We present a measurement of the electron charge asymmetry in $p\bar{p}\rightarrow W+X \rightarrow e\nu +X$ events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to 9.7~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The asymmetry is measured as a function of the electron pseudorapidity and is presented in five kinematic bins based on the electron transverse energy and the missing transverse energy in the event. The measured asymmetry is compared with next-to-leading-order predictions in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and provides accurate information for the determination of parton distribution functions of the proton. This is the most precise lepton charge asymmetry measurement to date.

We present the first measurement of the electron angular distribution parameter alpha_2 in W to e nu events produced in proton-antiproton collisions as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. Our analysis is based on data collected using the D0 detector during the 1994--1995 Fermilab Tevatron run. We compare our results with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, which predicts an angular distribution of (1 +/- alpha_1 cos theta* + alpha_2 cos^2 theta*), where theta* is the polar angle of the electron in the Collins-Soper frame. In the presence of QCD corrections, the parameters alpha_1 and alpha_2 become functions of p_T^W, the W boson transverse momentum. This measurement provides a test of next-to-leading order QCD corrections which are a non-negligible contribution to the W boson mass measurement.
Angular distributions of the emitted charged lepton is fitted to the formula d(sig)/d(pt**2)/dy/d(cos(theta*)) = const*(1 +- alpha_1*cos(theta*) + alpha_2*(cos(theta*))**2). The angle theta* is measured in the Collins-Soper frame. alpha_1 velues are calculated based on the measured PT(W) of each event. Possible variations of alpha_1 are treated as a source of systematic uncertainty.
We report on measurements of inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in ppbar collisions at sqrts=1.8 TeV.From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 inverse pb recorded in 1994--1995 using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we determine sigma(ppbar->W+X)B(W->e nu) = 2310 +- 10(stat) +- 50(syst) +- 100(lum) pb and sigma(ppbar->Z+X)B(Z->e e) = 221 +- 3(stat) +- 4(syst) +- 10(lum) pb. From these, we derive their Ratio R = 10.43 +- 0.15(stat) +- 0.20(syst) +- 0.10(NLO), B(W->e nu) = 0.1066 +- 0.0015(stat) +- 0.0021(syst) +- 0.0011(theory)+- 0.0011(NLO), and Gamma_W = 2.130 +- 0.030(stat) +- 0.041(syst) +- 0.022(theory) +- 0.021(NLO) GeV. We use the latter to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into non-standard model final states, Gamma_W^{inv}, of 0.168 GeV. Combining these results with those from the 1992--1993 data gives R = 10.54 +- 0.24, Gamma_W = 2.107 +- 0.054 GeV, and a 95% C.L. upper limit on Gamma_W^{inv} of 0.132 GeV. Using a sample with a luminosity of 505 inverse nb taken at sqrts=630 GeV, we measure sigma(ppbar->W+X)B(W->e nu) = 658 +- 67 pb.
Cross sections times branching ratios for W+- and Z0 production. The second DSYS error is due to the uncertainty in the luminosity.
Ratio of W to Z0 cross sections. The second systematic error is due to the uncertainty in the NLO electroweak radiative corrections.
DO has measured the inclusive production cross section of W and Z bosons in a sample of 13 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the Fermilab Tevatron. The cross sections, multiplied by their leptonic branching fractions, for production in pbar-p collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV are sigma_W*B(W->e nu) = 2.36+-0.02+-0.08+-0.13 nb, sigma_W*B(W->mu nu) = 2.09+-0.06+-0.22+-0.11 nb, sigma_Z*B(Z->e+ e-) = 0.218+-0.008+-0.008+-0.012 nb, and sigma_Z*B(Z->mu+ mu-) = 0.178+-0.022+-0.021+-0.009 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic; the third reflects the uncertainty in the integrated luminosity. For the combined electron and muon analyses, we find sigma_W*B(W->l mu)/sigma_Z*B(Z->l+ l-) = 10.90+-0.52. Assuming standard model couplings, we use this result to determine the width of the W boson, and obtain Gamma(W) = 2.044+-0.097 GeV.

The ratio of the W+≥1 jet cross section to the inclusive W cross section is measured using W±→e±ν events from p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV. The data are from 108pb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Measurements of the cross section ratio for jet transverse energy thresholds (ETmin) ranging from 15 to 95 GeV are compared to theoretical predictions using next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. Data and theory agree well for ETmin>25GeV, where the predictions lie within 1 standard deviation of the measured values.

We have searched for the rare decay W±→π±+γ in 83 pb−1 of data taken in proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.8 TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find three events in the signal region and estimate the background to be 5.2±1.5 events. We set a 95% confidence level upper limit of 7×10−4 on the ratio of partial widths, Γ(W±→π±+γ)/Γ(W±→e±+ν).

The shape of the transverse momentum distribution of W bosons (p_T(W)) produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.8 TeV is measured with the DO detector at Fermilab. The result is compared to QCD perturbative and resummation calculations over the p_T(W) range from 0-200 GeV/c. The shape of the distribution is consistent with the theoretical prediction.
The first error is statistical, the first systematic (DSYS) error is the uncertainty in the background and efficiencies, the second is the systematic errorin the detector modelling.
We report the first observation of diffractively produced W bosons. In a sample of W -> e nu events produced in p-barp collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, we find an excess of events with a forward rapidity gap, which is attributed to diffraction. The probability that this excess is consistent with non-diffractive production is 1.1 10^{-4} (3.8 sigma). The relatively low fraction of W+Jet events observed within this excess implies that mainly quarks from the pomeron, which mediates diffraction, participate in W production. The diffractive to non-diffractive W production ratio is found to be R_W=(1.15 +/- 0.55)%.

We present a measurement of the ratio σB(W→eν)σB(Z0→e+e−) in p¯p collisions at s=1.8 TeV The data represent an integrated luminosity of 21.7 pb−1 from the 1992-1993 run of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find σB(W→eν)σB(Z0→e+e−)=10.90±0.32(stat)±0.29(syst). From this value, we extract a value for the W width, Γ(W)=2.064±0.061(stat)±0.059(syst) GeV, and the branching ratio, Γ(W→eν)Γ(W)=0.1094±0.0033(stat)±0.0031(syst), and we set a decay-mode-independent limit on the top quark mass mtop>62 GeV/c2 at the 95% C.L.

We present a measurement of $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu)$ and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-)$ in proton - antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =1.8$ TeV using a significantly improved understanding of the integrated luminosity. The data represent an integrated luminosity of 19.7 pb$~{-1}$ from the 1992-1993 run with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We find $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu) = 2.49 \pm 0.12$nb and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-) = 0.231 \pm 0.012$nb.
First systematic error is due to detector effects, the second is due to uncertainty in the luminosity.
A search for a heavy charged gauge boson, W ′, using the decay channels W ′ → eν and W′ → τν → eνν ν is reported. The data used in the analysis were collected by the DØ experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992-93 p p collider run from an integrated luminosity of 13.9 ± 0.8 pb −1 at s =1.8 TeV . Assuming that the neutrino from W ′ decay is stable and has a mass significantly less than m W ′ , an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the cross section times branching ratio for p p → W′ → eν . A W ′ with the same couplings to quarks and leptons as the standard model W boson is excluded for m W ′ < 610 GeV/c 2 .

The W'+- is assumed has the couplings to quarks and leptons as the standard model W and neutrinos produced in WPRIME decay are stable and have a mass significantly less then M(W').
The inclusive cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for W and Z boson production in PbarP collisions at Sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV were measured using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider: Sigma_W*B(W->e, nu) = 2.36 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.13 nb, Sigma_W*B(W->mu,nu) = 2.09 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.11 nb, Sigma_Z*B(Z-> e, e) = 0.218 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.012 nb, Sigma_Z*B(Z->mu,mu) = 0.178 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.009 nb. The first error is the combined statistical and systematic uncertainty, and the second reflects the uncertainty in the luminosity. For the combined electron and muon analyses we find: [Sigma_W*B(W->l,nu)]/[Sigma_Z*B(Z->l,l)] = 10.90 +/- 0.49. Assuming Standard Model couplings, this result is used to determine the width of the W boson: Gamma(W) = 2.044 +/- 0.093 GeV.
The second DSYS error is due to luminosity.
The charge asymmetry has been measured using $19,039W$ decays recorded by the CDF detector during the 1992-93 run of the Tevatron Collider. The asymmetry is sensitive to the ratio of $d$ and $u$ quark distributions to $x<0.01$ at $Q~2 \approx M_W~2$, where nonperturbative effects are minimal. It is found that of the two current sets of parton distributions, those of Martin, Roberts and Stirling (MRS) are favored over the sets most recently produced by the CTEQ collaboration. The $W$ asymmetry data provide a stronger constraints on $d/u$ ratio than the recent measurements of $F_2~{\mu n}/F_2~{\mu p}$ which are limited by uncertainties originating from deutron corrections.

An analysis of proton-antiproton collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) yields σ(pp¯→WX)B(W→μν)=2.21±0.22 nb and σ(pp¯→ZX)B(Z →μ+μ−)=0.226±0.032 nb. The ratio is Rμ=σWB(W→μν)/σZB(Z→μ+μ−)=9.8±1.2. Combining with previous CDF electron results gives σWB(W→lν)=2.20±0.20 nb, σZB(Z→l+l−)=0.214±0.023 nb, and Rl=10.0±0.8. We extract the ratios of the coupling constants gμ/ge and gτ/gμ. Using standard model assumptions we deduce the inverse branching ratio B−1(W→lν), the width Γ(W), and a decay-mode-independent lower bound on the top quark mass of 45 GeV/c2 (95% C.L.).

We have observed over 102 events of the type W→τν followed by τ→ hadrons, where the taus are identified by their decay into one or three charged particles. We measure the cross section times branching ratio for pp¯→W→τν and compare it to the value for W→eν to directly measure the ratio of weak coupling constants gτ/ge. We find gτ/ge=0.97±0.07, consistent with lepton universality.

The decays W → ev and Z → e + e − are studied in [ovbar|p]p collisions at √ s =630 GeV . The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as σ e w =682±12±40 pb and σ e w =65.6±4.0±3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O(α 2 s ) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R =10.4± 0.7 0.6 ±0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: Γ w =2.10±0.13±0.09 GeV . The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m top >53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb −1 of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN p p Collider runs at s =0.63 TeV , yields R ≡ σ W Br(W→ μ v)/ σ z Br( Z → μμ )=10.4 −1.5 +1.8 stat.±0.8(syst.) An analysis of high-transverse-momentum electrons using data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) of p¯p collisions at s=1800 GeV yields values of the production cross section times branching ratio for W and Z0 bosons of σ(p¯p→WX→eνX)=2.19±0.04(stat)±0.21(syst) nb and σ(p¯p→Z0X→e+e−X)=0.209±0.013(stat)±0.017(syst) nb. We have measured the W transverse momentum distribution ( p T W ) using a sample of 323 W → eν and W → μν events produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN collider. In the present letter we extend the study of the distribution up to p T W ∼- m W and compare to leading and higher order QCD. This comparison is a precise test of QCD with hadron colliders and the inclusive spectrum gives good agreement over a large range of p T W . However we observed two events at very large p T W (∼- 100 GeV/ c ) in which the W candidate recoils against an energetic di-jet system. Both events have a very large missing transverse energy and a jet-jet mass compatible with the W mass. In a separate analysis, a topologically similar event has been observed in which a high-mass di-jet system is balanced by a large missing transverse energy which could be interpreted as Z 0 → ν ν decay. We cannot easily explain these three events in terms of explicit second-order QCD calculations. However we cannot exclude at this stage the possibility that they are the result of non-gaussian fluctuations in the response of UA1 calorimetry or a statistical fluctuation in the data.
