We report the results of the investigation of 18 500 frames of π+p interactions in the Brookhaven 20-in. bubble chamber at an incident energy of 900 MeV. It is found that single-pion production proceeds almost entirely through formation of the N33* isobar. The production mechanism of the N33* is analyzed in terms of its spin density matrix. Comparison is made with Stodolsky and Sakurai's ρ-exchange model and with the absorptive peripheral model.

The π + p cross section for elastic scattering from hydrogen was measured at seven incident energies ranging from 20.8 to 95.9 MeV for an angular range from 60° to 145°. The experimental set-up is discussed in detail as well as the method used for data analysis. A table of results and a set of phase shifts are provided.

Elastic cross-section measurements are presented for π ± −p at 20 GeV/ c and π − −p at 30 GeV/ c incident momenta in the large angle region (50° to 90° in the c.m. system). The data are compared with published lower energy elastic cross sections. A test is made of the dimensional counting rules for π ± −p elastic scattering and some indication of a deviation from this rule is observed in the π − −p case. A comparison is also made with the predictions of the constituent interchange model. Although the broad features of the predictions are confirmed, there are some important discrepancies. Finally, the predictions of the model due to Preparata and Soffer are also compared with the new data.

We report measurements of the polarization parameters in π+p and π−p elastic scattering at an incident momentum of 100 GeV/c. The results cover the range 0.18<~−t<~1.4 GeV2 and are in agreement with current Regge-model predictions.

Measurements of polarization in π+p elastic scattering have been made at 1.60, 1.80, 2.11, and 2.31 GeVc. The data cover the entire angular range, with emphasis on the backward region. Comparisons have been made with both u-channel and t-channel models, as well as with predictions of phase-shift analyses. While the agreement is generally poor in all cases, the best agreement is with some t-channel predictions.

We have made measurements of polarization in π−p elastic scattering, with emphasis over the backward region, at 1.60 to 2.28 GeVc. The results indicate the absence of u-channel dominance in the backward region, as was observed in the case of π+p scattering.
