From analysis of V0 events observed in an exposure of the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber to 303−GeVc protons, we obtain these results: (1) 〈nπ0〉 rises approximately linearly with n-, implying strong coupling of neutral and charged pions, while 〈nKS0〉 is less coupled to n; (2) γ, KS0, and Λ0 production cross sections are approaching a scaling limit by 303 GeVc; (3) within the limited statistics, dσdy is flat in the central region for KS0 and low-multiplicity γ events.

We have measured cross section for γ , K S °, Λ and Λ production at 102 GeV/ c and find: σ ( γ ) = 170 ± 16 mb ., σ ( K S °) = 4.6 ± 0.5 mb ., σ ( Λ ) = 3.2 ± 0.4 mb ., and σ( Λ ) = 0.23 ± 0.10 mb. Both 〈 n π °〉 and 〈 n Ks °〉 appear to rise linearly with n - while the ratio 〈 n Ks °〉/〈 n π °〉 is approximately independent of n - . The integrated invariant cross section as a function of x as well as d σ /d y and d σ /d p T 2 are presented and compared with other data.

The K − p reactions leading to charge exchange and hyperon final states have been studied at nine momenta between 862 and 1001 MeV/ c using data from a 600 000 picture exposure of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory 25″ liquid hydrogen bubble chamber. Partial cross sections are determined for all final states resolved by kinematic fitting. In addition, differential cross sections are presented for the two-body final states K o n , Λπ o and Σ +- π -+ along with hyperon polarization angular distributions for Λπ o and Σ + π − .

In a 35 000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 300-GeV/c proton beam 1863 neutral V0's were measured. The inclusive cross sections for γ, Ks0, Λ0Σ0, and Λ¯0Σ¯0 are 257 ± 18 mb, 7.3 ± 0.6 mb, 3.6 ± 0.4 mb, and 1.0 ± 0.3 mb, respectively. The correlation with charged particles and other inclusive features are studied.

In an exposure of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber to a beam of 205-GeV/c protons, we have determined total and differential cross sections for the inclusive reactions p+p→γ+X, π0+X, (K0K¯0)+X, Λ+X. Invariant distributions in x indicate that for γ, K0, Λ production, scaling has set in somewhere before 69 GeV. The γ differential cross sections are consistent with the relation dσdPu(π0)=12[dσdPu(π+)+dσdPu(π−)] for all Pu, where Pu=PL* or P⊥. The differential cross sections for Λ and K0 production indicate a break in the distribution at |t−tmin|=1.5(GeVc)2 and 0.5(GeVc)2, respectively. The Λ polarization is found to be - (0.25 ± 0.26), consistent with zero throughout the x region.

The differential cross section for K+p elastic scattering has been measured at several momenta in the interval 200-600 MeV/c within a hydrogen bubble chamber. The data have been fitted with a partial-wave analysis. We obtain solutions which are dominated over the entire momentum range by s-wave scattering, with constructive interference between the nuclear and Coulomb scattering. The effective-range approximation with only s waves yields a K+p scattering length a=−0.314±0.007 F and an effective range r0=0.36±0.007 F. The measured total inelastic cross section at 588 MeV/c is 11−5+9 μb.

We studied K+p interactions at 100 GeV with the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber and associated spark-chamber system. We find σtot(K+p)=18.7±1.8 mb and σel(K+p)=2.0±0.4 mb. We present the charged-multiplicity distribution and its moments, and the charge-transfer distribution. The average inelastic charged multiplicity is 〈nc〉=6.65±0.31 and the two-charged-particle correlation functions are f2cc=4.52±1.32 and f2−−=0.47±0.35.

Data obtained from p-p collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 31 and 63 GeV are presented on correlations between momentum analysed forward π − , K − and p and charged particles observed in an omnidirectional hodoscope. The data show that significant correlations are present over the whole rapidity range for all three types of negative particles. The dependence on various kinematic variables suggests a cluster mechanism for the production of particles. In this picture, pions would be produced in clusters emitted in the fragmentation region while K − and p emanate from non-leading clusters.

Results are given on the inclusive production of charged pions, kaons, and nucleons, in proton-proton collisions at c.m. energies from √ s = 23 to 63 GeV at large angles and for the transverse momentum range 0.1 < p T < 4.8 GeV/ c . The dependence of the production spectra on the collision energy √ s , the transverse momentum p T , and the longitudinal rapidity is discussed.

From a study of 1226 neutral strange particles produced in pp interactions at 69 GeV/ c in the MIRABELLE hydrogen bubble chamber, we obtain the inclusive cross sections for K S 0 , Λ / Σ 0 , Λ / Σ 0 equal to 3.43 ± 0.23, 3.44 ± 0.2 and 0.16 ± 0.03 mb, respectively. The inclusive distributions are compared with corresponding data at other energies.

Transverse momentum distributions of λ o , λ o , and K o , produced in pp collisions at x = 0, have obtained at the CERN ISR. The K o yield is in agreement with published K + , K − results, obtained at this centre-of-mass energy (√ s ≈44 GeV). The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 105 000 frame exposure of the FNAL Hybrid Proportional Wire Chamber-30 inch Bubble Chamber System, in a tagged beam of 147 GeV/ c negative particles. Elastic, total and topological cross sections were obtained for both π − p and K − p interactions. Comparisons with other data, taken with various beam particles over large momentum intervals, show good agreement with KNO scaling, and similarity in the scaling behavior of σ n for the different beam particles.

We find indications that these differences can be attributed to “annihilation” processes.

Elastic scattering of hadrons on protons has been measured at momenta of 50, 100, and 200 GeV/c. The meson-proton scattering is found to be independent of momentum and meson type for −t>0.8 (GeV/c)2. Inelastic differential cross sections have been measured for π±p, K±p, and p±p at 140- and 175-GeV/c incident momentum over a |t| range from 0.05 to 0.6 GeV2 and covering a missing-mass region from 2.4 to 9 GeV2. For Mx2 greater than 4 GeV2, the invariant quantity Mx2d2σdtdMx2 was found to be independent of Mx2 at fixed t and could be adequately described by a simple triple-Pomeron form. The values obtained for the triple-Pomeron couplings are identical within statistics for all channels.
Data from 140 GeV and 175 GeV are combined. The distributions are fit to CONST*(SLOPE(C=1)*T+SLOPE(C=2)*T**2).
The inclusive production of low-momentum charged pions, kaons, and protons has been measured at x = 0 over the ISR energy range 23 < √ s < 63 GeV. The average increase in the invariant differential cross section is 36 ± 2% for π + , 41 ± 2% for π − , 52 ± 8% for K + , 69 ± 8% for K − , 8 ± 5% for p, and 84 ± for p ̄ . The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

We have investigated the inclusive production of γ, KS0, Λ0, and Λ¯0 in 100-GeV/c p¯p interactions in the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at Fermilab. We present various inclusive distributions and compare them with corresponding distributions in 100-GeV/c pp interactions and lower-energy p¯p interactions. We find some evidence for Σ(1385) production but none for K*(890) production. We find evidence for a nonzero Λ0 polarization of -0.45 ± 0.21.

A study of 205-GeV/c π−p interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

The ratios of K+, K−, p, and p¯ yields to pion yields at transverse momenta (p⊥) ranging from 0.77 to 6.91 GeV/c arepresented for 200-, 300-, and 400-GeV p−p and 400-GeV p−d collisions. The dependences of the particle ratios on p⊥ and the scaling variable x⊥=2p⊥s are discussed.

We have measured the production cross section for K s 0 in e + e − annihilation from 3.6 to 5.0 GeV center of mass energy. A substantial increase of the K s 0 yield is observed around 4 GeV in qualitative agreement with the charm hypothesis.
