Invariant cross-sections are presented for the inclusive reaction p + p → π o + anything, Measurements of large transverse momentum π o 's (2.5 GeV/ c < p ⊥ <9 GeV/ c ) were made near 90° at the CERN ISR at five centre-of-mass energies (√ s = 23.5, 30.6, 44.8, 52.7 and 62.4 GeV. At large p ⊥ , the invariant cross-sections are seem to vary with s and p ⊥ , in good agreement with a fit of the form Ap ⊥ − n F ( p ⊥ /√ s ), with n ≈8 and F ( p ⊥ /√ s )≈ exp (−26 p ⊥ /√ s ).

In an experiment performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), 11 e + e − pairs of high invariant mass value (> 2.5 GeV/c 2 ) have been observed. Of these events, 9 can be interpreted as arising from the reaction p + p → J (3.1) + anything. the cross-section for this reaction is estimated and compared with the result obtained at lower centre-of-mass energies.

Transverse momentum distributions of λ o , λ o , and K o , produced in pp collisions at x = 0, have obtained at the CERN ISR. The K o yield is in agreement with published K + , K − results, obtained at this centre-of-mass energy (√ s ≈44 GeV). New experimental results are presented on proton-proton elastic scattering in the range of momentum transfer 0.8GeV 2 < − t < 9 GeV 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 53 GeV. The data are obtained sing the Split-Field- Magnet Detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The cross section has well-known minimum at − t = (1.34±0.02) GeV 2 but no further minimum or change of slope is observed between 2 and 6.5 GeV 2 .

Final results of our measurements of elastic proton-proton scattering at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) for c.m. energies √ s from 23 to 63 GeV and momentum transfers | t | from 0.8 to 10 GeV 2 are presented. Absolute differential cross sections have been obtained using the split-field magnet detector facility (SFM) at the five standard energies for integrated luminosities ranging from 0.3 to 4.9 (pb) −1 . The rising total cross section is found to define a scale for diffractive phenomena near the forward peak, including the position of the diffraction minimum near t = −1.4 GeV 2 . The cross section at the minimum is strongly energy dependent, approximately as the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the scattering amplitude in the forward direction. The phase of the scattering amplitude is found to change sign near the minimum. The component of diffraction scattering beyond the second maximum has a much weaker t -dependence than expected in simple eikonal or constituent pictures connecting this region to the forward peak. A further break in slope is observed near t = −6 GeV 2 . There is no evidence for another minimum for t values up to 10 GeV 2 .

Virtual photoproduction of J/ ψ mesons has been measured for 280 GeV muon iron interactions in an iron/scintillator calorimeter target. The J/ψ's were identified by their decay into muon pairs. 315 events were observed, about half of which were elastic. The t , Q 2 and v distributions of these elastic events are presented. The v dependence is measured between 40 and 180 Mev and compared with lower energy photoproduction results. The Q 2 dependence is compared with the predictions of the vector dominance model.

The transverse momenta of charged hadrons produced in high energy muon-proton scattering have been studied. The W 2 , q 2 , x and z dependences of the data are compared with the predictions of a perturbative QCD model.

Samples of 9200 muon-neutrino and 3800 muon-antineutrino interactions on nuclei were obtained with the fine-grain calorimeter of the CHARM Collaboration at the CERN 200 GeV narrow-band neutrino beam. The interactions were classified as either neutral-current or charged-current processes on an event-by-event basis. Neutral-current and charged-current cross sections in neutrino and antineutrino interactions are presented. From these results we deduce a statistically significant contribution of right-handed coupling to the neutral hadronic current, and a value of the electroweak mixing angle corresponding to sin 2 θ = 0.220 ± 0.014.
