We have measured cross section for γ , K S °, Λ and Λ production at 102 GeV/ c and find: σ ( γ ) = 170 ± 16 mb ., σ ( K S °) = 4.6 ± 0.5 mb ., σ ( Λ ) = 3.2 ± 0.4 mb ., and σ( Λ ) = 0.23 ± 0.10 mb. Both 〈 n π °〉 and 〈 n Ks °〉 appear to rise linearly with n - while the ratio 〈 n Ks °〉/〈 n π °〉 is approximately independent of n - . We have measured the total inelastic cross section (σinel) and charged-particle multiplicities obtained in pp collisions at 405 GeV/c. The data are from a preliminary 12 000-picture bubble-chamber exposure. We find σinel=32.8±1.0 mb; the low moments of the multiplicity distribution for negative particles are 〈n−〉=3.50±0.07, D−=2.37±0.05, f2−=2.1±0.2, and f3−=0.1±0.9. We also present updated results at 102 GeV/c.

The π − p differential elastic scattering cross sections have been measured for eight momenta in the 33–55 GeV/ c range. The energy dependence of the slope and of the total elastic scattering cross sections has been determined experimentally. The results are compared with the known data. The experimental data are compared both with the Regge pole model and with the quasi-potential one.

In an experiment performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), 11 e + e − pairs of high invariant mass value (> 2.5 GeV/c 2 ) have been observed. Of these events, 9 can be interpreted as arising from the reaction p + p → J (3.1) + anything. the cross-section for this reaction is estimated and compared with the result obtained at lower centre-of-mass energies.

New experimental results are presented on proton-proton elastic scattering at centre-of-mass energies s =23 GeV and s =62 GeV . The data are obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The absolute differential cross-sections show an energy-dependent behaviour. The position of the diffraction minimum changes from t =(−1.44±0.02)GeV 2 at 23 GeV to (−1.26±0.03)GeV 2 at 62 GeV. The cross-section at the second maximum is increasing with s . The connection of these observations with the hypothesis of “geometrical scaling” is discussed.

Transverse momentum distributions of λ o , λ o , and K o , produced in pp collisions at x = 0, have obtained at the CERN ISR. A measurement of the cross section of the charge-exchange reaction pp→ Δ ++ (1232)n at √ s = 23, 31 and 45 GeV at the CERN-ISR is reported. The energy dependence continues to follow a power law p lab − n with n = 1.94 ± 0.03 indicating dominance of one-pion exchange at the lowest ISR energy; there is some evidence for deviation from this at the higher ISR energies.

The Split Field Magnet facility at the CERN ISR has been used to measure inclusive resonance production in inelastic p-p collisions at a c.m. energy of 53 GeV. The mass spectrum of pairs of oppositely charged hadrons shows a strong correlation, which can be explained as a consequence of dominant vector meson production, accounting for more than 60% of all pions and kaons produced.

As a part of the study of the inclusive production of electron pairs in pp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), a search has been performed for additional photons accompanying J/ψ particles. Measurements of the cross section for the production of electron pairs with invariant masses between 4 and 8.7 GeV are presented as a function of the centre-of-mass energy ( s = 28 to s = 62 GeV ) of the colliding proton beams. A significant excess of events is observed in the region 8.7 to 10.3 GeV; these are ascribed to the ϒ(9.5 GeV) resonances and estimates of the production cross sections are given.

Proton-proton and proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been measured for incident laboratory energy from 50 to 400 GeV; minimum |t| values were, for p−p, 0.0005 (GeV/c)2, and for p−d, 0.0008 (GeV/c)2. From the differential cross sections we have determined the ratios of the real to imaginary parts of the forward scattering amplitude, ρpp and ρpd, for p−p and p−d scattering. Using a Glauber approach and a sum-of-exponentials form factor we obtain ρpn for p−n scattering.

For s = 53.1 and 62.4 GeV , the value of n found for 3.5 < p T < 7.0 GeV/ c is n = 8.0 ± 0.5, in agreement with previous experiments. We have observed e + e − hadrons at C.M. energies of 13 GeV and 17 GeV at PETRA using the TASSO detector. We find R (13 GeV) = 5.6 ± 0.7 and R (17 GeV) = 4.0 ± 0.7. The additional systematic uncertainty is 20%. Comparing inclusive charged hadron spectra we observe scaling between 5 GeV and 17 GeV for x = p / p beam > 0.2; however the 13 GeV cross section is above the 17 GeV cross section for smaller x . This may be due to copious bb̄ production. The events become increasingly jet like at high energies as evidenced by a shrinking sphericity distribution with increasing energy.

We have analyzed 1113 events of the reaction e + e − → hadrons at CM energies of 12 and 30 GeV in order to make a detailed comparison with QCD. Perturbative effects can be well separated from effects depending on the quark and gluon fragmentation parameters to yield a reliable measurement of the coupling constant α S . At 30 GeV, the result is α S = 0.17 ± 0.02 (statistical) ± 0.03 (systematic). QCD model predictions, using the fragmentation parameters determined along with α S , agree with both gross properties of the final states and with detailed features of the three-jet states.

Samples of 9200 muon-neutrino and 3800 muon-antineutrino interactions on nuclei were obtained with the fine-grain calorimeter of the CHARM Collaboration at the CERN 200 GeV narrow-band neutrino beam. The elastic and inelastic\(\bar p\)p cross sections at 70 GeV/c have been determined in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. The topological cross sections were measured and the moments of the inelastic multiplicity distribution are 〈nc〉=6.16±0.09, 〈nc〉/D=2.04±0.05 andf2cc=2.97±0.03. The average number of Dalitz pairs per inelastic event is (3.12±0.09)×10−2. Assuming that these all arise from π0 decay the average π0 multiplicity is\(\langle n_{\pi ^0 } \rangle= 2.71 \pm 0.14\).
