Three narrow peaks with masses 1632 ± 15, 1700 ± 15 and 1748 ± 15, reffered to as R 1 , R 2 and R 3 , have been observed in missing-mass spectrometer runs at incident pion momenta of 7 and 12 GeV/ c and a mass-resolution of ± 15 MeV. One-peak hypothesis gives a confidence level P ( χ 2 )=0.8%; the three-peak one gives P ( χ 2 )=60%. Statistical significance for R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is, respectively, 3.8, 6.6 and 6.1 standard deviations from the highest background line. R 1 and R 2 decay into one and three, while the R 3 decays mainly into three charged particles. Their physical widths are compatible with zero, with upper limits of the order of Γ ⩽30 MeV.

We have measured the total inelastic cross section (σinel) and charged-particle multiplicities obtained in pp collisions at 405 GeV/c. The data are from a preliminary 12 000-picture bubble-chamber exposure. We find σinel=32.8±1.0 mb; the low moments of the multiplicity distribution for negative particles are 〈n−〉=3.50±0.07, D−=2.37±0.05, f2−=2.1±0.2, and f3−=0.1±0.9. We also present updated results at 102 GeV/c.

In a 35 000-picture exposure of the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 300-GeV/c proton beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, 10054 interactions have been observed. The measured total cross section is $40.68 \pm 0.55$ mb, the elastic cross section is $7.89 \pm 0.52$ mb, and the average charged-particle multiplicity for inelastic events is $8.S0 \pm 0.12$.

New experimental results are presented on proton-proton elastic scattering at centre-of-mass energies s =23 GeV and s =62 GeV . The data are obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The absolute differential cross-sections show an energy-dependent behaviour. The position of the diffraction minimum changes from t =(−1.44±0.02)GeV 2 at 23 GeV to (−1.26±0.03)GeV 2 at 62 GeV. The cross-section at the second maximum is increasing with s . The connection of these observations with the hypothesis of “geometrical scaling” is discussed.

A thin polyethylene target was exposed to the internal proton beam of the Serpukhov accelerator at 30, 50, and 70 GeV. The wide-angle recoil protons were registered by photoemulsion stacks and the differential cross sections of the elastic p−p scattering in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.0025≤|t|≤0.12 (GeV/c)2 were measured. New experimental results are presented on proton-proton elastic scattering in the range of momentum transfer 0.8GeV 2 < − t < 9 GeV 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 53 GeV. The data are obtained sing the Split-Field- Magnet Detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The cross section has well-known minimum at − t = (1.34±0.02) GeV 2 but no further minimum or change of slope is observed between 2 and 6.5 GeV 2 .

Measurements on the reaction π−p→ηn have been carried out at Fermilab with beam energies from 20 to 200 GeV in the same experiment in which pion charge-exchange scattering was studied. The differential cross sections have a pronounced dip in the forward direction. The data can be described well by a simple Regge-pole model but the resulting A2 trajectory is not degenerate with the ρ trajectory extracted from the charge-exchange data.

We report on a study of pion charge-exchange scattering carried out at Fermilab in the energy range 20 to 200 GeV. The results can be described remarkably well by a simple Regge-pole model. The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

The reaction π−p→ωn in the beam-momentum range from 20 to 200 GeV/c has been studied using data acquired at Fermilab. In this Letter, the integral and differential cross sections for this reaction are presented. The integral cross sections are considerably larger than those previously reported. The differential cross sections can be reproduced quite easily by Regge models. As predicted by such models, natural-parity exchange dominates production throughout this energy region.

Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured in the region 4.9<|t|<12.1 GeV2 at a beam momentum of 201 GeV/c. If the form exp(At) is fitted to the data, the exponent A gradually changes from 1.5 to 0.9 GeV−2 over our t range. The data are consistent with the form exp(−6.6p⊥). A comparison with intersecting storage ring results shows that in this kinematical region the slopes are about the same, but dσdt at fixed t is still dropping with energy.

The measurements were made at the CERN ISR with a single arm spectrometer, at s = 2800 GeV 2 and momentum transfer squared (− t ) in the range 0.15 to 0.42 GeV 2 . The data are compared with elastic and inelastic diffractive proton-proton scattering data taken with the same apparatus at the same s and t values. The t dependence of the elastic dp → dp differential cross section is compared to simple predictions based on Glauber theory. The differential cross sections for pp → pX and dp → dX are also compared for M X 2 → 280 GeV 2 , where M X denotes the mass of system X recoiling against the measured proton and deuteron.

INVARIANT AND SINGLE DIFFRACTIVE INCLUSIVE DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTIONS.
The inclusive reactions pn → p s + x and π + n → p s + x at incident momentum of 195 GeV/ c have been studied in an exposure of the Fermilab 30 inch deuterium filled bubble chamber to a mixed ( π + , p) beam. Analysing the t and M 2 dependence of our data within the framework of triple-Regge models we conclude that pion exchange yields a dominating contribution. Comparing our data with the pp results we conclude that isoscalar Regge exchange, ω, is much larger than isovector, ϱ, Regge exchange. We observe significant leading π − emission from the recoiling mass x, comparable to that observed in on-mass-shell π − p → π − experiments. This verifies our conclusions about pion-exchange dominance in the above reactions.

We have investigated inclusive Λ , Λ and Σ ± (1385) productions in 405 GeV/ c pp interactions. The observed cross sections are σ ( Λ )=4.05±0.39 mb, σ( Λ =0.63±0.17 mb, σ ( Σ + (1385))=0.74±0.17 mb and σ ( Λ − (1385))=0.56±0.17 mb. Λ production is dominant in a central region of ∣ x ∣≤0.4. The Λ/ Λ production ratio at ∣ x ∣≈0 is found to be 1.2±0.5. The excess, about 0.2 mb, of σ ( Λ + (1385)) over σ ( Λ − (1385)) is most likely attributed to proton fragmentations (∣ x ∣≥0.4), and gives an evidence for scaling.

We present results on inclusive Δ ++ (1236) production in 100 GeV/ c p p interactions. In the region | t | < 1 GeV 2 we find a cross section of 1.29 ± 0.15 mb. Comparisons with pp interactions at high energies show Δ ++ production in pp and p p interactions to be very similar. The decay angular distributions of the Δ ++ are consistent with production predominantly through pion-exchange and the properties of the system recoiling from the Δ ++ are similar to those of real π + p interactions. However, the p π + background is found to show qualitatively similar behaviour. In contrast to the indications of Δ ++ production through pion exchange we also find evidence that events proceeding through diffraction dissociation are more likely to contain Δ ++ than other events. We present results on the forward production of Δ ++ in association with Δ ++ and protons.

Measurements of the total cross section have been performed at the ISR with c.m. energies between 23.5 GeV and 62.5 GeV. Two independent experimental methods have been applied, a measurement of total interaction rate and of small angle elastic scattering. Both experiments give consistent results showing that the total cross section increases by (11.8±1.5) % over the ISR energy range. This experiment has also measured the slope of the forward diffraction peak in elastic scattering at small momentum transfer. The elastic cross section shows the same relative rise as the total cross section, and the ratio λ of elastic to total cross section approaches a constant value of λ =0.178±0.003.

We report on experimental results on deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 53 GeV . The data were obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN intersecting Storage Rings. The t -dependence of the elastic cross section is measured up to − = 1.5 GeV 2 . Results on exclusive double diffraction dissociation in (N π ) and (N ππ ) final states are reported for neutron-neutron interactions at √ s = 26.4 GeV and for the proton-neutron interactions at √ s = 37.2 GeV. The data have been obtained at the CERN intersecting storage rings using split field magnet detector with proton-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron colliding beams. Factorization is shown to be verified to a very high degree in both mass- and t -differential cross-sections. The data confirm the previously observed rise in the proton-proton double diffractive cross-section as a function of c.m. energy.

We report the results of an experiment which measured n-p elastic scattering differential cross sections over a range in -t from 0.15 to ~ 3.6 (Gev/c)2 for incident neutron momenta from 70 to 400 GeV/c. We find the logarithmic slope parameter, evaluated at -t = 0.2 (GeV/c)2, to be consistent with existing proton-proton parameterizations. The data exhibit a dip in the cross section near -t 1.4 (Gev/c)2 for incident neutron momenta above 200 Gev/c. For neutron momenta less than 280 GeV/c, the neutron-proton cross sections are found to be higher than existing proton-proton data in the range 0.7 ~ -t ~ 1.3 (Gev/c)2 which is in contradic- tion to most Regge predictions.

Final results of our measurements of elastic proton-proton scattering at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) for c.m. energies √ s from 23 to 63 GeV and momentum transfers | t | from 0.8 to 10 GeV 2 are presented. Absolute differential cross sections have been obtained using the split-field magnet detector facility (SFM) at the five standard energies for integrated luminosities ranging from 0.3 to 4.9 (pb) −1 . The rising total cross section is found to define a scale for diffractive phenomena near the forward peak, including the position of the diffraction minimum near t = −1.4 GeV 2 . The cross section at the minimum is strongly energy dependent, approximately as the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the scattering amplitude in the forward direction. The phase of the scattering amplitude is found to change sign near the minimum. The component of diffraction scattering beyond the second maximum has a much weaker t -dependence than expected in simple eikonal or constituent pictures connecting this region to the forward peak. A further break in slope is observed near t = −6 GeV 2 . There is no evidence for another minimum for t values up to 10 GeV 2 .

Elastic ω-meson photoproduction on protons has been measured from 46 to 180 GeV. The cross section is approximately constant with photon energy and averages 1.10 ± 0.08 μb. The t dependence of the differential cross section is consistent with A exp(bt), where b=8.4±0.7 GeV−2. The photon-omega coupling constant, obtained from a normalization of hadron elastic-scattering cross sections to the photoproduction data of this experiment (with use of vector-meson dominance and an additive quark model), is γω24π=5.4±0.4.

Virtual photoproduction of J/ ψ mesons has been measured for 280 GeV muon iron interactions in an iron/scintillator calorimeter target. The J/ψ's were identified by their decay into muon pairs. 315 events were observed, about half of which were elastic. The t , Q 2 and v distributions of these elastic events are presented. The v dependence is measured between 40 and 180 Mev and compared with lower energy photoproduction results. The Q 2 dependence is compared with the predictions of the vector dominance model.

Hadron-nucleus elastic scattering was measured for $\mu^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ scatterinq from Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb targets at .incident beam momenta of 70 and 175 GeV/c and for $\mu^+$, $K^+$, and $p$ scattering from Be, Al, and Pb targets at an incident beam momentum of 125 GeV/c. In all cases the minimum -t is 0.001 $(GeV/c)^2$ ; the maximum -t is 0.07, 0.16. 0.30 ($GeV/c)^2$ for incident beam momenta of 70, 125, 175 GeV/c respectively. Parameterizations of the differential cross section, $d\sigma/dt$, in the forward direction are presented....

This paper contains a critical review of all the data produced at the ISR on proton-proton elastic scattering and total cross sections. This coherent and complete set of data is used to compute the impact parameter distribution of the proton-proton inelastic overlap integral. This impact parameter analysis has smaller errors than any other previously made, and confirms the good agreement with the geometrical scaling model while strongly disagreeing with models based on factorizing eikonals. For the first time we find indications of a second contribution to the peripheral rising of the proton-proton cross section in a region around 2.2 fm.

We have measured π+p, π−p, and pp elastic scattering at an incident-beam momentum of 200 GeV/c in the region of −t, four-momentum transfer squared, from 0.021 to 0.665 (GeV/c)2. The data allow an investigation of the t dependence of the logarithmic forward slope parameter b≡(ddt)(lndσdt). In addition to standard parametrization, we use functional forms suggested by the additive quark model to fit the measured dσdt distributions. Within the context of this model we estimate the size of the clothed quark in the pion and proton. Limits on the elastic-scattering amplitude derived from unitarity bounds are checked, and no violations are observed.

The polarization parameter in pp elastic scattering at 150 GeV/ c , and in the momentum transfer interval 0.4 ⩽ − t ⩽ 3.0 GeV 2 , has been measured in an MWPC and scintillation counter experiment at the CERN SPS using a polarized proton target. The polarization is decreasing steadily from zero to ≈ − 10% in the range 0.4 < − t < 1.3 GeV 2 ; for higher | t | the data suggests a change of sign. Results are also given for the differential cross section, which exhibits a small dip at − t = (1.46 ± 0.01) GeV.

We report on a measurement of elastic differential cross sections for p±p, π±p, and K±p at 100 and 200 GeV/c in the range 0.03<|t|<0.10 (GeV/c)2. Our data display a simple exponential dependence which is consistent with other measurements in this t region or with extrapolations from higher t.

Proton-proton elastic scattering using 201- and 400-GeV/c extracted beams at Fermilab has been measured in the region 4.9<−t<14.4 GeV2. Contrary to predictions of diffraction models, there is no sign of a second dip or "break," and the slope A in the fit exp(At) is smaller than predicted. It drops from 1.5 to 0.8 GeV−2 over our t range. The shape of the t distribution can be fitted by the power law dσdt∝t−8.4 which is close to a quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) prediction of t−8. At fixed t the 201-GeV/c cross sections are about 2.3 times those at 400 GeV/c which is compatible with the QCD and constituent-interchange-model prediction that dσdt∝s−10 at fixed ts.

In the tagged-photon beam at Fermilab, differential cross sections were measured for the elastic scattering of photons on a liquid-hydrogen target. The diffractive forward peak was measured for photon energies between 50 and 130 GeV and |t| values between 0.07 and 1.20 (GeV/c)2. The shape of the diffraction peak is similar to that seen in π−p scattering. The magnitude is that predicted by the optical theorem.

A study of quasielastic ω photoproduction where the ω was detected in its π0γ decay mode is reported. The recoil proton's angle was detected with a nonmagnetic spectrometer allowing a full reconstruction of the final state. Differential cross sections for 0.1<|t|<1.2 GeV2 are presented, providing a test of the vector-meson dominance model over an extensive energy and momentum transfer range. The shape of the differential cross section agrees with that seen in both elastic γp and πp scattering as expected from this model.
