We have measured the cross section for production of ψ and ψ′ in p¯ and π− interactions with Be, Cu, and W targets in experiment E537 at Fermilab. The measurements were performed at 125 GeV/c using a forward dimuon spectrometer in a closed geometry configuration. The gluon structure functions of the p¯ and π− have been extracted from the measured dσdxF spectra of the produced ψ's. From the p¯W data we obtain, for p¯, xG(x)=(2.15±0.7)[1−x](6.83±0.5)[1+(5.85±0.95)x]. In the π− case, we obtain, from the W and the Be data separately, xG(x)=(1.49±0.03)[1−x](1.98±0.06) (for π−W), xG(x)=(1.10±0.10)[1−x](1.20±0.20) (for π−Be).

From analysis of V0 events observed in an exposure of the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber to 303−GeVc protons, we obtain these results: (1) 〈nπ0〉 rises approximately linearly with n-, implying strong coupling of neutral and charged pions, while 〈nKS0〉 is less coupled to n; (2) γ, KS0, and Λ0 production cross sections are approaching a scaling limit by 303 GeVc; (3) within the limited statistics, dσdy is flat in the central region for KS0 and low-multiplicity γ events.

We report on a study of inclusiveπ0 and η meson production inπ+p andK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c beam momentum. The Feynman-x spectrum ofπ0 is very similar in shape and normalization to that of negatively charged particles produced in the same experiment. The results are compared with data at other energies and with FRITIOF model predictions. This model overestimates the η cross section by a factor of 2.5. It reproduces theπ0 cross section correctly, but predicts a too hardπ0x distribution.

π+p, K+p, and pp interactions at 100 GeV are studied using the Fermilab hybrid 30-inch bubble chamber with associated downstream multiparticle spectrometer and an unseparated tagged positive beam. Topological cross sections and charged-particle-multiplicity moments are presented and good agreement is found with Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling. The charged-multiplicity second moment, f2cc, and the second moment of produced (+ -) pairs, f2−−, are presented both with and without the diffractive-dissociation events, and are discussed in terms of the two-component model invoked to explain pp multiplicity distributions above 100 GeV. Single-particle inclusive distributions are presented and studied in terms of the Regge-Mueller forms of approach to scaling at asymptotic energies. Pomeron factorization is found to hold in the target-proton-associated backward center-of-mass hemisphere for inclusive particle production by incident π+, K+, and protons.

Results of the experimental study of inclusive φ meson production off berillium nuclei by 70 GeV/ c protons in the beam fragmentation region x > 0.41 are presented. Fitting of the measured differential cross sections to the forms d σ d x ∼ (1 − x) n x and d σ d p 2 t ∼ exp (−bp 2 t ) gives the parameters n = 6.0 ± 1.7 and b = (2.4 ± 0.7) (GeV/ c ) −2 . In the framework of a quark-parton model the measured φ meson x -distribution suggests that in the region of x > 0.41 nearly 90% of the φ mesons are produced via a strange sea quark fusion. The ratio of the OZI-forbidden and OZI-allowed transition coupling constants has been found to be ten times smaller than the same ratio calculated from the partial decay widths. The total inclusive cross section is estimated to be σ (pN → φ X) = (0.7 ± 0.2) × 10 −27 cm 2 .

Data on the multiplicity and inclusive spectra of γ produced in inelastic pNe20 and pN interactions at 300 GeV are presented. The γ multiplicity for pNe20 interactions is 11.43±0.23, and the ratio of 〈nγ〉 for pNe20 and pN interactions is 1.48±0.05. From an analysis of the effective-mass distributions, 〈nπ0〉=4.91±0.52 and 〈nη0〉=1.47±0.33. In fact, η0 production is much higher in pNe20 interactions [R(η0π0)=0.66±0.12 for np≥21] than in pN interactions [R(η0π0)=0.06±0.04]. No η′(958) signal is seen. Strong correlations between 〈nγ〉 and np, the number of secondary protons, are observed, primarily from the central and target fragmentation regions. Inclusive y* and p⊥ spectra are analyzed and evidence for low-energy cascading and rescattering of fast particles in the projectile fragmentation region is discussed. The data are compared to the predictions of the additive quark model, the Lund model, and the dual parton model.

We present a study of Z +gamma + X production in p-bar p collisions at sqrt{S}=1.8 TeV from 97 (87) pb^{-1} of data collected in the eegamma (mumugamma) decay channel with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The event yield and kinematic characteristics are consistent with the Standard Model predictions. We obtain limits on anomalous ZZgamma and Zgammagamma couplings for form factor scales Lambda = 500 GeV and Lambda = 750 GeV. Combining this analysis with our previous results yields 95% CL limits |h{Z}_{30}| < 0.36, |h{Z}_{40}| < 0.05, |h{gamma}_{30}| < 0.37, and |h{gamma}_{40}| < 0.05 for a form factor scale Lambda=750 GeV.

Using data onvp and\(\bar vp\) charged current interactions from a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN, the average multiplicities of charged hadrons and pions are determined as functions ofW2 andQ2. The analysis is based on ∼20000 events with incidentv and ∼10000 events with incident\(\bar v\). In addition to the known dependence of the average multiplicity onW2 a weak dependence onQ2 for fixed intervals ofW is observed. ForW>2 GeV andQ2>0.1 GeV2 the average multiplicity of charged hadrons is well described by〈n〉=a1+a2ln(W2/GeV2)+a3ln(Q2/GeV2) witha1=0.465±0.053,a2=1.211±0.021,a3=0.103±0.014 for thevp anda1=−0.372±0.073,a2=1.245±0.028,a3=0.093±0.015 for the\(\bar vp\) reaction.

Inclusive doubly differential cross sections d^2\sigma_{pA}/dx_Fdp_T^2 as a function of Feynman-x (x_F) and transverse momentum (p_T) for the production of K^0_s, Lambda^0 and anti-Lambda^0 in proton-nucleus interactions at 920 GeV are presented. The measurements were performed by HERA-B in the negative x_F range (-0.12<x_F<0.0) and for transverse momenta up to p_T= 1.6 GeV/c. Results for three target materials: carbon, titanium and tungsten are given. The ratios of production cross sections are presented and discussed. The Cronin effect is clearly observed for all three V^0 species. An update of the ALEPH non-strange spectral functions from hadronic $\tau$ decays is presented. Compared to the 2005 ALEPH publication, the main improvement is related to the use of a new method to unfold the measured mass spectra from detector effects. This procedure also corrects a previous problem in the correlations between the unfolded mass bins. Results from QCD studies and for the evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution to the anomalous muon magnetic moment are derived using the new spectral functions. They are found in agreement with published results based on the previous set of spectral functions.

Based on 520 000 fermion pairs accumulated during the first three years of data collection by the ALEPH detector at LEP, updated values of the resonance parameters of theZ are determined to beMZ=(91.187±0.009) GeV, ΓZ=(2.501±0.012) GeV, σhad0=(41.60±0.27) nb, andRℓ=20.78±0.13. By combining results from the MARK-J at PETRA on Bhabha scattering, μ + μ - and τ + τ - production with recent world data from neutrino-electron scattering experiments, we determine unique values for the leptonic weak neutral current coupling constants g V and g A in the framework of electroweak models containing a single Z 0 . In contrast to previous analyses, we only use data from purely leptonic interactions, and therefore avoid the inherent uncertainties resulting from the use of hadronic targets. Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have made two measurements of the mixing parameter χ d using kaons as flavour tags. Using D ∗+ K ± correlations we found χ d = 0.20 ± 0.13 ± 0.12 and from the study of (D ∗+ ℓ − ) K ± correlations we obtained χ d = 0.19 ± 0.07 ± 0.09. The branching ratio for B → D ∗+ X has been updated: Br( B → D ∗+ X) = (19.6 ± 1.9) %. We have also determined the average multiplicity of charged kaons in B 0 decays to be 0.78 ± 0.08.
Mixing parameter from counting kaon events. First (...,C=D*+K+-) and second(...,C=(D*+LEPTON-)K+-) value are obtained from a study of D*+K+- and (D*+LEPTO N-)K+- correlations respectively. Second value and the value, reported in Phys.Lett. 324B (1994) 249, were averaged, result third value (...,C=COMBINED) of the mixing parameter in the table (see text for details). In the second value (...,C=(D*+LEPTON-)K+-) the first systematic error is due to the background estimation, the branching ratio for the process B --> K+(K-) X, experimental cuts, and the second one is due to to the uncertainty on the branching ratio for the processes D0 --> K+- X.

We have measured the B0B¯0 mixing probability, χd, using a sample of 965 000 BB¯ pairs from Υ(4S) decays. Counting dilepton events, we find χd=0.157±0.016±0.018−0.021+0.028. Using tagged B0 events, we find χd=0.149±0.023±0.019±0.010. The first (second) error is statistical (systematic). The third error reflects a ±15% uncertainty in the assumption, made in both cases, that charged and neutral B pairs contribute equally to dilepton events. Significant two-particle correlations of dynamical origin are observed in 200 GeV/c π−p inclusive interactions. This is demonstrated by comparison with kinematic correlations calculated from an independent-particle-emission model. Two distinct correlation types are observed: (a) unlike-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 1.3 rapidity units independent of azimuthal separation, and (b) like-particle correlations with correlation length ∼ 0.4 rapidity units which are observed only for small azimuthal separations.

Two particle correlations of hadrons produced in 360 GeV/cpp interactions are investigated in the transverse plane and in rapidity. The data were obtained at the European hybrid spectrometer equipped with a rapid cycling bubble chamber. The observed transverse and rapidity correlations are compared with the one string LUND-and a two string dual parton-model. These models predict in general stronger correlations in the transverse plane and much weaker correlations in rapidity than found in the data. The LUND-FRITIOF-and multichain dual parton models provide a better reproduction of the data, although the agreement is not yet satisfactory. Only the UA5 cluster model GENCL shows agreement with the data.

Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, $d\Et/d\eta$, are presented for $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and additionally for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 130 GeV. The $d\Et/d\eta$ distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants $N_{\rm part}$, number of binary collisions $N_{\rm coll}$, and number of constituent-quark participants $N_{qp}$ calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au$+$Au, $\mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{\rm part}$ increases with $N_{\rm part}$, while $\mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{qp}$ is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, $dE_{T}/d\eta \propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}$, which has been used to represent $E_T$ distributions, is simply a proxy for $N_{qp}$, and that the $N_{\rm coll}$ term does not represent a hard-scattering component in $E_T$ distributions. The $dE_{T}/d\eta$ distributions of Au$+$Au and $d$$+$Au are then calculated from the measured $p$$+$$p$ $E_T$ distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au$+$Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the $d$$+$Au data, the additive-quark model does not.

Compensation of transverse momentum is studied in π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. SignificantpT-transfer is found between c.m.s. hemispheres. With respect to the beam axis transverse momentum is compensated over the whole event, with respect to the sphericity axis mainly within one hemisphere. The highestpT in the event is mainly compensated by increased multiplicity. The QGSM and FRITIOF models qualitatively reproduce these effects, but important differences are observed.

Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, $dE_T/d\eta$, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ and 62.4 GeV, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV, $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, and $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/d\eta$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

Results are presented on the transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons in 280 GeV muon-proton deep inelastic interactions. The transverse momenta are defined relative to the accurately measured virtual photon direction and the experiment has almost complete angular acceptance for the final state hadrons. Significantly larger values of the average transverse momentum squared are found for the forward going hadrons than for the target remnants. This result, combined with a study of the rapidity region over which the transverse momentum is compensated, can be explained by a significant contribution from soft gluon radiation, but not by a large value of the primordial transverse momentum of the struck quark.

The total hadronic cross-section sigma_gg(W) for the interaction of real photons, gg->hadrons, is measured for gg centre-of-mass energies 10<W<110 GeV. The cross-section is extracted from a measurement of the process e+e- -> e+e-g*g* -> e+e- hardrons, using a luminosity function for the photon flux together with form factors for extrapolating to real photons (Q^2=0 GeV^2). The data were taken with the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies 161, 172 and 183 GeV. The cross-section sigma_gg(W) is compared with Regge factorisation and with the energy dependence observed in gp and pp interactions. The data are also compared to models which predict a faster rise of sigma_gg(W) compared to gp and pp interactions due to additional hard gg interactions not present in hadronic collisions.

We measure the neutral D total forward cross section and the differential cross sections as function of Feynman-x ($x_F$) and transverse momentum squared for 500 GeV/c $\pi^-$-nucleon interactions. We extract fit parameters from the differential cross sections and provide the first direct measurement of the turnover point in the $x_F$ distribution, 0.0131+-0.0038. We measure an absolute $D^0 + \bar{D^0}$ ($x_F > 0$) cross section of 15.4+1.8-2.3 microbarns/nucleon (assuming a linear A dependence). The differential and total forward cross sections are compared to theoretical predictions and to results of previous experiments.
The neutral D total forward cross section summed over all XL (the 0.8 TO 1.0 XL bin is assumed to be half of the 0.6 TO 0.8 but with the same error).
The Feynman X differential cross section integrated over all PT**2.
The PT differential cross section integrated over the full forward XL direction.
The total elastic p-p, p-d and p-n cross sections measured at the Serpukhov accelerator and Dubna synchrophasotron are presented in this paper.

We present the first results of an experiment at the CERN intersecting storage rings, which measures the total cross-section in proton-proton collisions. The equivalent laboratory momenta are 291, 496, 1068 and 1480 GeV/c. We have made a direct measurement of αT as the ratio between the total interaction rate and the machine luminosity. The present paper gives a detailed description of the experimental apparatus and of the analysis procedure. We find that αT increases by about 10% in the energy region studied.

Total cross sections for Sigma- and pi- on beryllium, carbon, polyethylene and copper as well as total cross sections for protons on beryllium and carbon have been measured in a broad momentum range around 600GeV/c. These measurements were performed with a transmission technique adapted to the SELEX hyperon-beam experiment at Fermilab. We report on results obtained for hadron-nucleus cross sections and on results for sigma_tot(Sigma- N) and sigma_tot(pi- N), which were deduced from nuclear cross sections.

Neutrino and antineutrino total charged current cross sections on iron were measured in the 100, 160, and 200 GeV narrow band beams at the CERN SPS in the energy range 10 to 200 GeV. Assuming σ/E to be constant, the values corrected for non-isoscalarity are σv/E = (0.686 ± 0.019) * 10−38 cm2/ (GeV · nucleon) and σv/E = (0.339 ± 0.010) * 10−38 cm2/ (GeV·nucleon). Between 50 and 150 GeV no energy dependence of σ/E was observed within ±3% for neutrino and ±4% for antineutrino interactions.
