The production of Λ hyperons in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of their total momenta, transverse momenta, and the event thrust. The total production rate is 0.213±0.012±0.018 Λ or Λ¯ per hadronic event. The observation of correlations in rapidity and angles for events with two detected Λ decays supports fragmentation models with local baryon-number compensation.

We have studied inclusive KS, Λ, and Λ¯ photoproduction over the ranges 40<Eγ<170 GeV and forward produced mass 2<MF<10 GeV. We observe equal Λ and Λ¯ production rates and spectra as expected in a diffractive process where the target proton remains unaltered. We show that the fraction of hadronic events with a strange particle produced in events with forward mass MF agrees well with the same measurement in e+e− annihilation at a center-of-mass energy Ec.m.=MF. The x=2PMF distributions of these three particles in the forward-mass rest frame are compared with theoretical predictions.

This Letter reports a search for the production by e+e− annihilation of a single photon accompanied by particles that interact only weakly in matter. The search was performed at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP (√s =29 GeV) with a new detector, ASP. No unexpected signal was observed. The limit Nν<14 (90% C.L.) is placed on the number of light neutrino species, and the mass of scalar electrons predicted by theories of supersymmetry is constrained to mẽ>51 GeV/c2 (90% C.L.) for mγ̃=0 and degenerate ẽ mass states.

The total hadronic cross section for virtual photon-photon interactions is reported for center-of-mass energy, W, between 2 and 20 GeV. The data were obtained via the process e+e−→e+e−γ*γ*→e e−++hadrons with both scattered e+ and e− detected. Each photon’s four-momentum squared, q2, ranges from -0.1 to -1.6 GeV2. Dependence upon q2 agrees with a generalized vector-meson-dominance model. The total cross section shows little W dependence, averaging 125 nb at q12=q22=-0.3. Photon helicity interference terms are determined.

The production of the tensor mesons f0(1270) and K*0(1430) and the scalar meson S(975) has been observed in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy by use of data obtained with the high-resolution spectrometer at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. The mean multiplicities for meson momenta greater than 1450 MeV/c are 〈nf0〉=0.11±0.04, 〈nK*0(1430)〉=0.10±0.06, and 〈nS〉=0.05±0.02 per hadronic event. The fragmentation functions of the tensor mesons are in good agreement with the predictions of the Webber cluster model. The data are consistent with a predominant strange-quark content on the S meson.

The charmonium χ states are observed in both π− and p Be interactions near 200 GeV/c via their radiative decay into J/ψ. The χ(3510) and χ(3555) are produced with roughly equal cross sections in π− collisions while the χ(3555) dominates in p collisions. Simple gluon fusion can account for χ production with incident protons but additional mechanisms are needed for incident π−.

We report a measurement of the inclusive charged-particle distribution for gluon jets derived from nearly threefold-symmetric three-jet events taken at center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV in e+e− annihilation. The charged-particle spectrum for these jets is observed to fall off more rapidly than those of quark jets of the same energy.
Errors include both statistics and the uncertainty in correction factors. X is defined at the energy of the individual particle divided by the total energy of the jet to which it is assigned.

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries $A^n_1$ and $A^n_2$ have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized $^3$He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66 and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions $g^n_1 (x,Q^2)$ and $g^n_2(x,Q^2)$ over the range $0.03 < x < 0.6$ at an average $Q^2$ of 2 (GeV$/c)^2$. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function $g^n_1 (x,Q^2)$ is small and negative within the range of our measurement, yielding an integral ${\int_{0.03}^{0.6} g_1^n(x) dx}= -0.028 \pm 0.006 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) $. Assuming Regge behavior at low $x$, we extract $\Gamma_1^n=\int^1_0 g^n_1(x)dx = -0.031 \pm 0.006 (stat)\pm 0.009 (syst) $. Combined with previous proton integral results from SLAC experiment E143, we find $\Gamma_1^p - \Gamma_1^n = 0.160 \pm 0.015$ in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction $\Gamma^p_1 - \Gamma ^n_1 = 0.176 \pm 0.008$ at a $Q^2$ value of 3 (GeV$/c)^2$ evaluated using $\alpha_s = 0.32\pm 0.05$.

Using data from the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP, a C=+1 resonance has been observed in the π+π−π0γ final state resulting from the fusion of one nearly real and one quite virtual photon. The actual decay channel is probably π+π−π0π0, where one final-state photon is not detected, and the mass of the fully reconstructed state would be approximately 1525 MeV. A four-pion decay mode in turn implies that the resonance has even isospin. The nonobservation of this R(1525) when both initial-state photons are nearly real suggests a spin-1 assignment. Since the large measured value of the product of the branching ratio into π+π−π0π0 and the γγ coupling makes it unlikely that this state is the mostly s¯s f1(1510), its interpretation may lie outside of conventional meson spectroscopy. There is a second, less-significant enhancement observed in the same reaction at a four-pion mass centered around 2020 MeV.

Flavor separation on the basis of lifetime and decay multiplicity differences among hadrons containing light, $c$, and $b$ quarks was made using the SLD precision tracking system. We find: $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{uds}/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 0.987 \pm 0.027({\rm stat}) \pm 0.022({\rm syst}) \pm 0.022({\rm theory})$, $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~c/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 1.012 \pm 0.104 \pm 0.102 \pm 0.096$, and $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~b/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 1.026 \pm 0.041 \pm 0.041\pm 0.030.$

Using 773 muons found in hadronic events from 142 pb−1 of data at a c.m. energy of 57.8 GeV, we extract the cross section and forward-backward charge asymmetry for the e+e−→bb¯ process, and the heavy quark fragmentation function parameters for the Peterson model. For the analysis of the e+e−→bb¯ process, we use a method in which the behavior of the c quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that of the b quark left indeterminate. The cross section and asymmetry for e+e−→bb¯ are found to be Rb = 0.57 ± 0.06(stat) ± 0.08(syst) and Ab = −0.59 ± 0.09 ± 0.09, respectively. They are consistent with the standard model predictions. For the study of the fragmentation function we use the variable 〈xE〉, the fraction of the beam energy carried by the heavy hadrons. We obtain 〈xE〉c=0.56−0.05−0.03+0.04+0.03 and 〈xE〉b=0.65−0.04−0.06+0.06+0.05, respectively. These are in good agreement with previously measured values.

The analyzing power AN of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5 × 10−3 to 5.0 × 10−2 (GeV/c)2 four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.

The strong coupling alpha_s(M_Z^2) has been measured using hadronic decays of Z^0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data were compared with QCD predictions both at fixed order, O(alpha_s^2), and including resummed analytic formulae based on the next-to-leading logarithm approximation. In this comprehensive analysis we studied event shapes, jet rates, particle correlations, and angular energy flow, and checked the consistency between alpha_s(M_Z^2) values extracted from these different measures. Combining all results we obtain alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1200 \pm 0.0025(exp.) \pm 0.0078(theor.), where the dominant uncertainty is from uncalculated higher order contributions.

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of Λ hyperons in electron-positron annihilations at s=29 GeV based on the full 291-pb−1 sample of data taken in the High Resolution Spectrometer experiment at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. These results, and the associated correlation analyses, are consistent with the Lund model predictions with the strange diquark suppression ratio δ fixed at 0.59±0.10±0.18, as compared to the standard Lund value of 0.32. The Λ multiplicity has been found to be 0.182±0.020 per event. The opposite-strangeness multiplicity 〈nΛΛ¯〉 has been measured to be 0.046±0.020, whereas the like-strangeness multiplicity 〈nΛΛ+Λ¯Λ¯〉 is 0.009±0.028. The distributions of quarks in the pion and nucleon are extracted from measurements of the reaction π−N→μ+μ−X at 253 GeV/c in a naive Drell-Yan analysis, as well as QCD-corrected analyses at leading-log and next-to-leading-log order. As xπ→1 the pion structure function shows a term that varies as 1mμμ4, which we interpret as a higher-twist effect. Additionally, the angular distribution of the μ+ in the muon-pair rest frame tends towards sin2θ as xπ→1 and as mμμ→0 in a manner consistent with higher-twist effects. When the strongly mass-dependent higher-twist effects are included as part of the pion structure function, the nucleon structure function agrees well with leading-twist results from deeply inelastic lepton-hadron scattering. A significant advance of the present work is the extension of the analysis to low masses by the subtraction of the Jψ and ψ′ resonances from the continuum. Our analysis covers the kinematic range 0.4<xπ<1.0 and 0.02<xN<0.33 with 3.0<mμμ<8.55 GeV/c2. Cross sections for ψ′ production are presented in an appendix.

We report measurements of the ratios K+π+, pπ+, K−π−, p¯π−, π−π+, K−K+, and p¯p for hadrons with 0.19<xt<0.62 produced in p−Be and p−W collisions at s=38.8 GeV. The K+π+ ratio at high xt gives the fragmentation-function ratio DuK+Duπ+ at high z. The high-xt K−π− ratio gives an upper limit for DdK−Ddπ− at high z. The pt dependence of pπ+ suggests that scattered constituent diquarks are the primary source of protons with pt<6 GeV/c. We also present species correlations in high-mass h+h− pairs. We report on a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e+e−→qq¯ at KEK TRISTAN, where the asymmetry is near maximum. We sum over all flavors and measure the asymmetry by determining the charge of the quark jets. We present results of complete measurements of the two-prong events observed in a 50 000-picture exposure of the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205−GeVc proton beam at the National Accelerator Laboratory. Using kinematic fitting, elastic and inelastic events are separated and cross sections are obtained. The total two-prong cross section is measured to be 9.77 ± 0.40 mb, of which 2.85 ± 0.26 mb represents the inelastic contribution. The total elastic cross section is measured to be 6.92 ± 0.44 mb. Our data are consistent with the break in dσdt at |t|∼0.1−0.2 (GeVc)2 observed at the CERN ISR. A prominent low-mass enhancement is observed in the distribution of missing mass squared from the slow proton for the inelastic events. An analysis based on the missing-mass spectrum and the particle rapidities shows that this low-mass enhancement accounts for about 77% of the total inelastic two-prong cross section. The diffractive cross section in the two-prong events is 2.20 ± 0.25 mb, in agreement with certain two-component models.

We present the xF and pT differential cross sections of J/ψ and ψ′, respectively, in the ranges −0.05<xF<0.25 and pT<3.5 GeV/c. The data samples are constituted by about 12 000 J/ψ and 200 ψ′ produced in proton-silicon interactions at 800 GeV/c and decaying into opposite sign muons. The measured shapes of the differential cross sections, except for the dσ/dxF at small xF, agree very well with the prediction, even though their value is quite a bit larger than the prediction. Many tests of systematic effects were investigated and are described, and a comparison to theoretical predictions is also given. Measurements of parity nonconservation at 200 GeV/c in proton scattering and the first ever of antiproton scattering have also been derived from these data. The values are consistent with zero at the 10−5 level.

We have compared a new QCD calculation by Clay and Ellis of energy-energy correlations (EEC’s) and their asymmetry (AEEC’s) in e+e− annihilation into hadrons with data collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. From fits of the new calculation, complete at O(αs2), we obtained αs(MZ2)=0.1184±0.0031(expt)±0.0129(theory) (EEC) and αs(MZ2)=0.1120±0.0034(expt)±0.0036(theory) (AEEC). The EEC result is significantly lower than that obtained from comparable fits using the O(αs2) calculation of Kunszt and Nason.
The data are compared to the predictions of Monte-Carlo. Two values of ALPHA_S are corresponded the two theoretical models used in the comparison.
Measurements of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 \rm{GeV/c} proton beam incident on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets are reported. Approximately 360,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs remained after all cuts on the data. From these data, the ratio of anti-down ($\bar{d}$) to anti-up ($\bar{u}$) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-$x$. These results confirm previous measurements by E866 and extend them to lower $x$. From these data, $(\bar{d}-\bar{u})$ and $\int(\bar{d}-\bar{u})dx$ are evaluated for $0.015<x<0.35$. These results are compared with parameterizations of various parton distribution functions, models and experimental results from NA51, NMC, and HERMES.

We report on measurements of the differential π±p cross section at pion energies Tπ=32.7, 45.1, and 68.6 MeV. The measurements, covering the angular range 25°≤θlab≤123°, have been carried out at the Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, employing the magnet spectrometer LEPS. The absolute normalization of the π±p cross sections have been achieved by relating them to the electromagnetic cross sections of μ±12C scattering. The results are in agreement with those of our preceding measurements at Tπ=32.2 and 45.1 MeV insofar as they overlap with the region of the Coulomb nuclear interference investigated there. A comparison with the predictions of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase shift analysis KH80, which has formed the basis for the determination of the ‘‘experimental’’ σ term, reveals considerable deviations. These are most pronounced for the π+p cross sections at Tπ=32.7 and 45.1 MeV. Single energy partial wave fits result in S-wave contributions, which are about 1° lower in magnitude then those specified by the KH80 solution. The data at 68.6 MeV are in good agreement with the phase shift analysis.

In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.

Angular distributions of the analyzing powers for π+p→ and π−p→ elastic scattering have been measured in a single-scattering experiment employing a polarized proton target. Measurements were obtained for pion energies of 98, 139, 166, 215, and 263 MeV. The addition of these data to the existing πp database significantly reduces the uncertainties in all S and P phase shifts for πp reactions over the delta resonance.

The importance of two-photon exchange in elastic electron-proton scattering was investigated by measuring the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton scattering. Four-momentum transfers as large as 0.756 (BeV/c)2 (19.5 F−2) were used. The data indicate that two-photon effects are (4.0±1.5)% larger than those predicted by the radiative corrections at the highest momentum transfers attained in these experiments. The two-photon corrections predicted using a static charge distribution fit the data well at lower momentum transfers and forward angles, but appear to be small at higher momentum transfers and backward angles.
