A precise measurement of p̄p elastic scattering in the Coulomb-strong interaction interference region was performed at the CERN Sp̄pS Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 541 GeV. The ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward elastic scattering amplitude was found to be ρ = 0.135 ± 0.015. The slope of the exponential fall off of the strong interaction part was also measured to be b = 15.5 ± 0.1 GeV −2 .

Antiproton-proton total elastic cross sections at 21 incident momenta in the range 0.69 to 2.43 GeV/ c have been deduced by combining p̄p elastic differential cross sections over a c.m. angular range −0.95 ⩽ cos θ ∗ ⩽ 0.93 with forward elastic cross sections derived from recent real-part measurements and p̄p total cross sections. Two bumps are observed, at M 1 ⋍ 2.155 and M 2 ⋍ 2.345 GeV /c 2 , having widths of Г 1 ∼ 0.135 and Г 2 ∼ 0.135 GeV /c 2 . Corresponding structures in other p̄p reaction channels are discussed.

The p p and p n elastic differential cross sections have been extracted from the reaction p d→ p pn in which the deuteron breaks up. The incident antiproton momenta were 0.480, 0.735 and 0.940 GeV/ c , and the range of the momentum transfers was 0.04 < ∣ t ∣ < 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Both p p and p n differential cross sections are diffraction-like, with structure similar to the higher-momentum data.

Measurements have been made of the differential cross section for p p elastic scattering over a c.m. angular range −0.95 ⩽ cos θ ∗ ⩽ 0.93 at 21 incident antiproton momenta between 0.69 GeV/ c and 2.43 GeV/ c (c.m. energy 1.96–2.58 GeV). About 10 5 events were obtained at each momentum. The results are discussed primarily in terms of the formation of s -channel resonances in the T and U mass regions, and within the context of the optical model of Frahn and Venter.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured at the center-of-mass energy s =546 GeV in the four-momentum transfer range 0.45⩽−⩽1.55GeV 2 . The shape of the t -distribution is quite different from that observed in proton-proton scattering at the ISR. Rather than a dip-bump structure, a kink is present at − ≈0.9GeV 2 followed by a shoulder. The cross section at the second maximum is more than one order of magnitude higher than at the ISR.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering at CM energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t -range 0.04 < − t < 0.45 GeV 2 . The data are well fitted by the form exp ( bt ) with b = 17.1 ± 1.0 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.04 − 0.18 GeV su 2 and b = 13.7 ± 0.2 ± 0.2 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.21−0.45 GeV 2 . An extensive investigation of antiproton-proton interactions at 5.7 GeV/c without strange-particle production was carried out using a hydrogen bubble chamber. Cross-sections for different channels are given and discussed. The reliability of the analysis was checked using artificially generated events. The cross-sections for elastic scattering, for all processes involving annihilation, and for all other inelastic processes are respectively σel=(16.3±0.6)mb,σannlbil=(22.5±2.0)mb, σinel=(24.8±2.0)mb. TheN * 1:38 is present both in the single and multiple pion production channels. For the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f1.jpg a cross-section of (1.05±0.21) mb was obtained. Cross-sections forN * 1238 production in other channels are also given. Some indication of the presence ofI=1/2 isobars was found in the nucleon-pion and the nucleon-two-pion systems. The inelastic nonannihilation reactions were found to be strongly peripheral. The one-pion exchange model including either a form factor or corrections for absorption was applied to the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f2.jpg . Neither version of the model could correctly account for all features of the reaction. The average number of pions in the annihilation was found to be 7.3±0.6. The presence of an asymmetry in the angular distribution of the charged pions was confirmed at this energy; it is due mostly to high-energy pions. The production of ρ and ω mesons was observed in various annihilation channels. Rates of up to 80% for ρ production and up to 15% for ω production were obtained by fitting phase-space and Breit-Wigner curves to the effective-mass distributions of different channels.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of 540 GeV was measured in the four-momentum transfer range 0.05 < − t < s .19 GeV 2 . The t -distribution can be fitted by the exponential exp( b ) with b =17.2±1.0 GeV −2 . This result indicates a rapid decrease of the width of the diffraction peak between ISR and Collider energies.

The inclusive production of neutral strange particles and pions is analysed and compared to results obtained at other energies and in pp interactions. We present differential cross-sections for pp elastic scattering at eight laboratory momenta from 1.50 to 2.06 GeV/c. The data are analysed using an 8-parameter optical modelà la Frahn and Venter. However, the best representation of the differential cross-sections is obtained by combining the glory model with a parametrization of the scattering amplitude in terms of coherent exponentials. Both representations show the dominance of the partial wave with orbital angular momentum equal to four.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured at the centre-of-mass energy s = 630 GeV in the four-momentum transfer range 0.7 ⩽ − t ⩽ 2.2 GeV 2 . The new data confirm our previous results at s = 546 GeV on the presence of a break in the t -distribution at − t ≃ 0.9 GeV 2 which is followed by a shoulder, and extend the momentum transfer range to larger values. The t -dependence of the differential cross section beyond the break is discussed.

Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and asymmetry A on for p p elastic scattering at 15 incident momenta between 497 MeV/ c and 1550 MeV/ c . The angular range where both particles have enough energy to traverse target and setup has been covered. The results are compared with predictions of various N N potential models. None of these models fully explains the present results, although the general trend of the data is predicted correctly.

The proton-antiproton total cross section was measured at the CM energy √s = 546 GeV . The result is σ tot = 61.9± 1.5 mb . The ratio of the elastic to the total cross section is σ e ℓ / σ tot = 0.215±0.005. A comparison to the lower energy data shows that the increase of the total cross section with energy is very close to a log 2 s behaviour.

The presence of a structure in the p̄p total cross section at 1930–1940 MeV, with a narrow width of 9 MeV is confirmed. The interpretation of the effect as a single, non interfering, resonance is made difficult by the comparison of the elastic scattering with the charge exchange cross sections.
