Measurement of the inclusive J/$\psi$ polarization at forward rapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV

We report on the measurement of the inclusive J/$\psi$ polarization parameters in pp collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb$^{-1}$. J/$\psi$ resonances are reconstructed in their di-muon decay channel in the rapidity interval $2.5 < y < 4.0$ and over the transverse-momentum interval $2 < p_{\rm T} < 15$ GeV/$c$. The three polarization parameters ($\lambda_\theta$, $\lambda_\varphi$, $\lambda_{\theta\varphi}$) are measured as a function of $p_{\rm T}$ both in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. The measured J/$\psi$ polarization parameters are found to be compatible with zero within uncertainties, contrary to expectations from all available predictions. The results are compared with the measurement in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV.

Measurement of prompt and nonprompt charmonium suppression in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV

The nuclear modification factors of J/$\psi$ and $\psi$(2S) mesons are measured in PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 TeV. The analysis is based on PbPb and pp data samples collected by CMS at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 464 $\mu$b$^{-1}$ and 28 pb$^{-1}$, respectively. The measurements are performed in the dimuon rapidity range of $|y| <$ 2.4 as a function of centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum (p$_\mathrm{T}$) from p$_\mathrm{T}=$ 3 GeV/$c$ in the most forward region and up to 50 GeV/$c$. Both prompt and nonprompt (coming from b hadron decays) mesons are observed to be increasingly suppressed with centrality, with a magnitude similar to the one observed at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=$ 2.76 TeV for the two J/$\psi$ meson components. No dependence on rapidity is observed for either prompt or nonprompt J/$\psi$ mesons. An indication of a lower prompt J/$\psi$ meson suppression at high p$_\mathrm{T}$ is seen with respect to that observed at intermediate p$_\mathrm{T}$. The prompt $\psi$(2S) meson yield is found to be more suppressed than that of the prompt J/$\psi$ mesons in the entire p$_\mathrm{T}$ range.

Measurements of double-helicity asymmetries in inclusive $J/\psi$ production in longitudinally polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

We report the double-helicity asymmetry, ALLJ/ψ, in inclusive J/ψ production at forward rapidity as a function of transverse momentum pT and rapidity |y|. The data analyzed were taken during s=510  GeV longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in the 2013 run using the PHENIX detector. At this collision energy, J/ψ particles are predominantly produced through gluon-gluon scatterings, thus ALLJ/ψ is sensitive to the gluon polarization inside the proton. We measured ALLJ/ψ by detecting the decay daughter muon pairs μ+μ- within the PHENIX muon spectrometers in the rapidity range 1.2<|y|<2.2. In this kinematic range, we measured the ALLJ/ψ to be 0.012±0.010 (stat) ±0.003 (syst). The ALLJ/ψ can be expressed to be proportional to the product of the gluon polarization distributions at two distinct ranges of Bjorken x: one at moderate range x≈5×10-2 where recent data of jet and π0 double helicity spin asymmetries have shown evidence for significant gluon polarization, and the other one covering the poorly known small-x region x≈2×10-3. Thus our new results could be used to further constrain the gluon polarization for x<5×10-2.

$A_{LL}^{J/\psi}$ as a function of $p_T$ or $|y|$. $N_{J/\psi}^{2\sigma}$ is the $J/\psi$ counting within its $2\sigma$ mass window. The column of Type A systematic uncertainties are a statistically weighted quadratic combination of the background fraction and run grouping uncertainties. $\Delta A_{LL}$ (Rel. Lumi.) is the global systematic uncertainty from relative luminosity measurements. $\Delta A_{LL}$ (Polarization) is the systematic uncertainty from the beam polarization measurement: a zero indicates an uncertainty $< 0.001$.

Measurement of forward $J/\psi$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The production of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. Cross-section measurements are performed as a function of the transverse momentum p$_{T}$ and the rapidity y of the J/ψ meson in the region p$_{T}$ < 14 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5, for both prompt J/ψ mesons and J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays. The production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic coverage are 15.30 ± 0.03 ± 0.86 μb for prompt J/ψ and 2.34 ± 0.01 ± 0.13 μb for J/ψ from b-hadron decays, assuming zero polarization of the J/ψ meson. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The cross-section reported for J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays is used to extrapolate to a total $ b\overline{b} $ cross-section. The ratios of the cross-sections with respect to $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV are also determined.

Energy dependence of forward-rapidity J/$\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ production in pp collisions at the LHC

We present results on transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and rapidity ($y$) differential production cross sections, mean transverse momentum and mean transverse momentum square of inclusive J/$\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ at forward rapidity ($2.5<y<4$) as well as $\psi(2S)$-to-J/$\psi$ cross section ratios. These quantities are measured in pp collisions at center of mass energies $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. Both charmonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, using the muon spectrometer. A comprehensive comparison to inclusive charmonium cross sections measured at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$, 7 and 8 TeV is performed. A comparison to non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics and fixed-order next-to-leading logarithm calculations, which describe prompt and non-prompt charmonium production respectively, is also presented. A good description of the data is obtained over the full $p_{\rm T}$ range, provided that both contributions are summed. In particular, it is found that for $p_{\rm T}>15$ GeV/$c$ the non-prompt contribution reaches up to 50% of the total charmonium yield.

Suppression and azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt $J/\psi$ production in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV

The nuclear modification factor ${R_{\mathrm{AA}}} $ and the azimuthal anisotropy coefficient ${v_{2}} $ of prompt and nonprompt (i.e. those from decays of b hadrons) $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ mesons, measured from PbPb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = $ 2.76 TeV at the LHC, are reported. The results are presented in several event centrality intervals and several kinematic regions, for transverse momenta $p_{\mathrm{T}} > $ 6.5 GeV/$c$ and rapidity $| {y} | < $ 2.4, extending down to $p_{\mathrm{T}}= $ 3 GeV/$c$ in the 1.6 $ < |{y}| < $ 2.4 range. The ${v_{2}} $ of prompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ is found to be nonzero and constant over the full kinematic range studied, while the measured ${v_{2}} $ of nonprompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ is consistent with zero. The ${R_{\mathrm{AA}}} $of prompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ exhibits a suppression that increases with centrality but does not vary as a function of either $y$ or $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ in the fiducial range. The nonprompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi {R_{\mathrm{AA}}} $ shows a suppression which becomes stronger as rapidity or $ p_{\mathrm{T}}$ increase. The ${v_{2}} $ and nuclear suppression of open and hidden charm, and of open charm and beauty, are compared.

The relative modification of the prompt psi(2S) and J/psi yields from pp to PbPb collisions, at the center of mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, is presented. The analysis is based on pp and PbPb data samples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 28.0 inverse picobarns and 464 inverse microbarns, respectively. The double ratio of measured yields of prompt charmonia reconstructed through their decays into muon pairs, (N[psi(2S)]/N[J/psi])[PbPb]/ (N[psi(2S)]/N[J/psi])[pp], is determined as a function of PbPb collision centrality and charmonium transverse momentum pt, in two kinematic intervals: abs(y) < 1.6 covering 6.5 < pt < 30GeV/c and 1.6 < abs(y) < 2.4 covering 3 <pt< 30GeV/c. The centrality-integrated double ratios are 0.36 +/- 0.08 (stat) +/-0.05 (syst) in the first interval and 0.24 +/- 0.22 (stat) +/- 0.09 (syst) in the second. The double ratio is lower than unity in all the measured bins, suggesting that the psi(2S) yield is more suppressed than the J/psi yield in the explored phase space.

Inclusive $J/\psi$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 2.76$ TeV

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5<y<4 and have been obtained by measuring the electron and muon pair decay channels, respectively. The integrated luminosities for the two channels are L^e_int=1.1 nb^-1 and L^mu_int=19.9 nb^-1, and the corresponding signal statistics are N_J/psi^e+e-=59 +/- 14 and N_J/psi^mu+mu-=1364 +/- 53. We present dsigma_J/psi/dy for the two rapidity regions under study and, for the forward-y range, d^2sigma_J/psi/dydp_t in the transverse momentum domain 0<p_t<8 GeV/c. The results are compared with previously published results at sqrt(s)=7 TeV and with theoretical calculations.

Measurement of $J/\psi$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV

The production of J/psi mesons is studied with the LHCb detector using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 71 nb^-1. The differential cross-section for inclusive J/psi production is measured as a function of its transverse momentum pT. The cross-section in the fiducial region 0<pT<12 GeV/c and rapidity 2.0<y<4.5 is measured to be 5.6 +/- 0.1(stat) +/- 0.4 (syst) mub, with the assumption of unpolarised J/psi production. The fraction of J/psi production from b-hadron decays is measured to be (7.1 +/- 0.6 (stat) +/- 0.7 (syst)) %.

Measurement of charm and beauty production at central rapidity versus charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV

Prompt D meson and non-prompt J/ψ yields are studied as a function of the multiplicity of charged particles produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV. The results are reported as a ratio between yields in a given multiplicity interval normalised to the multiplicity-integrated ones (relative yields). They are shown as a function of the multiplicity of charged particles normalised to the average value for inelastic collisions (relative charged-particle multiplicity). D$^{0}$, D$^{+}$ and D$^{*+}$ mesons are measured in five p$_{T}$ intervals from 1 GeV/c to 20 GeV/c and for |y| < 0.5 via their hadronic decays. The D-meson relative yield is found to increase with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. For events with multiplicity six times higher than the average multiplicity of inelastic collisions, a yield enhancement of a factor about 15 relative to the multiplicity-integrated yield in inelastic collisions is observed. The yield enhancement is independent of transverse momentum within the uncertainties of the measurement. The D$^{0}$-meson relative yield is also measured as a function of the relative multiplicity at forward pseudo-rapidity. The non-prompt J/ψ, i.e. the B hadron, contribution to the inclusive J/ψ production is measured in the di-electron decay channel at central rapidity. It is evaluated for p$_{T}$ > 1.3 GeV/c and |y| < 0.9, and extrapolated to p$_{T}$ > 0. The fraction of non-prompt J/ψ in the inclusive J/ψ yields shows no dependence on the charged-particle multiplicity at central rapidity. Charm and beauty hadron relative yields exhibit a similar increase with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. The measurements are compared to PYTHIA 8, EPOS 3 and percolation calculations.

Measurement of J/ψ and ψ(2S) Prompt Double-Differential Cross Sections in pp Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7  TeV

The double-differential cross sections of promptly produced J/psi and psi(2S) mesons are measured in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, as a function of transverse momentum pt and absolute rapidity abs(y). The analysis uses J/psi and psi(2S) dimuon samples collected by CMS, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.55 and 4.90 inverse femtobarns, respectively. The results are based on a two-dimensional analysis of the dimuon invariant mass and decay length, and extend to pt = 120 and 100 GeV for the J/psi and psi(2S), respectively, when integrated over the interval abs(y) < 1.2. The ratio of the psi(2S) to J/psi cross sections is also reported for abs(y) < 1.2, over the range 10 < pt < 100 GeV. These are the highest pt values for which the cross sections and ratio have been measured.

Measurement of the prompt $J/\psi$ and $\psi$(2S) polarizations in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV

The polarizations of prompt J/psi and psi(2S) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using a dimuon data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns. The prompt J/psi and psi(2S) polarization parameters lambda[theta], lambda[phi], and lambda[theta,phi], as well as the frame-invariant quantity lambda(tilde), are measured from the dimuon decay angular distributions in three different polarization frames. The J/psi results are obtained in the transverse momentum range 14 < pt < 70 GeV, in the rapidity intervals abs(y) < 0.6 and 0.6 < abs(y) < 1.2. The corresponding psi(2S) results cover 14 < pt < 50 GeV and include a third rapidity bin, 1.2 < abs(y) < 1.5. No evidence of large transverse or longitudinal polarizations is seen in these kinematic regions, which extend much beyond those previously explored.

The production of J/ψ and mesons in pp collisions at TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The J/ψ and mesons are reconstructed in the μ (+) μ (−) decay mode and the signal yields are determined with a fit to the μ (+) μ (−) invariant mass distributions. The analysis is performed in the rapidity range 2. 0 < y < 4. 5 and transverse momentum range 0 < p ( )T( ) < 14 (15) GeV/c of the J/ψ mesons. The J/ψ and production cross-sections and the fraction of J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays are measured as a function of the meson p (T) and y.

Prompt and non-prompt $J/\psi$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The production of J/psi mesons is studied in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurement is based on a dimuon sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 314 inverse nanobarns. The J/psi differential cross section is determined, as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum, in three rapidity ranges. A fit to the decay length distribution is used to separate the prompt from the non-prompt (b hadron to J/psi) component. Integrated over J/psi transverse momentum from 6.5 to 30 GeV/c and over rapidity in the range |y| < 2.4, the measured cross sections, times the dimuon decay branching fraction, are 70.9 \pm 2.1 (stat.) \pm 3.0 (syst.) \pm 7.8(luminosity) nb for prompt J/psi mesons assuming unpolarized production and 26.0 \pm 1.4 (stat.) \pm 1.6 (syst.) \pm 2.9 (luminosity) nb for J/psi mesons from b-hadron decays.

A measurement of the J/psi and psi(2S) production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 inverse picobarns. Using a fit to the invariant mass and decay length distributions, production cross sections have been measured separately for prompt and non-prompt charmonium states, as a function of the meson transverse momentum in several rapidity ranges. In addition, cross sections restricted to the acceptance of the CMS detector are given, which are not affected by the polarization of the charmonium states. The ratio of the differential production cross sections of the two states, where systematic uncertainties largely cancel, is also determined. The branching fraction of the inclusive B to psi(2S) X decay is extracted from the ratio of the non-prompt cross sections to be: BR(B to psi(2S) X) = (3.08 +/- 0.12(stat.+syst.) +/- 0.13(theor.) +/- 0.42(BR[PDG])) 10^-3

The prompt production of charmonium $\chi_{c}$ and $J/\psi$ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The $\chi_{c}$ and $J/\psi$ mesons are identified through their decays $\chi_{c}\rightarrow J/\psi \gamma$ and $J/\psi\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-$ using 36 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for $\chi_{c}$ and $J/\psi$, $\sigma (\chi_{c}\rightarrow J/\psi \gamma)/ \sigma (J/\psi)$, is determined as a function of the $J/\psi$ transverse momentum in the range $2 &lt; p_{\mathrm T}^{J/\psi} &lt; 15$ GeV/$c$. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low $p_{\mathrm T}^{J/\psi}$ region.
