The inclusive π0 production cross-section and the η/π0 ratio have been measured inpp collisions at\(\sqrt s= 63 GeV\) at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings in the rapidity range 2.00<y<2.75. The inclusive cross section for larger p T π 0 production near 90° in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR is presented for centre-of-mass energies 30.7, 53.1 and 62.4 GeV. The data are inconsistent with scaling of the form p T − n F ( x T ), with constant n or with n allowed to depend on x T = 2p T / s . For s = 53.1 and 62.4 GeV , the value of n found for 3.5 < p T < 7.0 GeV/ c is n = 8.0 ± 0.5, in agreement with previous experiments. However, for 7.5 < p T < 14.0 GeV/ c the value becomes n = 5.1 ± 0.4.

A measurement of direct photon production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy ∝ s =63 GeV is reported. Arrays of lead-glass calorimeters and multiwire proportional chambers were used as photon detectors. Data are presented in the transverse momentum range from 4.5 to 10 GeV/ c and compared with QCD predictions. The event structure of this sample is compared with that of a set dominated by high transverse momentum π O ́ ' s .

A measurement of the single-spin asymmetry A N in p↑ + p→ π 0 + X at 200 GeV with x F = 0 shows a transition in the production process from a “ low -x T ” regime with A N = 0, through an intermediate region of negative asymmetry, to a “ high -x T ” regime with A N > 0.3. This transition occurs at x T ≈ 0.4 and is consistent with x T -scaling of A N in pion production using polarized beams or targets from √− s =5.2 to 19.4 GeV. Results for A N in η production by polarized protons and in π 0 production by polarized antiprotons are also presented.

Using a quark-diquark fragmentation model, in which either the Field-Feynman or the Lund model is coupled with a quark-diquark distribution function, we study transverse momentum distributions,pT, for the inclusive reactionspp→hadron +anything at 360 GeV/c. We find that a primordial mean transverse momentum 〈kT〉≃0.4 GeV/c can well reproduce thepT2 distributions of charged hadrons, π0,Ks0, Λ0,K* and Σ* and the Feynmanx−pT correlations. The π0 inclusive and semi-inclusive, single-spin asymmetries have been measured using transversely polarized, 200-GeV/c proton and antiproton beams colliding with an unpolarized hydrogen target. The measured asymmetries are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties for the kinematic region -0.15<xF<+0.15 and 1<pT<4.5 GeV/c. Improvements in the data analysis showed that our earlier large asymmetries at pT≳3 GeV/c were not correct. These data indicate that PQCD expectations seem confirmed and the higher-twist contribution to the single-spin asymmetry in π0 production at xF=0 is not large. Additional evidence for such a conclusion comes from the measurement of a semi-inclusive π0 asymmetry, where associated charged particles are detected opposite to the π0 azimuthal direction. This experiment also provides high-statistics data on the inclusive π0 cross sections for pp and p¯p collisions at √s≊19.4 GeV. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

The analyzing power in inclusive charged pion production has been measured using the 200 GeV Fermilab polarized proton beam. A striking dependence in x F is observed in which A N increases from 0 to 0.42 with increasing x F for the π + data and decreases from 0 to −0.38 with increasing x F for π − data. The kinematic range covered is 0.2⩽ x F ⩽0.9 and 0.2⩽ p T ⩽2.0 GeV / c . In a simple model our data indicate that at large x F the transverse spin of the proton is correlated with that of its quark constituents.

We present results on the production of high transverse momentum pizero and eta mesons in pp and pBe interactions at 530 and 800 GeV/c. The data span the kinematic ranges: 1 < p_T < 10 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in rapidity. The inclusive pizero cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations and to expectations based on a phenomenological parton-k_T model.

We report the results of an experiment made at the CERN ISR to investigate the possible diret production of single photons in pp collisions at √ s = 53.2 GeV at 90° and in the p t interval 2.3 to 5.7 GeV/ c . The value of the ratio R = n γ / n π 0 is compatible with zero for low p t ⪅ 3 GeV/ c but, in spite of the large error, shows a trend to increase for larger p t .

We have measured direct photon production in pp collisions at the CERN intersecting storage rings for c.m. energies 31 < √ s < 63 GeV and transverse momenta up to 9GeV/ c , using segmented lead/liquid-argon calorimeters. Inclusive π 0 production at 90° has been studied at the ISR at s 1 2 = 52.7 and 62.4 GeV over the p T range from 7 to 15 GeV/ c . The two photons from π 0 decay yielded overlapping electromagnetic showers in the liquid-argon-Pb plate calorimeter detector system. Any direct photon production is included in these measurements. We report on a study of inclusive particle production in pp-interactions at 400 GeV/c. The data are based on 472 K reconstructed events recorded in the NA 27 experiment using the LEBC-EHS facility at CERN. The production cross sections are determined of pseudo scalar (π±,0, η andK±), scalar (f0(975)), vector (ρ±,0(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020),K*0(892), and\(\bar K^{ * 0} \)(892)), and tensorf0 mesons, of protons and antiprotons, and theΔ++,+,0(1232), and Λ(1520) baryon resonances in the forward hemisphere of the center of mass system, as well as longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions. The results are compared with predictions of the FRITIOF model and with other experimental data.

We have measured the ratio of inclusive production of η to π0 at transverse momenta above 1.5 GeV/c. Results are presented for various meson and proton beams with momenta of 100, 200, and 300 GeV/c incident upon a hydrogen target. The ηπ0 production ratio is found to be independent of incident beam momentum and of the transverse and longitudinal momenta of production. The ratio for pion- and proton-induced reactions is 0.44 ± 0.05; for kaons, it is 0.74 ± 0.12.

We have measured large-transverse-momentum (p⊥) inclusive π0 production at c.m. angles centered near 90° for π±p and pp interactions at 100 and 200 GeV/c. This is the first such measurement using a pion beam. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing p⊥ and is independent of energy when expressed as a function of x⊥=p⊥pmax. Data on the multiplicity and inclusive spectra of γ produced in inelastic pNe20 and pN interactions at 300 GeV are presented. The γ multiplicity for pNe20 interactions is 11.43±0.23, and the ratio of 〈nγ〉 for pNe20 and pN interactions is 1.48±0.05. From an analysis of the effective-mass distributions, 〈nπ0〉=4.91±0.52 and 〈nη0〉=1.47±0.33. In fact, η0 production is much higher in pNe20 interactions [R(η0π0)=0.66±0.12 for np≥21] than in pN interactions [R(η0π0)=0.06±0.04]. No η′(958) signal is seen. Strong correlations between 〈nγ〉 and np, the number of secondary protons, are observed, primarily from the central and target fragmentation regions. Inclusive y* and p⊥ spectra are analyzed and evidence for low-energy cascading and rescattering of fast particles in the projectile fragmentation region is discussed. The data are compared to the predictions of the additive quark model, the Lund model, and the dual parton model.

The π0 inclusive cross section for c.m. production angles θ=90° and 22°>~θ>~5° at c.m. energies of s=23 and 53 GeV has been measured. This cross section is strongly dependent on both θ and s at small angles. The hypothesis of radial scaling is shown to be incapable of incorporating both θ and s dependence of the cross section. Neutral-pion production in pp interactions has been studied using 8000 photon conversions in the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. Inclusive π0 multiplicity moments and ππ correlation integrals are presented; f200 is determined to be + 3.0±0.8. For the semi-inclusive π0 multiplicity distributions we find 〈n(π0)〉n− to increase with n−, while the dispersions are n− independent. Results on f2−0, f200, and f2,n−00 are compared to predictions of simple cluster models.

Charged- and neutral-particle production from 400-GeV/c pp collisions are measured simultaneously using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. The π0 and K0 cross sections are rising at Fermilab energies, while the Λ0 cross section remains fairly constant. Similarly, the average number of π0's and K0's increases as a function of the number of negative particles in an event, yet no such dependence is noted for the Λ0's. The ratio of average number of π0 to average number of π− per inelastic collisions is found to be constant at Serpukhov and Fermilab energies (40 to 400 GeV/c) and equal to 1.22±0.02. Cross sections for Σ0 and Σ¯0 production are measured and limits are found for η0 and ω0 production. Neutral- and charged-pion correlations are compared with five pion-production models.

Data on stable hadron production in p + p and p + n interactions at 200 GeV/ c are reviewed. Methods to construct missing data in the p + p, p + n, and n + n interactions are derived from charge symmetry and charge, baryon and strangeness conservation, and used to yield nucleon-nucleon interaction results. These may be useful for evaluating nucleus-nucleus collision measurements in terms of enhancements and suppressions. Parameterizations of p t 2 and rapidity distributions are presented to provide yields in acceptance cuts for comparisons to nucleus-nucleus data. As an example the derived nucleon-nucleon multiplicities are reduced to the acceptances of the NA-35 CERN S + S experiment.

We present a study of the transverse momentum spectrum of π 0 's produced at c.m. angles θ = 90° and 53° in pp collisions at √ s = 23.6, 30.8, 45.1, 53.2, and 62.9 GeV. The experiment was performed with a lead-glass detector. The data can be described with the usual parametrization p T −n ƒ;(x T , θ) , with n = 7.2 ± 0.2. Comparison between the 90° and 53° data further indicates no appreciable dependence on θ , at least for x T < 0.3. Two-particle inclusive cross sections for π 0 's produced alongside are also presented. They are observed to have a dependence upon the transverse momentum of the dipion similar to that of single-particle cross sections and with the same value of n . Two-photon decays of η mesons are observed between 3 and 4 GeV/ c transverse momentum with a production cross section half of that of π 0 .

The analyzing power AN in inclusive π0 production has been measured with use of the new 185-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. We obtain the value AN=0.10±0.03 for π0's in the kinematic region 0.2<xF<0.8 and 0.3<pT<1.2 GeV/c. We compare high-transverse-momentum (P⊥) inclusive π0 production from π−, K−, p, and p¯ beams, at 100 and 200 GeV/c, for center-of-mass (c.m.) angles ranging from 2° to 115° and P⊥<4.5 GeV/c. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing P⊥, and changes dramatically with c.m. angle. Also, the ratios σ(K−p→π0X)σ(π−p→π0X) and σ(p¯p→π0X)σ(pp→π0X) are approximately constant. The inclusive cross-section for π0 production near 90° inpp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings has been studied for thepT range 3<pT<16GeV/c at four different centre-of-mass energies (\(\sqrt s = 30.6\), 44.8, 52.7, and 62.8 GeV). In this experiment the two photons from the π0→yy decay were resolved and measured separately forpT values up to 10 GeV/c. Results indicate an agreement with thepT−8 behaviour for the lower values ofpT and a slower decrease of the cross-section for the higher values ofpT.
