THE study of elastic scattering at high energies in the region of the diffraction maximum has gained in interest recently in connection with the verifica- tion of the asymptotic expressions obtained by cal- culating the Regge-pole trajectories. We have in- vestigated the elastic scattering of 3. 5- Be VIc 7r- mesons by protons. The measurements were made with the aid of a liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber 25 em in diameter, placed in a 14 kOe magnetic field.

The dissociation of virtual photons, $\gamma^{\star} p \to X p$, in events with a large rapidity gap between $X$ and the outgoing proton, as well as in events in which the leading proton was directly measured, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities $Q^2>2$ GeV$^2$ and $\gamma^{\star} p$ centre-of-mass energies $40<W<240$ GeV, with $M_X>2$ GeV, where $M_X$ is the mass of the hadronic final state, $X$. Leading protons were detected in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer. The cross section is presented as a function of $t$, the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and $\Phi$, the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and the proton scattering plane. It is also shown as a function of $Q^2$ and $\xpom$, the fraction of the proton's momentum carried by the diffractive exchange, as well as $\beta$, the Bjorken variable defined with respect to the diffractive exchange.

Results on charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A and 30A GeV are presented and compared to data at lower and higher energies. A rapid change of the energy dependence is observed around 30A GeV for the yields of pions and kaons as well as for the shape of the transverse mass spectra. The change is compatible with the prediction that the threshold for production of a state of deconfined matter at the early stage of the collisions is located at low SPS energies.

We studied the exclusive reaction e p --> e' p' phi using the phi --> K^+ K^- decay mode. The data were collected using a 4.2 GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. Our experiment covers the range in Q^2 from 0.7 to 2.2 GeV^2, and W from 2.0 to 2.6 GeV. Taken together with all previous data, we find a consistent picture of phi production on the proton. Our measurement shows the expected decrease of the t-slope with the vector meson formation time c Delta tau below 2 fm. At = 0.6 fm, we measure b_phi = 2.27 +- 0.42 GeV^-2. The cross section dependence on W as W^{0.2+-0.1} at Q^2 = 1.3 GeV^2 was determined by comparison with phi production at HERA after correcting for threshold effects. This is the same dependence as observed in photoproduction.

Data of the ηπ − system were obtained in the reaction π − p → ηπ − p at 6.3 GeV/ c beam momentum. About 17 k events of ηπ − were collected in the mass range 0.8 ⩽ M ηπ - ⩽ 1.8 GeV/ c 2 and in the range of the momentum transfer squared 0.075 ⩽ | t ′| ⩽ 0.60 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A large forward-backward asymmetry was observed around 1.3 GeV/ c 2 in the Gottfried-Jackson frame of the ηπ − system. A partial wave analysis of the data was performed. A peak of the D + wave attributed to a 2 (1320) is clearly seen. An enhancement is observed around 1.3 GeV/ c 2 in the P + wave.

The PS185 experiment at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) has studied the reaction p ̄ p → \ ̄ gLΛ at several momenta. In this paper results from two runs with high statistics at 1.546 GeV/ c and 1.695 GeV/ c are described. Based on 4063 and 11362 analysed events, respectively, differential and integrated cross sections, polarizations and spin correlations are presented. The singlet fraction, extracted from the spin correlations, is consistent with zero at both momenta, showing that the \ ̄ gLΛ pairs are produced in a pure triplet state. A comparison of the decay asymmetry parameters of Λ and \ ̄ gL reduces the upper limits for the violation of the CP invariance for this system.

We present results of a hybrid-bubble-chamber experiment examining the reaction π+p→π+pK+K− at an incident momentum of 11.46 GeV/c. The total cross section for this channel is determined to be 87.2±6.4 μb. A partial-wave analysis of the K+π+K− system reveals no unambiguous evidence of resonant activity, although mass enhancements are noted in the JP=0− κ¯K+ (S wave), JP=2− fπ (S wave), and JP=2−, K¯*0(892)K+ (P wave). This is the first published report of the relative phases of the waves seen in this reaction. We comment on the influence this channel may have on A1 and A3 production.

The cross sections exhibit a forward peak followed by a monotone fall-off up to the largest measured |t|-values. Fits of the formdσ/dt=A·exp(Bt) to the data points with |t|≦0.5 GeV2 yield forward cross sectionsA, which are consistent with the 0° cross sections calculated from the measured total photon-proton cross section. Results of a high-statistics study of elastic scattering and meson resonances produced by π−p interactions at 8 GeV/c are presented. Large statistics and small systematic errors permit examination of the complete kinematic region. Total differential cross sections are given for ρ0,−, f0, g0,−, Δ±, Δ0, and N* resonances. Spin-density matrix elements and Legendre-polynomial moments are given for ρ, f, and Δ resonances. The results for ρ0 and f0 resonances are compared with the predictions of a Regge-pole-exchange model. Properties of the above resonances are compared and discussed. In particular, we present evidence that the ρ0 and f0 production mechanisms are similar. The similarity of the g0 t distribution to that of the ρ0 and f0 suggests a common production mechanism for all three resonances.

Results from a high-statistics experiment involving an exposure of the SLAC 82-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a beam of 8-GeV/c π− yielding a final state of π−π+π−p are presented. Some double-resonance production involving baryon and meson resonances is also seen. The production properties of ρ, Δ++, and f mesons are well described by a double-Regge model.

The construction of a K L 0 beam for the CERN 2 m hydrogen bubble chamber and the derivation of the beam momentum spectrum are described. Cross sections are presented for the reaction K L 0 +p → K S 0 + π + + π − +p for K L 0 momenta up to 17 GeV/ c . The reacti is seen to be dominated, particularly at the highest momenta, where there are no previous data, by the production of the Q 0 - Q 0 system. The shapes of the t -distributions for Q 0 and Q 0 prodcution are found to be different in a sense opposite to that expected from the pion-exchange Deck model. A model in which the observed effect is ascribed to the addition of a K ∗ exchange Deck graph is found to be incompatible with the data. The data are, however, consistent with a model in which the Q 0 - Q 0 system is largely resonant and the sense of the cross-over is determined by the s -channel quantum numbers.

Two (Δ(1238)ππ) enhancements at 1.93 and 2.12 GeV have been observed in an analysis of the invariant-mass spectra of Δ++(1238)π-π0 and Δ++(1238)π-π- from π-p→π-pπ+π-π0 events in 4.5 GeV/c π-p interactions. An enhancement at 2.2 GeV is also seen with a dominant branching to the Δ(1238)ρ system. The 1.93 and 2.12 enhancements seem to be produced mainly through a ρ-meson exchange process. The 2.2 GeV enhancement seems to be produced diffractively and is considered to correspond to theG17(2190) state.

An energy dependence study of the quasi two-body reactions Σ − (1385) + vector meson and ΛB − seem to imply the presence of cuts in the Regge exchange formalism, whereas the reaction Δ(1236) K ∗ (890) does not require such cuts. Upper limits of 1 and 2 μb are found for the reactions K − n → Λ A 1 and K − n → Λ A 2 .
CROSS SECTIONS ARE CORRECTED FOR ALL RESONANCE DECAY MODES EXCEPT FOR K*- DEL0 PRODUCTION WHICH IS ONLY CORRECTED FOR UNSEEN AK0 DECAYS. NO EVIDENCE FOR NON-DIFFRACTIVE A1 AND A2 PRODUCTION.
MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD EXPONENTIAL FITS TO DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTIONS.
Final states produced by charged baryon exchange in π − p interactions at 12 GeV/ c laboratory momentum have been studied. Forward neutrons with momenta determined by a calorimeter to be greater than 8.5 ± 1.4 GeV/ c triggered the SLAC 40-inch hydrogen bubble chamber which operated at a 10 Hz expansion rate. We report data on the reactions π − p→n π − π + , π − p→n π − π + π 0 , and π − p→n π − π − π + π + . In π − n π − p→n π + , production of ϱ and f mesons is observed. Differential cross sections are derived and compared with data at lower incident momentum and with theoretical models. In π − p→n π − π + π 0 , ω production is observed with a differential cross section having a deep near u ′= 0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . In π − p→n π − π − π + π + , Δ − , ϱ and f production is observed . The observed mass distributions appear to indicate the production of wide resonaces decaying into ϱππ. Some evidence for ϱ-ω interference is also observed.

CORRECTED FOR BACKGROUND.
Results on backward (3 π ) - system produced in π - p→p f π + π - π - reaction at 9 and 12 GeV/ c are given. The ϱ 0 π - mass spectra show two clear signals at 1050 MeV (A 1 region) and 1303 MeV (A - 2 ). The width of the enhancement in the A 1 region (195±32 MeV) is narrower than found in diffractive experiments. Total backward cross sections for those signals are of the same order of magnitude (∼0.5 μb).
