The differential cross section in the very forward direction has been measured for K − and K + scattering (break-up and coherent) on a deuterium target at an incident momentum of 10 GeV/ c . From these measurements and using a model for the scattering and re-scattering effects in deuterium, we have exploited the Coulomb-nuclear interference to deduce the real part of the K ± n scattering amplitude at a momentum transfer t = 0. The measurements are the first ever obtained for the K + n reaction and the first at this energy for the K − n reaction. A comparison has been made between our results and those predicted from dispersion relations. A new dispersion-relation fit including all the existing K ± n values at different energies has been performed.

As a partial result of an analysis of K + d interactions at 3 GeV/ c produced in the 81 cm Saclay bubble chamber, we present data on K + differential cross sections for the following reactions: K + d → K + d, K + d → K + pn, K + d → K 0 pp . A set of parameters describing the K + n elastic scattering has been obtained from a simulataneous fit, based on the Glauber model. to the three experimental differential cross sections and to the K + d total cross section, giving α n = 1.7 ± 0.5 GeV −2 for the slope α n of the differential cross section, and ρ n = −0.16 ± 0.3 for the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude. The D-wave function of the deuteron has been found to give a non-negligible contribution to the coherent reaction.

The differential cross sections for K+d coherent, breakup, and charge-exchange scattering have been measured at several momenta in the interval 250-600 MeV/c. The data have been fitted using a partial-wave analysis. Assuming an s-wave description of I=1 scattering and using data from the coherent and charge-exchange channels, a description of I=0 K+−N scattering by a combination of s and p waves in a simple single-scattering impulse model has been attempted. The phase shifts obtained are unique up to the Fermi-Yang ambiguity, which can be removed by using existing polarization results at 600 MeV/c.

Measurements of the differential cross section for the coherent elastic scattering process K+d→K+d are presented at four momenta from 600 MeV/c to 890 MeV/c for 0.03<|t|<0.25 (GeV/c)2. Comparisons are made with previous work and with predictions from partial-wave analyses.

Elastic and charge-exchange K + n differential cross sections have been measured from K + d interactions from 430 to 940 MeV/ c using spark chambers and scintillation counters. The data have been compared with existing results and in an accompanying paper have been included with other measurements in a phase-shift analysis.

Data are presented at 13 momenta between 0.64 and 1.51 GeV/ c for the coherent processes K + d → K + d, K + d→ K 0 d π + and K + d → K + d π + π − . Distributions for K + d elastic scattering are given in the (0.03<| t |<0.22) (GeV/ c ) 2 range.

K+p and K+d total cross sections were measured in the momentum range 0.57-1.16 GeV/c using a secondary, separated kaon beam of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Bevatron and conventional transmission-counter techniques. No evidence was found for structure in the cross section of either reaction as previously indicated near 0.7 GeV/c.

The coherent elastic reaction K + d → K + d and the break-up reaction K + d → K + pn are studied in a K + d experiment at 4.6 GeV/ c which the CERN 2 m bubble chamber. Partial and differential cross sections are given and the slopes of the differential cross sections are determined. The results for the reaction K + d → K + p(n s ), where n s denotes the spectator neutron, are compared with those of the reaction K + p → K + p on free protons. Combining our data with existing data on the reactions K + d → K 0 pp and K + p → K + p, parameters of the elastic K + -nucleon scattering at 4.6 GeV/ c are determined in the framework of the Glauber model. The D-wave of the deuteron and spin-flip effects are taken into account.
