K − p reactions have been studied at 13 different incident momenta between 1138 and 1434 MeV/ c . This interval corresponds to a mass of the K − p system varying from 1858 to 1993 MeV. About 300 000 photographs were taken in the 81 cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a separated K − beam at the CERN proton-synchrotron. A total of about 44 000 events were analyzed, from which partial and differential cross sections were determined. Polarizations were obtained for the two-body reactions where the decay of the Λ or Σ hyperon allowed their measurement. Data for the two-body channels are presented here as well as for the main quasi-two-body reactions.

We present the results on total channel cross-sections obtained in the Saclay 180 l HBC exposed to a separated K− beam at Nimrod. The cross-sections for each channel are given at 13 incident K− momenta between 1.26 and 1.84 GeV/c.

Differential cross sections and polarizations are presented for the reactions K − p → Λπ 0 , Λη , Λη ′ at 8.25 GeV/ c incident K − momentum. In order to determine the ηNN coupling constant we have measured the two reactions K − p→ Λη and K − p→ Λπ 0 with a magnetic wire chamber spectrometer which contained a gamma counter for the γγ decays of π 0 and η. The Λ polarization and the differential cross sections are given. The latter have quite different u dependences. Their ratio is interpreted, in terms of a nucleon-Regge exchange model, as the effect of a small ηNN coupling constant for which we obtain G η NN 2 = G π NN 2 · (0.26 ± 0.10) as allowed by SU(3). The large value given by Heisenberg's non-linear field theory, G η NN 2 = G π NN 2 · 0.9, is excluded by this measurement if the characteristic u dependence of the Λπ 0 channel is attributed to N α Regge exchange.

A study has been made of the individual channels that contribute to the reaction K − p → Λ 0 + neutrals in the K − momentum range from 525 to 820 MeV/ c . Total cross sections are presented for the K − p → Λ 0 η 0 , Σ 0 Σ 0 π 0 , Λ 0 π 0 , Σ 0 π 0 and Σ 0 π 0 π 0 channels and differential cross sections for K − p → Λ 0 π 0 . The data were obtained in a heavy liquid bubble chamber experiment with an average gamma detection efficiency of 70%. Only events with all decay gammas detected were used for analysis. This is the first of a series of papers on this subject and presents the experimental technique in detail.

Final states π − Σ + , π + Σ − , π o Λ and ηΛ were studied for K − p reactions at 3.95 GeV/ c . Cross sections, angular distributions and polarizations are presented. Data for π − Σ + and π o Λ production are compared to the line-reversed πp reactions at the same beam momentum. Baryon-exchange peaks are presented for the Σ + π − , Σ − π + and Λπ o final states.
