Invariant mass spectrum of μ + μ − pairs produced by 70 GeV/ c protons in Be target are presented. Distinct enhancements in the mass regions of ϱ, ω mesons, φ meson and J/ψ particle are observed. For J/ψ production x and p ⊥ 2 distributions are given. The total cross section for the reaction p + Be → ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) + … is equal to 9.5 ± 2.5 nb/nucleus .

Results of the experimental study of inclusive φ meson production off berillium nuclei by 70 GeV/ c protons in the beam fragmentation region x > 0.41 are presented. Fitting of the measured differential cross sections to the forms d σ d x ∼ (1 − x) n x and d σ d p 2 t ∼ exp (−bp 2 t ) gives the parameters n = 6.0 ± 1.7 and b = (2.4 ± 0.7) (GeV/ c ) −2 . In the framework of a quark-parton model the measured φ meson x -distribution suggests that in the region of x > 0.41 nearly 90% of the φ mesons are produced via a strange sea quark fusion. The ratio of the OZI-forbidden and OZI-allowed transition coupling constants has been found to be ten times smaller than the same ratio calculated from the partial decay widths. The total inclusive cross section is estimated to be σ (pN → φ X) = (0.7 ± 0.2) × 10 −27 cm 2 .

We have measured the inclusive production properties of D and D messons produced from pp interactions at s =27.4 GeV . The differential production cross section is well represented by the empirical form d 2 σ d x F d P 2 T = 1 2 [σ ( D / D )(n+1)b](1−|x F |) n exp (−bp 2 T ) with n=4.9 ± 0.5, b=(1.0±0.1)( GeV /c) −2 , and the inclusive D / D cross section σ ( D / D ) is (30.2±3.3) ωb. The QCD fusion model predicts D / D production which is in good agreement with our data except for the magnitude of the cross section which depends sensitively on the assumed mass of the charm quark.

A detailed analysis of the inclusive production of the vector mesonsφ,K*+,0(892)\(\bar K*^0 (892),\rho ^{ + ,0} ,\omega \) and the tensor mesonsK2*0)(1430) andf2(1270) inK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c is presented The data are compared with results at lower energies and with various quark-parton models. The production ofρ0,K*0(892) and\(\bar K*^0 (892)\) increases at the same rate as a function ofs, is concentrated in the central region and is not reproduced by the models. We report on a study of ρ0, ρ+, ω,\(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) andK*0 (892) inclusive production in π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c, for ρ+,\(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) for the first time in a π+p experiment. The data are compared withK+p data in the same experiment, with results of other experiments and with quark-parton models. Interesting differences are found between ρ+,0 and ω production.

Inclusive production of direct soft photons is studied inK+p andK+π interactions at 250 GeV/c. Total cross sections, Feynman-x and transverse momentum distributions of direct γ's are presented. The measured cross sections are several times larger than expected from QED inner bremsstrahlung, indicating the presence of an anomalous soft photon source. The model of Lichard and Van Hove, based on the “cold quark-gluon plasma” picture, agrees with the data.

Quasiexclusive neutral meson production in pN-interactions is studied in experiments with the SPHINX facility operating in a proton beam from the IHEP accelerator (Ep=70 GeV). The cross sections and the parameters of the differential distributions for πo, ω, η and Ko production in the deep fragmentation region (xF > 0.79 ÷ 0.86) are presented. The results show that such proton quasiexclusive reactions with baryon exchange may be promising in searches for exotic mesons.
