We present new measurements of π0 production at high transverse momenta (pT) for π− and p interactions on Be and Cu targets at 500 GeV/c. The observed dependence of the yields as a function of pT and rapidity (y) is compared with expectations from leading-log QCD over a kinematic range in which the inclusive cross sections fall by more than 4 order of magnitude.

We present results from the initial run of Fermilab experiment E706. The data include incident π− and p beams at 500 GeV/c on Be and Cu targets, and span the kinematic ranges of transverse momentum and rapidity of 3.5≤pT≤10 GeV/c and −0.7≤yc.m.≤0.7, respectively. We have measured cross sections for π0 and direct-photon production, as well as the ηπ0 production ratio. From the data on Be and Cu, we have extracted the nuclear dependence of π0 production, parametrized as Aα. The cross sections are compared with next-to-leading-log QCD predictions for different choices of the QCD momentum scales and several sets of parton distribution functions.

A Search for Direct Photon Production in 200 GeV/c and 300 GeV/c Proton - Beryllium Interactions

A search has been made for direct photon production in pBe interactions at 200 and 300 GeV/ c over the kinematic region 1.5 < P ⊥ < 4.0 GeV/ c and −0.7 < X F < 0 (90° < θ cms < 160°). An excess of single photons above that which is predicted from the measured π 0 and η 0 production is observed. Theratio of γ / π 0 production is calculated assuming that the excess arises from direct photon production. We find that this ratio averages 0.070 ± 0.025 (including systematic errors) in this region of X F and P ⊥ for our 200 and 300 GeV/ c data. We have used our measured value of the η / π 0 ratio of 0.47 ± 0.10 in the determination of the γ / π 0 ratio. The variation of γ / π 0 with X F , P ⊥ , X R and θ cms presented.

We have measured the inclusive cross-section for π0 production at large transverse momentum by 200 GeV/c positive and negative hadron beams on Carbon targets (2.9<PT<6 GeV/c; −0.4<y*<1.2). We used the NA3 spectrometer at the CERNSPS.

Data on the multiplicity and inclusive spectra of γ produced in inelastic pNe20 and pN interactions at 300 GeV are presented. The γ multiplicity for pNe20 interactions is 11.43±0.23, and the ratio of 〈nγ〉 for pNe20 and pN interactions is 1.48±0.05. From an analysis of the effective-mass distributions, 〈nπ0〉=4.91±0.52 and 〈nη0〉=1.47±0.33. In fact, η0 production is much higher in pNe20 interactions [R(η0π0)=0.66±0.12 for np≥21] than in pN interactions [R(η0π0)=0.06±0.04]. No η′(958) signal is seen. Strong correlations between 〈nγ〉 and np, the number of secondary protons, are observed, primarily from the central and target fragmentation regions. Inclusive y* and p⊥ spectra are analyzed and evidence for low-energy cascading and rescattering of fast particles in the projectile fragmentation region is discussed. The data are compared to the predictions of the additive quark model, the Lund model, and the dual parton model.

Nuclear Enhancement of pi0 and eta mesons Produced at Large Transverse Momenta

The authors have measured the large-pT inclusive cross sections for π0 and η production near 90° in the center-of-mass system in 200-GeV/c π+ and proton collisions with beryllium, carbon, and aluminum targets. The cross section for both π0 and η mesons rises with increasing nucleon number (A) of the target nucleus as Aα, with α>1. The ratio of the π0 yield in pA collisions to that in π+A collisions decreases with increasing pT.
