From a study of peripheral interactions wherein a negative pion of 12 or 18 GeV/c incident on a nucleon produced a pair of high-momentum pions, the pion-pion s-wave interaction was deduced. Normalizing to to the ϱo production cross sections, a pion-pion cross section falling smoothly from 50 mb (300 MeV) to 20 mb (600 MeV) is observed. The forward-backward asymmetry is negative for low dipion masses.

The preliminary results of an investigation of a system of two K S mesons in the mass interval 1600–1950 MeV are reported. The events were obtained on a 6-m magnetic spark spectrometer at ITEP in π − p interactions at 40 GeV, using a neutral trigger which suppressed both charged particles and γ rays. A peak of width ≃30 MeV with statistical significance not lower than six standard deviations is observed with momentum transfer selection |tu|0.23 GeV2 near the mass 1775 MeV of the K S K S system. The observed phenomena can be interpreted as the existence of one resonance with the indicated parameters, or two narrower resonances. In the latter case, their masses are 1768±1.5 and 1787±1.5 MeV. The widths of these states are comparable to the mass resolution of the spectrometer (∼5 MeV). Estimates of the product σ ⋅BR(K S K S ) give ∼1.5 and 2.5 nb, respectively, for the first and second states.

We report on measurements of the differential π±p cross section at pion energies Tπ=32.7, 45.1, and 68.6 MeV. The measurements, covering the angular range 25°≤θlab≤123°, have been carried out at the Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, employing the magnet spectrometer LEPS. The absolute normalization of the π±p cross sections have been achieved by relating them to the electromagnetic cross sections of μ±12C scattering. The results are in agreement with those of our preceding measurements at Tπ=32.2 and 45.1 MeV insofar as they overlap with the region of the Coulomb nuclear interference investigated there. A comparison with the predictions of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase shift analysis KH80, which has formed the basis for the determination of the ‘‘experimental’’ σ term, reveals considerable deviations. These are most pronounced for the π+p cross sections at Tπ=32.7 and 45.1 MeV. Single energy partial wave fits result in S-wave contributions, which are about 1° lower in magnitude then those specified by the KH80 solution. The data at 68.6 MeV are in good agreement with the phase shift analysis.

Low-energy differential cross-sections of pion proton (pi+- p) scattering. 1: The Isospin even forward scattering amplitude at T(pi) = 32.2-MeV and 44.6-MeV

The values of the pion nucleon (πN) σ term, as determined, on the one hand, from experimental pion nucleon scattering by means of dispersion relations and, on the other hand, from baryon masses by means of chiral perturbation theory, differ by 10 to 15 MeV. The origin of this discrepancy is not yet understood. If the difference between the two values is attributed to the scalar current of strange sea quark pairs within the proton, the contribution to the proton mass would be of the order of 120 MeV. The discrepancy may hint at either theoretical deficiencies or an inadequate πN database. In order to provide reliable experimental data we have measured angular distributions of elastic pion proton scattering at pion energies Tπ=32.2 and 44.6 MeV using the magnet spectrometer LEPS located at the Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland. From the data covering the region of the Coulomb nuclear interference, the real parts of the isospin-even forward scattering amplitude ReD+(t=0), have been determined as a function of energy. The results have been compared with the predictions of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase shift analysis KH80, revealing discrepancies most pronounced for the π+p data. The experimentally determined values for ReD+(t=0), however, support the KH80 prediction (which is based on πN data available in 1979).

In a new experiment we have obtained 3006 new events in the reaction π − p → φφ n, approximately doubling the statistics which now total 6658. A refined partial wave analysis of the φφ system again reveals three resonances (g T , g T′ , g T′' ) with I G J PC =0 + 2 ++ . The absence of the OZI suppression, and the observation of only three J PC =2 ++ states (g T , g T′ , g T′' ) which comprise virtually all the cross section are unusual characteristics of the data. The large φφn signal occurs over a mostly structureless and incoherent φK + K − n background. All these unusual characteristics are well explained if these states are produced by 1–3 glueballs (multigluon resonances).

We present data on 3652 analyzed events of the reaction π - p → φφn at 22 GeV/ c . A partial wave analysis has been performed on the φφ system. The results are well represented by three resonances all with quantum numbers I G J PC = 0 + 2 ++ . The absence of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppression observed in this reaction, the selection of only three J PC =2 ++ states ( g T , g T′ , and g T ″ ) which comprise virtually all of the cross section, and the large φφn signal over a very different φK + K - n background are all well explained if these states are produced by 1–3 glueballs (i.e. multigluon resonances).

We present the results of an experiment to search for associated charm production near threshold in 13-GeV/c π−p interactions. A large aperture PWC spectrometer was sensitive to the decay fragments of the forward-produced D*−’s expected from the two-body reactions π−+p→D*−+Λc+,Σc +,. . . . The missing baryon mass was determined from the vector momenta of the incident pion and the candidate D*−. No evidence for these reactions was found, which resulted in a 7-nb upper limit (95% confidence level) for each of the cross sections σ(π−p→D*−Λc+) and σ(π−p→D*−Σc+).

PRODUCTION OF THE anti-K*0 (890) RESONANCE IN pi+ p INTERACTIONS AT 16-GeV/c

The inclusive process π++P→K¯ *0(890)+X is studied at 16 GeV/c using a 2-m streamer chamber containing a central liquid hydrogen target. From photographs triggered by detection of a forward K− meson, the signal K¯ K−*0π+ is extracted. The inclusive rate for K¯ * production into the forward hemisphere σ(xF>0.3) is 115±27 μb; the pT2 distribution is found to have a slope constant of 3.3±0.6 (GeV/c)2. The Feynman-x distribution for K¯ *0 is consistent with a Kuti-Weisskopf model in which the valence and sea quarks of the incident pion interact with only the sea quarks of the target proton.

Results are presented from experiment WA7 at the CERN SPS, which has measured the elastic differential cross sections of π ± p, K ± p, p p and pp at incident momen ta of 20, 30 and 50 GeV/ c . The measurements cover the momentum transfer range 0.5 < | t | < 8 (GeV/ c ) 2 , corresponding to c.m. scattering angles between 10° and 50°. The experimental set-up, trigger logic and data analysis are described. The experimental results are compared with existing meson-proton and nucleon-proton data at lower and higher energies covering the medium- and large-| t | region. Some prominent models and their predictions for elastic scattering at WA7 energies and beyond are reviewed, with emphasis on geometrical scaling, factorizing eikonal models, lowest-order QCD and other dynamical exchange-type models. Results for p p two-body annihilation into π − π + and K − K + at 30 and 50 GeV/ c , obtained in parallel with the elastic p p data, are also presented.

We present the first results on the production of fast (p>10 GeV/c)p,\(\bar p\), Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) from π± hydrogen and nucleus interactions at 30 GeV/c using the CERN Ω′ spectrometer. We have used five nuclear targets (C, Al, Cu, Sn, Pb) to study theA-dependence of the inclusive particle distributions in the region 0.3<xF<0.6. The high statistical level of our experiment allows us to demonstrate the differentA-behaviour of baryon and antibaryon inclusive reactions. We relate this difference to the final state interaction inside a nucleus using the formation-zone model.

STUDY OF K*- (890) AND K*- (1430) PRODUCTION IN THE REACTION K- P ---> ANTI-K0 PI- P AT 100-GEV/C AND 175-GEV/C

The reaction K−p→K¯0π−p has been studied at 100 and 175 GeV/c and the reaction π−p→K0K−p at 50, 100, and 175 GeV/c. Both reactions are dominated by production of resonances, K*(890), K*(1430) and A2(1320), A2(2040), respectively. Production cross sections, t distributions, and decay-angular distributions are studied. Isoscalar natural-parity exchange is dominant. The energy dependence of the K* and A2 resonance production between 10 and 175 GeV/c is well described by a Regge-pole model. Our data on A2 corrects that in an earlier paper.

Using a double arm electromagnetic calorimeter we have searched for narrow states produced in the exclusive reaction π − p→γγn at 13 GeV/c. No enhancements were observed in the mass range 2.0–4.0 GeV/c 2 . For example, the 90% confidence limit on η c production is σ ( π − p→ η c n)× B ( η c → γγ ) < 44 pb.

η′η pair production in the charge exchange reaction π−p→η′ηn has been observed and studied in a search for glueballs with the 38 GeV/c pion beam of the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The γ-rays from the decay η′η→4γ were detected with the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The η′η events in the mass range from threshold up to 1.8 GeV are decays of the scalar G(1590)-meson which has been already observed in its ηη decay mode. The measured ratio of the partial widths of the G→η′η and the G → ηη decay channels is 2.7±0.8 in agreement with the value expected for glueballs.
