We present measurements of the differential and total cross sections and the Λ polarization for the reaction K−p→ηΛ from threshold to pK−=770MeV/c, with much better precision than previous measurements. Our cross-section data show a remarkable similarity to the SU(3) flavor-related π−p→ηn cross-section results. The reaction K−p→ηΛ at threshold is dominated by formation of the intermediate Λ(1670)12− state.

We report on the results of a partial-wave analysis of the 3π system produced by baryon exchange in the reaction K − p→ Σ − π + π + π − at 4.2 GeV/ c . We confirm the existence of an enhancement in the 1 + S( ϱπ ) wave as previously established from a Dalitz plot analysis of the same data. The phase variation of this wave is found to be consistent with that expected for a resonance and thus the enhancement is identified with A 1 production. No clear signal for this state is found in either the reaction K − p→ Σ + π + π + π − π − or K − p→ Λπ + π − π 0 . We also find production via baryon exchange of the A 2 in all three reactions and the ω and ω ∗ (1975) in the third reaction.

The K − p reactions with final states Λπ 0 , Σ 0 π 0 , Λπ 0 π 0 , Λη and Σ 0 η have been studied at 14 momenta between 685 and 934 MeV/ c using optical spark chambers. The charged decay products of the Λ are detected by low mass spark chambers while γ-rays from π 0 and Σ 0 decays are detected in high mass chambers. Approximately 250 000 photographs were analysed from which partial and differential cross sections were determined. These results are presented with an energy dependent, single channel partial-wave analysis.

The production of η(550) and ω(780) mesons is studied in π ± p interactions at 16 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . Cross sections for exclusive channels are presented, and for the π + p data differential cross sections are given for quasi-inclusive production where the η or ω is required to be accompanied by charged particles only. Close similarities are observed between η, ω and also ϱ 0 (770) production in terms of longitudinal and transverse variables. By a rough estimate, the η, ω and ϱ 0 inclusive yields are found to be in the ratio 0.32 : 0.85 : 1, respectively, for 16 GeV/ c π + p collisions. For non-peripheral production we estimate this same ratio to be 0.34 : 0.9 : 1.

The K − p reactions leading to charge exchange and hyperon final states have been studied at nine momenta between 862 and 1001 MeV/ c using data from a 600 000 picture exposure of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory 25″ liquid hydrogen bubble chamber. Partial cross sections are determined for all final states resolved by kinematic fitting. In addition, differential cross sections are presented for the two-body final states K o n , Λπ o and Σ +- π -+ along with hyperon polarization angular distributions for Λπ o and Σ + π − .

In order to determine the ηNN coupling constant we have measured the two reactions K − p→ Λη and K − p→ Λπ 0 with a magnetic wire chamber spectrometer which contained a gamma counter for the γγ decays of π 0 and η. The Λ polarization and the differential cross sections are given. The latter have quite different u dependences. Their ratio is interpreted, in terms of a nucleon-Regge exchange model, as the effect of a small ηNN coupling constant for which we obtain G η NN 2 = G π NN 2 · (0.26 ± 0.10) as allowed by SU(3). The large value given by Heisenberg's non-linear field theory, G η NN 2 = G π NN 2 · 0.9, is excluded by this measurement if the characteristic u dependence of the Λπ 0 channel is attributed to N α Regge exchange.

Cross-section values or upper limits are presented for twenty-five two-body hypercharge-exchange reactions in K − p and π + p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The 16 GeV/ c results are compared with some predictions of line-reversal plus exchange-degenerate Regge poles, of SU(3) and of the additive quark model. Agreement is found in all cases.

Lambda production is studied in K − p interactions at 10.1 GeV/ c , where the dominant reaction is K − p → Λ + pions. General characteristics such as the distributions of the double differential cross section in the lab system, of the variable x = p L ∗ p max ∗ , of p ⊥ 2 and of the missing mass to the lambda are presented. Total cross sections for Λ production and for the various channels are given. Differential cross sections d σ d t , d σ d t′ and d σ d u′ are presented. Forward and backward peaks are observed in the d σ d t′ and d σ d u′ distributions, respectively. It is found that the exponential slope of these distributions decreases with increasing missing mass to the lambda and, for d σ d t′ , also for increasing multiplicity in the final state. The polarization of the lambdas is studied as a function of multiplicity, p L ∗ , (Λπ ± ) effective mass, t ′ and u ′. The forward lambdas show

A study has been made of the individual channels that contribute to the reaction K − p → Λ 0 + neutrals in the K − momentum range from 525 to 820 MeV/ c . Total cross sections are presented for the K − p → Λ 0 η 0 , Σ 0 Σ 0 π 0 , Λ 0 π 0 , Σ 0 π 0 and Σ 0 π 0 π 0 channels and differential cross sections for K − p → Λ 0 π 0 . The data were obtained in a heavy liquid bubble chamber experiment with an average gamma detection efficiency of 70%. Only events with all decay gammas detected were used for analysis. This is the first of a series of papers on this subject and presents the experimental technique in detail.

A bubble-chamber study is presented of a 10 events/μb experiment using K − mesons of 4.25 GeV/ c incident momentum. Differential and total cross sections are determined for 7 different reactions: K − p → K 0 n ( la ), → π 0 Λ ( lb ), → ηΛ ( lc ), → η′Λ ( ld ), → π − Σ ( le ), → π + Σ − ( lf ), K + Ξ − ( lg ) . The experimental characteristics in d σ /d t of each reaction are described: (la) shows a levelling off at t = 0 (GeV/ c ) 2 , a break at t = −0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 and no backward events, (lb) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour and a measurable backward component with an indication of a dip at u = −0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (1c) d σ /d t shows a dip in the region between t ≈ −0.2 and −0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (ld) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour; neither this reaction nor the preceding one shows a clear evidence for backward events, (le) d σ /d t has a break at t = −0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 ; there is a significant cross section in the backward region; (lf) and (lg) show mainly backward production. The polarization of the hyperon is measured in the reactions (lb), (lc), (ld) and (le) in the forward production peak. The statistics do not allow the detection of a definite structure in the polarization but the sign and magnitude are determined. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of a dual Regge model, including the effects of absorption as elaborated recently by several authors.

Final states ηΛ and η ′ Λ were studied in K − p interactions at 3.95 GeV c . Cross sections, angular distributions and Λ polarizations are reported. The coupling ration R T = (η 1 K K ∗∗ (1420) (η 8 K K ∗∗ (1420)) M is found to be independent of the momentum transfer. Backward Λη is compared to K − p → Λπ o , π ± p → pπ ± and π − p → nπ o at the same momentum.

We have measured the differential cross sections for the reactions K − p → K 0 n, K − p → Λπ 0 and K − p → Λη , and the Λ polarization distribution for the second reaction, at K − lab momenta of 3.13, 3.30 and 3.59 GeV/ c . The K − p → Λπ 0 polarization is very large: for the combined data in the interval 0.1 < - t < 0.4 GeV 2 , it is 0.98 ± 0.15. The K − p → Λη forward peak is very steep: for the combined data, the slope b in d/d t = a e bt is 16.2 ± 2.3 GeV −2 , whereas it is about 3 GeV −2 for K − p → K 0 n and 5 GeV −2 for K − p → Λπ 0 . There is a dip near t = −0.5 GeV 2 in the K − p → Λη differential cross section , and another near u = −0.3 GeV 2 in the K − p → Λπ 0 differential cross section. The results are compared with predictions of simple models.

Results on the channels K − p → Λ 0 η 0 , Λ 0 π 0 , Σ 0 π 0 , Λ 0 π 0 π 0 and Σ 0 π 0 π 0 are obtained in a K − p formation experiment using 1 million photographs taken in a heavy liquid bubble chamber filled with a CF 3 BrC 3 H 8 mixture. The results are compared with hydrogen bubble chamber (HBC) experiments and with experiments having full or partial gamma-ray detection. Our Λ 0 π 0 and Λ 0 + neutral cross section agree with HBC results. Our Σ 0 π 0 cross section does not exhibit a bump at 1670 MeV as previously seen in HBC experiments. Our Λ 0 π 0 π 0 data are dominated by a Σ (1385) π 0 production. Our Σ 0 π 0 π 0 data is consistent with the presence of some Σ (1405) π 0 production.

In a high statistics CERN 2 m bubble chamber experiment the differential cross sections and polarizations of the Λ for the reactions K − p → Λπ 0 , Λη , Λη ′ at 4.2 GeV/ c have been measured. The reaction K − p → Λη exhibits a pronounced dip around − t ∼0.5 ( GeV / c ) 2 and all three reactions show a significant backward peaking (− u < 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 ). The Λ polarization in the reaction K − p → Λπ 0 is measured to be significantly different from zero throughout most of the available t -range. Forward cross sections enable a determination of R T , the ratio of singlet/octet coupling η 1 KK ∗∗ η 8 KK ∗∗ . Backward cross sections are utilized to estimate the effective η-nucleon coupling constant g η NN 2 over the − u range 0–1.5 ( GeV /c) 2 .
