe further attempts to isolate effects due to annihilations. Finally we investigate the diffractive excitation of the antiproton into low-mass states by studying events with a slow recoil proton.

Results on inclusive production of γ,K n , Λ 0 and Λ 0 in K − p interactions at 110 GeV/ c are presented. Total cross sections, and differential cross sections in terms of Feynman x , rapidity and p T 2 are given. It is found that about 40% of K n 's are produced together with a strange particle pair, and that 80% of Λ 0 's are produced together with a K K pair. These Λ 0, 's are produced predominantly in the backward direction. Fits to the form (1−| x |) n to the x F distributions of K n and Λ 0 in the fragmentation regions are found to be in general agreement with quark counting rule predictions.

Inclusive production of ϱ0,f, andg0 mesons and ofKs0,K*0 (892), ϕ andK*0(1430)mesons has been measured at <y>∼2.6 and <pT>∼1.1 GeV/c in proton-proton interactions at\(\sqrt s= 52.5\) GeV. The negative particle from the two-body decays of these resonances were identified by a threshold Cerenkov counter and used for triggering. Starting from the measured differential cross section, total inclusive cross sections for the vector and tensor mesons were determined using various parametrizations for they andpT dependence of the differential cross section. Results of the experimental study of inclusive φ meson production off berillium nuclei by 70 GeV/ c protons in the beam fragmentation region x > 0.41 are presented. Fitting of the measured differential cross sections to the forms d σ d x ∼ (1 − x) n x and d σ d p 2 t ∼ exp (−bp 2 t ) gives the parameters n = 6.0 ± 1.7 and b = (2.4 ± 0.7) (GeV/ c ) −2 . In the framework of a quark-parton model the measured φ meson x -distribution suggests that in the region of x > 0.41 nearly 90% of the φ mesons are produced via a strange sea quark fusion. The ratio of the OZI-forbidden and OZI-allowed transition coupling constants has been found to be ten times smaller than the same ratio calculated from the partial decay widths. The total inclusive cross section is estimated to be σ (pN → φ X) = (0.7 ± 0.2) × 10 −27 cm 2 .

Total and differential cross sections ofK*−(890),K*−(890),\(\bar K^{ * 0} \)(890),K*0(890),\(\bar K^{ * 0} \)(1430) andϱ0(770) produced inK−p interactions at 110 GeV/c are presented. The cross sections of the neutral resonances show a smooth increase with energy from 10 to 110 GeV/c incident momentum. For theK*+(890) and theK*0(890), i.e. the resonances with strangenessS=+1, this rise is quite significant: their cross sections practically double between 32 GeV/c and 110 GeV/c incidentK− momentum. About 50% of the neutral kaons and 30% of charged pions produced inK−p interactions at our energy are found to be decay products of the resonances considered.

Dimuon and trimuon events produced by the interaction of 250 GeV muons in an iron target have been studied and are shown to originate predominantly from charm production. The data are used to measure the contribution of charm to the nucleon structure function F 2 . The cross sections for real photoproduction ( Q 2 =0) of charm in the current fragmentation region are derived as a function of photon energy and are found to be ∼0.6% of the total, hadronic photoproduction cross section in this energy range. The measured cross sections are found to be well represented by the photon-gluon fusion model. The charmed quark fragmentation function is obtained by using this model to fit the measured decay muon energy distribution and is found to be well represented by exp(1.6±1.6) Z . The data are used to study the momentum distribution of the gluons in the nucleon. An upper limit of 1.4% (90% confidence level) is set on the branching ratio D→ μν and a model-dependent upper limit on the branching ratio F→ μν is derived.

We present the general properties of jets produced bye+e− annihilation. Their production and fragmentation characteristics have been studied with charged particles for c.m. energies between 12 and 43 GeV. In this energy rangee+e− annihilation into hadrons is dominated by pair production of the five quarksu, d, s, c andb. In addition, hard gluon bremsstrahlung effects which are invisible at low energies become prominent at the high energies. The observed multiplicity distributions deviate from a Poisson distribution. The multiplicity distributions for the overall event as well as for each event hemisphere satisfy KNO scaling to within ∼20%. The distributions ofxp=2p/W are presented; scale breaking is observed at the level of 25%. The quantityxpdδ/dxp is compared with multigluon emission calculations which predict a Gaussian distribution in terms of ln(1/x). The observed energy dependence of the maximum of the distributions is in qualitative agreement with the calculations. Particle production is analysed with respect to the jet axis and longitudinal and transverse momentum spectra are presented. The angular distribution of the jet axis strongly supports the idea of predominant spin 1/2 quark pair production. The particle distributions with respect to the event plane show clearly the growing importance of planar events with increasing c.m. energies. They also exclude the presence of heavy quark production,e+e−→Q\(\bar Q\) for quark masses up to 5<mQ<20.3 GeV (|eQ|=2/3) and 7<mQ<19 GeV (|eQ|=1/3). The comparison of 1/σtotdδ/dpT measured at 14, 22 and 34 GeV suggests that hard gluon bremsstrahlung contributes mainly to transverse momenta larger than 0.5 GeV/c. The rapidity distribution forW≧22 GeV shows an enhancement away fromy=0 which corresponds to an increase in yield of 10–15% compared to the centre region (y=0). The enhancement probably results from heavy quark production and gluon bremsstrahlung. The particle flux around the jet axis shows with increasing c.m. energy a rapidly growing number of particles collimated around the jet axis, while at large angles to the jet axis almost noW dependence is observed. For fixed longitudinal momentump‖ approximate “fan invariance” is seen: The shape of the angular distribution around the jet axis is almost independent ofW. The collimation depends strongly onp‖. For smallp‖,p‖<0.2 GeV/c, isotropy is observed. With increasingp‖ the particles tend to be emitted closer and closer to the jet axis.

Results are presented on the transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons in 280 GeV muon-proton deep inelastic interactions. The transverse momenta are defined relative to the accurately measured virtual photon direction and the experiment has almost complete angular acceptance for the final state hadrons. Significantly larger values of the average transverse momentum squared are found for the forward going hadrons than for the target remnants. This result, combined with a study of the rapidity region over which the transverse momentum is compensated, can be explained by a significant contribution from soft gluon radiation, but not by a large value of the primordial transverse momentum of the struck quark.

We have measured the inclusive production properties of D and D messons produced from pp interactions at s =27.4 GeV . The differential production cross section is well represented by the empirical form d 2 σ d x F d P 2 T = 1 2 [σ ( D / D )(n+1)b](1−|x F |) n exp (−bp 2 T ) with n=4.9 ± 0.5, b=(1.0±0.1)( GeV /c) −2 , and the inclusive D / D cross section σ ( D / D ) is (30.2±3.3) ωb. The QCD fusion model predicts D / D production which is in good agreement with our data except for the magnitude of the cross section which depends sensitively on the assumed mass of the charm quark.

We have measured the cross section for production of ψ and ψ′ in p¯ and π− interactions with Be, Cu, and W targets in experiment E537 at Fermilab. The measurements were performed at 125 GeV/c using a forward dimuon spectrometer in a closed geometry configuration. The gluon structure functions of the p¯ and π− have been extracted from the measured dσdxF spectra of the produced ψ's. From the p¯W data we obtain, for p¯, xG(x)=(2.15±0.7)[1−x](6.83±0.5)[1+(5.85±0.95)x]. In the π− case, we obtain, from the W and the Be data separately, xG(x)=(1.49±0.03)[1−x](1.98±0.06) (for π−W), xG(x)=(1.10±0.10)[1−x](1.20±0.20) (for π−Be).

We report on a study of inclusive particle production in pp-interactions at 400 GeV/c. The data are based on 472 K reconstructed events recorded in the NA 27 experiment using the LEBC-EHS facility at CERN. The production cross sections are determined of pseudo scalar (π±,0, η andK±), scalar (f0(975)), vector (ρ±,0(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020),K*0(892), and\(\bar K^{ * 0} \)(892)), and tensorf0 mesons, of protons and antiprotons, and theΔ++,+,0(1232), and Λ(1520) baryon resonances in the forward hemisphere of the center of mass system, as well as longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions. We report on a study of inclusiveπ0 and η meson production inπ+p andK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c beam momentum. The Feynman-x spectrum ofπ0 is very similar in shape and normalization to that of negatively charged particles produced in the same experiment. The results are compared with data at other energies and with FRITIOF model predictions. This model overestimates the η cross section by a factor of 2.5. It reproduces theπ0 cross section correctly, but predicts a too hardπ0x distribution.

Exclusive ϱ 0 and φ muoproduction on deuterium, carbon and calcium has been studied in the kinematic range 2< Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 and 40 < ν < 180GeV. We discuss the Q 2 dependence of the cross sections, the transverse momentum distributions for the vector mesons, the decay angular distributions and, in the case of the ϱ 0 , nuclear effects. The data for 0 production are compatible with a diffractive mechanism. The distinct features of φ production are a smaller cross section and less steep p t 2 distributions than those for the 0 mesons.

With a data sample containing 1.1×105 J/ψ→μ+μ− decays reconstructed with 16 MeV/c2 rms mass resolution, we have measured the differential cross sections versus Feynman-x, rapidity, and pT for the production of J/ψ and ψ’ in 800 GeV/c p-Au collisions. Our results are compared with leading-order QCD predictions and with previous measurements. While the shapes of the cross sections are in qualitative agreement with QCD predictions, the magnitudes disagree by factors of 7 (J/ψ) and 25 (ψ’). Assuming an appropriate form for the differential cross sections in regions not measured we derive a total J/ψ production cross section σ(p+N→J/ψ+X)=442±2±88 nb/nucleon and a (model-dependent) total ψ’ cross secton σ(p+N→ψ’+X)=75±5±22 nb/nucleon. For J/ψ produced at central rapidity, dσ(p+N→J/ψ+X)/dy‖y=0=230±5±46 nb/nucleon.
