In an exposure of the chamber Mirabelle at the Serpukhov accelerator, 1 943 interactions at 50 GeV/ c and 8 959 at 69 GeV/ c have been observed. Topological cross sections and charged multiplicity distributions are presented. The average charged multiplicities found are respectively 5.32 ± 0.13 and 5.89 ± 0.07.

Inclusive proton production in pp interactions at 205 GeV/c is studied using the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) 30-in. bubble chamber. The invariant cross section is presented in terms of several kinematic variables and compared with similar data obtained from counter experiments at Fermilab and at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). An important feature of this experiment is that it provides data for much wider ranges of the four-momentum transfer than have been attained in the counter experiments. It also gives full information on the associated charged-particle multiplicity of every event, thus permitting a detailed investigation of how various kinematic quantities depend on this parameter.

From a study of 1226 neutral strange particles produced in pp interactions at 69 GeV/ c in the MIRABELLE hydrogen bubble chamber, we obtain the inclusive cross sections for K S 0 , Λ / Σ 0 , Λ / Σ 0 equal to 3.43 ± 0.23, 3.44 ± 0.2 and 0.16 ± 0.03 mb, respectively. The experimentally determined average charged-particle multiplicities, 〈nX〉, of the systems, X, produced in the following reactions for 147 GeV/c incident pion momentum are presented as functions of the square of the invariant mass of X, MX2, and of |t|:π−p→πfast−X, π−p→pX, π−p→Δ++X, π−p→(π−π+)ρ0X, and π−p→Λ0X. Details of the analysis are discussed. These data can be fit by the expression 〈nX〉=A+B ln MX2+C|t| and the coefficients obtained for B are equal within their uncertainties. C is significantly different from zero only for π−p→πfast−X. These results and 〈nX〉 data from other inclusive and total-inelastic-reaction studies are discussed in terms of a simple model which assumes contributions to 〈nX〉 from the target-fragmentation, the central, and the beam-fragmentation regions in the case of total-inelastic reactions. For inclusive reactions, either the beam or target fragmentation is replaced by an exchange-particle-fragmentation contribution. The s, t, and MX2 dependence of the parameters of the model are deduced from triple-Regge considerations. The data are found to be consistent with the model and values are presented for the parameters.

Virtual photoproduction of J/ ψ mesons has been measured for 280 GeV muon iron interactions in an iron/scintillator calorimeter target. The J/ψ's were identified by their decay into muon pairs. 315 events were observed, about half of which were elastic. The t , Q 2 and v distributions of these elastic events are presented. The v dependence is measured between 40 and 180 Mev and compared with lower energy photoproduction results. The Q 2 dependence is compared with the predictions of the vector dominance model.

The experiment made use of the proportional hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on 995 K S 0 , 485 Λ, and 83 Λ found in a sample of 132 000 pictures. Cross sections are given for inclusive production of these particles by each of the three beam particles, and comparisons are made with measurements at other energies. Topological cross sections are also calculated, and KNO multiplicity scaling is investigated. Distributions are presented of invariant cross sections as functions of the Feynman scaling variable x and c.m. rapidity y . The transverse momentum-squared distributions with their fitted slopes are also given. Comparisons are made of the production characteristics for the three beam types.

We have used the ratio between the production rates of $K^0$'s and $π^−$'s in antineutrino-nucleon interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber to measure the size of the SU (3) symmetry violation in the production of quark-antiquark pairs to be 0.27 ± 0.04. This value is significantly larger than the value obtained from a recent ep experiment. There is no apparent dependence of the $K^0$/$π^−$ ratio with $W^2 , Q ^2 , x_b$ or $p_T^2$ .

The results of a study of strange particle production in charged current $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} N$ interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy $Ne-H_2$ mixture are presented. Production rates and average multiplicities of $K^0$'s and Λ's as functions of W 2 and Q 2 are given. The experimental data agree well with the quark-parton model predictions if a yield of 0.06 ± 0.02 of $K^0$'s and Λ's from charm production is included. Upper limits for D-meson production are given and the shape of the charmed quark fragmentation function is discussed. Inclusive production of the K ∗ (890) and Σ(1385) resonances is measured and it is shown that only about 5% of the K 0 mesons and Λ hyperons results from resonance decays. Relative production rates of neutral strange particles on proton and neutron targets are studied.

The transverse momenta of charged hadrons produced in high energy muon-proton scattering have been studied. The average squared transverse momentum 〈 p 2 ⊥ 〉 shows a strong dependence on z = E h / v characteristic of intrinsic momentum effects and a significant rise as a function of s = W 2 . The energy dependence of the average of the charged multiplicity and its dispersion in π + /K + /p interaction on protons at 147 GeV/ c is found to be the same as in e + e − annihilations if an “effective energy” variable is used instead of the total energy. The effective energy S eff is defined as the invariant mass of all secondaries left after the two leading particles have been removed. Fitting the expression aS eff b to the average charge multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉, we find the power b to be in good agreement with the value of 0.25 predicted by Fermi's statistical model and by Landau's hydrodynamical model.

In an experiment with the 30-inch Hybrid Spectrometer at Fermilab we have obtained the inclusive and semi-inclusive production cross sections of the ϱ0 meson using a conventional background subtraction technique. Production cross sections for the ϱ0 are derived as a function of the Feynman scaling variablex, and the transverse variablespt2 andEt=(pt2+M2)1/2. The longitudinal distributions are compared with the (1−x) dependence of the proton and meson valence quark structure functions, using various forms of recombination and fragmentation models. The transverse distributions are compared with thermodynamic models. We give density matrix elements for the ϱ0 production from pions in the extreme forward region.

The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber, filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mix, was exposed to a narrow-band νμ beam. Based on the observation of 830 charged-current νμ interactions, the cross section was found consistent with a linear rise with the neutrino energy in the interval 10 GeV<~Eν≲240 GeV. We have studied the inclusive production of K*±(890) and Y*±(1385) in pp, π+p, and K+p interactions at 147 GeV/c. The experiment used the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber with the hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on a sample of 1916 observed KS and 932 observed A. Inclusive cross sections are given for K*± and Y*± production from the three beams, and comparisons are made with experiments at other energies. Feynman-x and transverse-momentum-squared distributions are also calculated. The production of J/ ϑ and ϑ′ has been measured in 250 GeV muon iron interactions. The measured total cross sections are σ ( μ N → μ J/ ϑ X)=0.74±0.14 nb and σ ( μ N → μϑ ′X)=0.16 ± 0.07 nb. An upper limit on the cross section times branching ratio for ϒ production of BR · σ ( μ N → μϒ X) < 5.2 × 10 −38 cm 2 (at 90% confidence level) is obtained. About half the J/ ϑ cross section is found to have Z ⩾ 0.95 (where Z = E (J/ ϑ / ν ). The first-order photon-gluon fusion model agrees well with the measured Q 2 and ν dependence of the J/ ϑ data and is used to extract the gluon momentum distribution. However, higher order QCD effects are needed to explain the Z distribution of the J/ ϑ and the observed broadening of the P t 2 distribution with decreasing Z . The decay angular distributions of the J/ ϑ are found to be flat in the s -channel frame, but there is evidence for polarisation in the t -channel frame.

Dimuon and trimuon events produced by the interaction of 250 GeV muons in an iron target have been studied and are shown to originate predominantly from charm production. The data are used to measure the contribution of charm to the nucleon structure function F 2 . The cross sections for real photoproduction ( Q 2 =0) of charm in the current fragmentation region are derived as a function of photon energy and are found to be ∼0.6% of the total, hadronic photoproduction cross section in this energy range. The measured cross sections are found to be well represented by the photon-gluon fusion model. The charmed quark fragmentation function is obtained by using this model to fit the measured decay muon energy distribution and is found to be well represented by exp(1.6±1.6) Z . The data are used to study the momentum distribution of the gluons in the nucleon. An upper limit of 1.4% (90% confidence level) is set on the branching ratio D→ μν and a model-dependent upper limit on the branching ratio F→ μν is derived.

We have studied the reactionspp→ppπ+π-,K+p→K+pπ+π−π, π+p→ π+,pπ+π− and π−p →π+π− at 147 GeV/c using the 30-inch Fermilab hybrid system. All four reactions were detected with the same apparatus and analyzed in the same way. The energy dependence of the channel cross section was found to beAp−0.6+B for thepp reaction andAp−1+B for the other three. About 90% of the cross section at 147 GeV/c can be accounted for by either beam or target diffraction. Some of the remaining cross section may come from double Pomeron exchange reactions which we tried to isolate. We have tested the hypothesis of a factorizable Pomeron and our data indicates a violation of this hypothesis. We show that the 3π mass enhancement in the mass region 1.2–1.4 GeV is diffractively produced in the π± beam reactions. Fourprong, four-constraint and six-prong, four-constraint cross sections are reported.

The cross-section ratio of neutral-current and charged-current semileptonic interactions of muon-neutrinos on isoscalar nuclei has been measured with the result:Rv=0.3093±0.0031 for hadronic energy larger than 4 GeV. Using the CHARM detector 36 000 deep inelastic neutral-current reactions of neutrinos (and 2000 of antineutrinos) from the 160 GeV narrow-band beam were recorded. The differential cross section d σ d x in the Bjorken scaling variable x was computed by unfolding the effects of limited acceptance and of resolution of the detector as well as the ambiguity of the energy of the incoming neutrinos (produced by π- or K-decay). Combining the results from the neutrino and antineutrino data, the structure functions F 2 and xF 3 and the antiquark momentum distribution measured via the NC coupling were determined. The distributions are in agreement with the corresponding CC distibutions. Comparisons with deep inelastic muon scattering confirm the universality of nuclear structure functions as probed by the weak and the electromagnetic currents.

We also determined Γ invisible =0.567±0.080 GeV, corresponding to 3.42±0.48 number of neutrino flavors. We have made a precise measurement of the cross section for e + e − →Z 0 →hadrons with the L3 detector at LEP, covering the s range from 88.28 to 95.04 GeV. From a fit to the Z 0 mass, total width, and the hadronic cross section to be M Z 0 =91.160 ± 0.024 (experiment) ±0.030(LEP) GeV, Γ Z 0 =2.539±0.054 GeV, and σ h ( M Z 0 )=29.5±0.7 nb. We also used the fit to the Z 0 peak cross section and the width todetermine Γ invisible =0.548±0.029 GeV, which corresponds to 3.29±0.17 species of light neutrinos. The possibility of four or more neutrino flavors is thus ruled out at the 4σ confidence level.

The multiplicity distributions of charged particles in restricted rapidity intervals inZ0 hadronic decays measured by the DELPHI detector are presented. The data reveal a shoulder structure, best visible for intervals of intermediate size, i.e. for rapidity limits around ±1.5. The whole set of distributions including the shoulder structure is reproduced by the Lund Parton Shower model. The structure is found to be due to important contributions from 3-and 4-jet events with a hard gluon jet. A different model, based on the concept of independently produced groups of particles, “clans”, fluctuating both in number per event and particle content per clan, has also been used to analyse the present data. The results show that for each interval of rapidity the average number of clans per event is approximately the same as at lower energies.

Measurements of the cross section and forward-backward asymmetry for the reaction e + e − → μ + μ − using the DELPHI detector at LEP are presented. The data come from a scan around the Z 0 peak at seven centre of mass energies, giving a sample of 3858 events in the polar angle region 22° < θ < 158°. From a fit to the cross section for 43° < θ < 137°, a polar angle region for which the absolute efficiency has been determined, the square root of the product of the Z 0 → e + e − and Z 0 → μ + μ − partial widths is determined to be (Γ e Γ μ ) 1 2 = 85.0 ± 0.9( stat. ) ± 0.8( syst. ) MeV . From this measurement of the partial width, the value of the effective weak mixing angle is determined to be sin 2 ( θ w ) = 0.2267 ± 0.0037 . The ratio of the hadronic to muon pair partial widths is found to be Γ h / Γ μ = 19.89 ± 0.40(stat.) ± 0.19(syst.). The forward-backward asymmetry at the resonance peak energy E CMS = 91.22 GeV is found to be A FB = 0.028 ± 0.020(stat.) ± 0.005(syst.). From a combined fit to the cross section and forward-backward asymmetry data, the products of the electron and muon vector and axial-vector coupling constants are determined to be V e V μ = 0.0024 ± 0.0015(stat.) ± 0.0004(syst.) and A e A μ = 0.253 ± 0.003(stat.) ± 0.003 (syst.). The results are in good agreement with the expectations of the minimal standard model.

In this paper an investigation of the production of D ∗ ± mesons produced in e + e − collisions at energies around the Z 0 pole is presented. Based on 115 D ∗ ± mesons with x D∗ 2E D ∗ /E cm > 0.2 the properties of D ∗ mesons produced in the reaction Z 0 → c c are studied. Fixing the yield and the fragmentation function of bottom quarks to the values obtained at LEP using lepton tags, and average energy fraction of the D ∗ ± mesons from primary charmed quarks of 〈x c → D ∗ 〉 = 0.52 ± 0.03 +- 0.01 is found and Γ z 0 →c c = (323 ± 61 ± 35) MeV is determined. The first error is the combined statistical and systematic error from this experiment, and the second the total error from other sources.

The production of K 0 mesons in e + e − interactions at center of mass energies in the region of the Z 0 mass has been investigated with the OPAL detector at LEP. The rate is found to be 2.10±0.02±0.14 K 0 , Z 0 per hadronic event. The predictions from the JETSET and HERWIG generators agree very well with both the rate and the scale invariant cross section (1/σ had β) (dσ/d x E ) for K 0 production. Comparisons of the inclusive momentum spectrum with predictions of an analytical QCD formula and with data from lower center of mass energies are presented.

K0 multiplicity per hadronic event.
The production rate of final state photons in hadronic Z 0 decays is measured as a function of y cut = M ij 2 / E cm 2 the jet resolution parameter and minimum mass of the photon-jet system. Good agreement with the theoretical expectation from an O( αα s ) matrix element calculation is observed. Comparing the measurement and the prediction for y cut = 0.06, where the experimental systematic and statistical errors and the theoretical uncertainties are small, and combining this measurement with our result for the hadronic width of the Z 0 , we derived partial widths of up and down type quarks to be Γ u = 333 ± 55 ± 72 MeV and Γ d = 358 ± 37 ± 48 MeV in agreement with the standard model expectations. We compare our yield with the QCD shower models including photon radiation. At low γ cut JETSET underestimates the photon yield, and ARIADNE describes the production rate well.

From measurements of the cross sections for e + e − → hadrons and the cross sections and forward-backward charge-asymmetries for e e −→ e + e − , μ + μ − and π + π − at several centre-of-mass energies around the Z 0 pole with the DELPHI apparatus, using approximately 150 000 hadronic and leptonic events from 1989 and 1990, one determines the following Z 0 parameters: the mass and total width M Z = 91.177 ± 0.022 GeV, Γ Z = 2.465 ± 0.020 GeV , the hadronic and leptonic partial widths Γ h = 1.726 ± 0.019 GeV, Γ l = 83.4 ± 0.8 MeV, the invisible width Γ inv = 488 ± 17 MeV, the ratio of hadronic over leptonic partial widths R Z = 20.70 ± 0.29 and the Born level hadronic peak cross section σ 0 = 41.84±0.45 nb. A flavour-independent measurement of the leptonic cross section gives very consistent results to those presented above ( Γ l = 83.7 ± 0.8 rmMeV ). From these results the number of light neutrino species is determined to be N v = 2.94 ±0.10. The individual leptonic widths obtained are: Γ e = 82.4±_1.2 MeV, Γ u = 86.9±2.1 MeV and Γ τ = 82.7 ± 2.4 MeV. Assuming universality, the squared vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z 0 to charged leptons are: V ̄ l 2 = 0.0003±0.0010 and A ̄ l 2 = 0.2508±0.0027 . These values correspond to the electroweak parameters: ϱ eff = 1.003 ± 0.011 and sin 2 θ W eff = 0.241 ± 0.009. Within the Minimal Standard Model (MSM), the results can be expressed in terms of a single parameter: sin 2 θ W M ̄ S = 0.2338 ± 0.0027 . All these values are in good agreement with the predictions of the MSM. Fits yield 43< m top < 215 GeV at the 95% level. Finally, the measured values of Γ Z and Γ inv are used to derived lower mass bounds for possible new particles.
