We have measured the multiplicities of particles emitted in collisions between π's and p's of 1.5 to 2.5 GeV/c momentum with He and Ne nuclei in a streamer chamber. The chamber gas served as the target as well as the detecting medium. Because of the low density and 4π solid angle of the detector, it was possible to detect nuclear fragments with energies less than 5 MeV, and to essentially count all the particles emitted in a collision. Event distributions as a function of track multiplicity were obtained as well as correlated event distributions. NUCLEAR REACTIONS He (proton or pion, fragments and pions), Ne (proton or pion, fragments and pions), E=1.5, 2.0, 2.5 BeV/c; streamer chamber gas used as target with fragment energies as low as 5 MeV. Measured multiplicities and correlations of produced particle types.

Inclusive charged pion production in hadron nucleus interactions at 100-GeV/c and 320-GeV/c

An experiment has been performed with the Fermilab 30-inch bubble chamber and Downstream Particle Identifier to study inclusive charged pion production in the high energy interactions of π±,K+,p and\(\bar p\) with thin foils of magnesium, silver and gold. The laboratory rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are presented separately for π+ and π− production. Comparisons are made with data from hadron-proton interactions and theA dependence of the cross sections in the different kinematic regions is discussed. We investigate the dependence of the cross sections on the number of observed protons ejected from the nucleus. By using our π−A data from two different beam energies, we study the energy dependence of these spectra. Comparisons are made with the VENUS string model Monte Carlo.

NUCLEAR INTERACTIONS OF 21-GEV/C PROTONS AND 50-GEV/C NEGATIVE PIONS IN EMULSIONS EXPOSED IN A STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD

Incoherent nuclear interactions of 21 GeV/c protons and 50 GeV/cπ−-mesons in emulsions exposed in a strong (180 kG) magnetic field have been investigated. The following topics are covered: the multiplicity of various types of charges secondaries, general features of one-particle rapidity and transverse momentum distributions, energy partitions among secondaries, characteristics of the leading particles and relativistic recoil protons, correlation relations. The experimental data are compared with predictions of current models of nuclear production.
