We report on double-differential inclusive cross-sections of the production of secondary protons, deuterons, and charged pions and kaons, in the interactions with a 5% nuclear interaction length thick stationary beryllium target, of a +8.9 GeV/c proton and pion beam, and a -8.0 GeV/c pion beam. Results are given for secondary particles with production angles between 20 and 125 degrees.
Double differential inclusive cross section for the reaction P BE --> P X with an 8.9 GeV beam and production angle 20 to 30 degrees.
Double differential inclusive cross section for the reaction P BE --> P X with an 8.9 GeV beam and production angle 30 to 40 degrees.
Double differential inclusive cross section for the reaction P BE --> P X with an 8.9 GeV beam and production angle 40 to 50 degrees.
The angular distributions of secondary pions, protons, and deuterons originating from π−Pb interactions at an incident-pion momentum of 5 GeV/c was determined in a new run of measurements relying on track reconstruction. While showing a decrease over a large angular interval with increasing emission angle, the yield of cumulative particles of each species was found to be anomalously large near the backward direction.

The inclusive cross sections of backward proton production in π − ( K − , p ) -Be, Al, Cu, Pb interactions at 40 GeV/ c are presented. Protons have been detected in the angular range 150°–165° and kinetic energy region 0.1–0.3 GeV. The invariant cross-section ratios for various beam particles are independent of the values of kinetic energy and of the nuclear target type: 〈ƒ K − /ƒ π − 〉= 0.87 ± 0.03 stat ± 0.03 syst , 〈ƒ p /ƒ π − 〉 = 1.82 ± 0.10 stat ± 0.05 syst . The A -dependence of the cross-section slope parameter for A ⩾27 is less than ∼2%.
