A precise measurement of the analyzing power $A_N$ in proton-proton elastic scattering in the region of 4-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < |t| < 0.032 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ has been performed using a polarized atomic hydrogen gas jet target and the 100 GeV/$c$ RHIC proton beam. The interference of the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude with a hadronic spin-nonflip amplitude is predicted to generate a significant $A_N$ of 4--5%, peaking at $-t \simeq 0.003 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. This kinematic region is known as the Coulomb Nuclear Interference region. A possible hadronic spin-flip amplitude modifies this otherwise calculable prediction. Our data are well described by the CNI prediction with the electromagnetic spin-flip alone and do not support the presence of a large hadronic spin-flip amplitude.
Analysing power as a function of momentum transfer T. The first DSYS error is the systematic error, the second is the normalization error on the target polarization.
The analyzing power AN of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5 × 10−3 to 5.0 × 10−2 (GeV/c)2 four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.

Results are presented on π±p, K±p, and p±p elastic scattering measured with an apparatus having acceptance of 0.5<−t<2.5 (GeV/c)2 and 0.9<−t<11 (GeV/c)2 at 100 and 200 GeV/c, respectively. A diffractionlike dip is seen for the first time in the π−p t distribution at −t=4 (GeV/c)2. All meson-proton cross sections are found to be similar in the range 1<−t<2.5 (GeV/c)2, although some small systematic differences are observed. Cross sections for pp and p―p are compared with previous data.

Differential cross sections for π − p and pp elastic scattering have been measured at incident momenta ranging from 30 to 345 GeV and in the t range 0.002 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.04 (GeV/ c ) 2 . From the analysis of the data, the ratio ϱ ( t = 0) of the real to the imaginary parts of the forward scattering amplitude was determined together with the logarithmic slope b of the diffraction cone.

The Fermilab hybrid 30-in. bubble-chamber spectrometer was exposed to a tagged 147-GeV/c positive beam containing π+, K+, and p. A sample of 3003 K+p, 19410 pp, and 20745 π+p interactions is used to derive σn, 〈n〉, f2cc, and 〈nc〉D for each beam particle. These values are compared to values obtained at other, mostly lower, beam momenta. The overall dependence of 〈n〉 on Ea, the available center-of-mass energy, for these three reactions as well as π−p and pp interactions has been determined.

The differential cross section of pp scattering has been measured in the energy region 100–300 GeV and in the t -range 0.002 < | t | < 0.04 (GeV/| c ) 2 . The results on the real part of the scattering amplitude agrees with dispersion relation calculations. We also report on our determination of the slope parameter b together with an analysis of the world data of b for different hadrons and different t -values. It is shown that the data are consistent with the hypothesis of a universal shrinkage of the hadronic diffraction cone at high energies.

The polarization of the recoil proton has been measured in both high-energy elastic and inclusive proton-proton scattering at the internal-target area of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The polarization in elastic scattering was measured at a number of center-of-mass energies up to s=19.7 GeV. Indications of negative polarization were seen at the higher center-of-mass energies for t values of -0.6, -0.8, and -1.0 (GeV/c)2. In the inclusive process p+p→p↑+X the polarization was found to be independent of beam energy from 100 to 400 GeV for xF values of -0.7, -0.8, -0.9. The polarization at PT=1.0 GeV/c, xF=−0.7 and xF=−0.8 was less than 2.5%. This is significantly lower than the corresponding measurements reported for Λ0 inclusive polarization.

Proton-proton elastic scattering using 201- and 400-GeV/c extracted beams at Fermilab has been measured in the region 4.9<−t<14.4 GeV2. Contrary to predictions of diffraction models, there is no sign of a second dip or "break," and the slope A in the fit exp(At) is smaller than predicted. It drops from 1.5 to 0.8 GeV−2 over our t range. The shape of the t distribution can be fitted by the power law dσdt∝t−8.4 which is close to a quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) prediction of t−8. At fixed t the 201-GeV/c cross sections are about 2.3 times those at 400 GeV/c which is compatible with the QCD and constituent-interchange-model prediction that dσdt∝s−10 at fixed ts.

We report on a measurement of elastic differential cross sections for p±p, π±p, and K±p at 100 and 200 GeV/c in the range 0.03<|t|<0.10 (GeV/c)2. Our data display a simple exponential dependence which is consistent with other measurements in this t region or with extrapolations from higher t.

We have measured the elastic cross section for pp, p¯p, π+p, π−p, K+p, and K−p scattering at incident momenta of 70, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 GeV/c. The range of the four-momentum transfer squared t varied with the beam momentum from 0.0016≤−t≤0.36 (GeV/c)2 at 200 GeV/c to 0.0018≤−t≤0.0625 (GeV/c)2 at 70 GeV/c. The conventional parametrization of the t dependence of the nuclear amplitude by a simple exponential in t was found to be inadequate. An excellent fit to the data was obtained by a parametrization motivated by the additive quark model. Using this parametrization we determined the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the nuclear amplitude by the Coulomb-interference method.

The polarization parameter in pp elastic scattering at 150 GeV/ c , and in the momentum transfer interval 0.4 ⩽ − t ⩽ 3.0 GeV 2 , has been measured in an MWPC and scintillation counter experiment at the CERN SPS using a polarized proton target. The polarization is decreasing steadily from zero to ≈ − 10% in the range 0.4 < − t < 1.3 GeV 2 ; for higher | t | the data suggests a change of sign. Results are also given for the differential cross section, which exhibits a small dip at − t = (1.46 ± 0.01) GeV.

Results of two studies of small angle elastic scattering are presented. The first experiment measured hadron-nucleus elastic scattering at 70, 125, 175 GeV/c incident momentum. The second experiment is a high statistics study of hadron-proton elastic scattering at 200 GeV/c incident momentum. Hadron-nucleus elastic scattering was measured for $\mu^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ scatterinq from Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb targets at .incident beam momenta of 70 and 175 GeV/c and for $\mu^+$, $K^+$, and $p$ scattering from Be, Al, and Pb targets at an incident beam momentum of 125 GeV/c. In all cases the minimum -t is 0.001 $(GeV/c)^2$ ; the maximum -t is 0.07, 0.16. 0.30 ($GeV/c)^2$ for incident beam momenta of 70, 125, 175 GeV/c respectively. We have measured π+p, π−p, and pp elastic scattering at an incident-beam momentum of 200 GeV/c in the region of −t, four-momentum transfer squared, from 0.021 to 0.665 (GeV/c)2. The data allow an investigation of the t dependence of the logarithmic forward slope parameter b≡(ddt)(lndσdt). In addition to standard parametrization, we use functional forms suggested by the additive quark model to fit the measured dσdt distributions. Within the context of this model we estimate the size of the clothed quark in the pion and proton. Limits on the elastic-scattering amplitude derived from unitarity bounds are checked, and no violations are observed.

Proton-proton and proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been measured for incident laboratory energy from 50 to 400 GeV; minimum |t| values were, for p−p, 0.0005 (GeV/c)2, and for p−d, 0.0008 (GeV/c)2. From the differential cross sections we have determined the ratios of the real to imaginary parts of the forward scattering amplitude, ρpp and ρpd, for p−p and p−d scattering. Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured in the region 4.9<|t|<12.1 GeV2 at a beam momentum of 201 GeV/c. The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

We present results of complete measurements of the two-prong events observed in a 50 000-picture exposure of the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205−GeVc proton beam at the National Accelerator Laboratory. Using kinematic fitting, elastic and inelastic events are separated and cross sections are obtained. The total two-prong cross section is measured to be 9.77 ± 0.40 mb, of which 2.85 ± 0.26 mb represents the inelastic contribution. The total elastic cross section is measured to be 6.92 ± 0.44 mb. Our data are consistent with the break in dσdt at |t|∼0.1−0.2 (GeVc)2 observed at the CERN ISR. A prominent low-mass enhancement is observed in the distribution of missing mass squared from the slow proton for the inelastic events. An analysis based on the missing-mass spectrum and the particle rapidities shows that this low-mass enhancement accounts for about 77% of the total inelastic two-prong cross section. The diffractive cross section in the two-prong events is 2.20 ± 0.25 mb, in agreement with certain two-component models.
